For Luan, growing up as an Asian American wasn't easy. Luan was born and raised in America as an American citizen, but his parents are Vietnamese immigrants who escaped their country after the Vietnam War. Even though Luan was born an American citizen, all people seem to see was his Asian heritage.
When Luan was in elementary school, kids would make fun of his features - his small eyes and flat face - and they would say incredibly hurtful things. When he would pull out his lunch in the cafeteria, kids around him would say mean things like, "EW, is that dog?" Luan hated the way people made him feel.
As Luan got older, things seemed to get worse. He'd go to school every day and kids would say the same hurtful things. They would scream, "Hey ling ling" or "ching chong." They would call him terrible names and belittle him. After a while, Luan got so used to the way he was treated that he even made racist jokes about himself. He began to hate who he was and feel ashamed of his culture.
When the COVID pandemic hit, things got even worse for Luan. People would ask him, "How did the bat taste?" When he would walk down the street, people would say, "Ew, stay away from me, you have COVID!" Luan was made fun of even more, since everyone believed that the virus came from China.
When Luan found out about the shooting in Georgia that targeted Asian-owned salons, he was really scared. His parents owned a salon, and he couldn't imagine what he would do if the same thing happened to his family. Every day, as Luan scrolled through Instagram and Twitter, he would see videos of Asian Americans being attacked for no reason. Everything seemed to get worse for Asian Americans during the pandemic, and Luan thought to himself, "Don't blame me for COVID-19."
Recently, though, Luan has learned to love his culture. He realized that his special features, the food he eats and his family's heritage are what make him special and unique. He has learned to love himself and his heritage. He wants to end racist attacks against Asians and spread the STOP ASIAN HATE message. From now on, he will always remember to be proud of where he came from.

I’m a Chinese-American adoptee, and used to get asked “why don’t you have small eyes” or “why is your nose flat” or more recently (in high school, no less) someone came up behind me and loudly said, “ni hao”. I don’t understand what people think they’re gaining by being rude.

I’m a European (3/4greek 1/4 Russian) and as a child I would constantly get bullied and many children or other people would make remarks like “oh you’re Russian you must drink a lot of vodka” and crap like that- it really sucked. But as I aged some people began to understand and I’m so grateful

I meannn, the world is still kinda fucked up. I wouldn't say that if we didn't have parasitic animals that lay their eggs inside of other animals so their hatchlings can eat their way out and mate with their siblings to repeat the process.
Or if roaches didn't exist. I mean I'm not really sure why anyone would create such an efficient being when it comes to survival yet make it disgusting looking and spread diseases. That's also fucked up.
But on the bright side, as humans we're constantly trying to change for the better. I mean that for the species as a whole. We've changed laws and social structures and even our treatment towards other animals just so we would do less harm. And I appreciate that. But yeah I do agree that we're still kinda messed up because of our other flaws that we still gotta correct. I think what I'm tryina say is that everything's fucked up in some way, but on the bright side, we're urging one another to improve.

I used to have a boyfriend from Indonesia. I would cry and get scared that he would get hurt because he was also Chinese. He knew I was scared and comforted me. He said that he knew how to protect himself from any danger and he wanted to protect me. But our relationship didn't last long because of long distance. Every night I pray for his safety. Because I still love him even though we're not together anymore.
We need to protect the people in North America that have been belittled or treated as inferior. For all asian, black, lgbtqia2s+, aboriginal, muslim, jewish, etc we have to treat as normal and protect them. They are a part of our society too ❤️

I am black-Asian and I know how it feels to be mistreated or bullied. I was told to leave because I was too Asian in a American school, and In a Japanese school, I was told that I was too dark skinned to fit in.
But I learned to ignore it, and now I have wonderful friends that support me in my Japanese and love me for who I am.

As an Asian American, I was lucky to grow up in a diverse area where I wasn’t made fun of very much. But when the pandemic happened my family got dirty looks whenever we went out because of the stereotypes that asians have Covid
The stereotype doesn’t even make sense. Many people of other races have it too. Do these people even use their brains? I’m sad to see that a previously kind community fell for this idiocy.

This breaks my heart, I'm from Australia but I have a lot of asian friends around me who have gone through similar. No one should be judged or killed for their race, everybody is special in their own ways and nobody, any race or religion should be treated like the SAME person; yeah, some people around in asia have done bad things but everyone needs to remember we have people who do bad things as well and just because some people do things doesn't mean everyone does. Hearing this story and looking around me and seeing this disgusting reality is making me believe we are loosing our society. If you are going through racism or any kind of hate or bullying remember that you are not alone and there are so many people by your side.
What we have to understand is this has been going on since forever and that the bad people who judge others because of their skin color, they're miserable themselves and try to take their insecurities on the good people. It's not our fault, just love yourself and keep being yourself and ignore the haters. I wish everyone the absolute best and God bless you all.

I once went to the amusement park in California with my family, and while I stood on line for a roller coaster these teenage guys were frowning at us. I asked my mom why they were staring, and she answered me with a hurt expression. We're not Chinese, but Chinese people don't deserve this either.
We moved to Hawaii and most are Japanese, so they are very welcoming.

Finally someone's talking about this! It upset me when Covid started and immediately people made racist jokes against Asians on Tik Tok and no one called anyone out for it.
What upset me even more was when more Asians were being murdered and beat up frequently this year and just after one to three months, people stopped talking about it as much. There was no protest about how their lives mattered. I felt like they just forgot or something.

I remembered one time where I sat with an Asian girl at lunch back in 7th grade. After lunch, a random boy came up to me and jokingly said “you have COVID for sitting next to that girl!” Now I know he was joking, but him jokingly saying that I have COVID all because I sat with a girl who was asian was absolutely was SO unnecessary and completely rude. Personally, I view everyone equally except for those who have racist or homophobic remarks. Always treat everyone on how you want to be treated, no matter if they are Asian, black, Hispanic, Or any other race out there.
I still remember how almost everyone in my class assumed I was Chinese when I was Filipino because to them, Asia=China and there wasn’t anything else.

As a British-Chinese person, I do somewhat relate to this story. Though I would say there isn't much violence here, as I don't recall seeing much Asian people getting beaten up in the UK. People made racist comments on my appearance, called me horrible nicknames and assumed that I ate cats or dogs. Of course, it got worse when the Covid 19 pandemic came out. It really hurted me, sometimes I would pretend to be poorly to avoid going to school to hear racist comments. It really hurted me to hear that they don't see me as part of their group, as I viewed myself as more British than Chinese.
For all of the Asians reading this, I hope you all will stay strong and love yourself for your culture. It may be tough, but I know we can all get through this. Thank you all for reading (◍•ᴗ•◍)♡

I was in the 5th grade in Europe and at that time covid just started.
I had a cough during covid, but I wasn’t sick. But I needed a mask anyways. It was so embarrassing to show up to school with mask, it hurt me cause people thought I had covid. They keep asking me about the mask! Even my friends ran away from me, and to make it worse. I’m Asian myself and people add that up to me having covid… till one of my classes one person ask about the mask, I had enough! I took it off. And broke down in tears.. I don’t have covid. I’m just Asian. I just have cough. Was it wrong of what I was doing? Wearing mask.. even people outside of school thought I had covid. It hurts.
I'm sorry to hear that. Don't listen to brainless uneducated dead weights that believe such shallow bullshit like "all asians have covid". You are loved. Your friends aren't real friends. You take your own path, and your success will be the ultimate revenge on those who have wronged you.

I had a similar experience as a Vietnamese British. I was in a tutoring centre for children in it. One girl, who seemed younger than me, walked up to me after my tutor sessions and said “are you Chinese?” I corrected them that I am Vietnamese but they kept calling me Chinese and said I have covid and shouldn’t be here. It bugged me a lot and people also commented about my “slim eyes” at primary school and I hear an offensive gesture in front of me a lot.
I hope that we get the justice we need and bought attention to it + equality too. Racism needs to be stopped.

I love how storybooth allows people to share their stories. It can make them feel better by venting it to someone, and others can relate to it, be more aware of what is going on around them, and also learn something from it. Unlike some other channels which make sht like, *'My bf cheated on me with a monkey and the monkey threatened to start war with humanity so I tried to hunt monkeys only to realise my parents were monkeys too and now I'm being held hostage by monkeys'*

A lot of my friends and sadly my family members have said these hurtful things. Not to a person’s face but between family conversations. I always felt bad and tried to intervene but it’s not always easy. I want to thank this person for stepping up and sending this message so more people can be aware of it.
It would’ve been nice to see how he came to appreciate his culture again. Because it’s shown in like just in an instant he’s automatically liking himself again. There must’ve been something to love his culture again.

I have an aunt I have really strong bond with. I almost had an obsession with her, and she also gave me time. I used to share all my stuff with her. I felt happy. But now, she's really busy. For that, she isn't spending a lot of time with me. I mean when I write about it, it's pretty funny and not serious. But tbh, being with someone 24/7 and not seeing them like, at all is a pretty drastic change. And it's causing me emotional pain. I mean the truth is, she is REALLY caring for me and my siblings as well and we all really love her. That's why I'm really, maybe too attached to her. But my brother on the other hand, is pretty de-attached to her. For that reason, my aunt becomes sad and and even cries sometimes. It's all because I had a strong attachment to her, she has an expectation that the rest of my siblings will have the attachment to her too. And because my brother hasn't that much bond with her, it's making her sad. And if I didn't have a bond with her in the first place, maybe she wouldn't have any expectations, may be she wouldn't be sad because my brother doesn't have a strong bond with her, maybe I could control my emotions easier. It's all because of me 😭😭😭
