  • Fengliu Qiangu was filmed in Suzhou in 1980 with the movie being released the following year in 1981.
The film's director cast local practitioners of traditional martial arts for this scene. Of particular note is the performance of Yue Jia Shou "Yue Family Hands", from Hangzhou's Lianshi Boat Boxing system, by Zhang Zhiping (dressed in dark blue clothing).
Zhang Zhiping began his martial studies under famous Suzhou master Zhang Ziyuan. Zhang was known for his folk "Shaolin" boxing and particularly for his skills with the Guandao.
Near the end of the cultural revolution Zhang Zhiping met a young man named Xiao Shen from Hangzhou. They would meet in the park and Zhang and Xiao traded skills with Zhang Zhiping learning Hangzhou Boat Boxing's Yue Jia Shou form in exchange for teaching Xiao some of Zhang Ziyuan's folk "Shaolin" boxing.
Later Zhang Zhiping went on to study with other local teachers as well as teachers of Chen Taiji Quan. Today Zhang Zhiping still teaches Boat Boxing and other arts in Suzhou.
This scene was filmed in the Gaoyi Yuan inside of Suzhou famous Tianping Shanzhuang.
This is one of Suzhou's many famous ancient building complexes dating to the late Ming dynasty.

Hello @Tea Serpent, I am going to visit Yunshuiyao Old Town in Nanjing County, Zhangzhou soon. I was wondering - what are some of the local styles/lineages/branches unique to this area of Zhangzhou (e.g. Taizu lineages, branches of Luohan, another "hall" of martial arts which Zhangzhou is famous for having, etc.), and if you have any videos of them?

I honestly have no idea, I tried searching around but I couldn't find anything regarding martial arts from Shuyang township.
In general though there is a lot of Taizu in Nanjing, I know there is some Xiyi Tang stuff and I think at least one of the other major Taizu hall lines had schools there. Are you going to have time to visit other parts of Nanjing county? 南靖县靖城镇径里村 is supposed to have an old village Taizu line with their martial hall in a wing of the Lin family ancestral hall. There is also 南靖县靖城镇径里村 that had a family line of Taizu passed down from a villager who passed the provincial martial exams. I don't know if there is much left or if they show it publicly.
But they also have an active branch of Xiyi Tang Taizu there which has been in the village for about a century.
Anyway I'd be interested to hear whether you find anything around Yunshuiyao, or anywhere else you go.

@@TeaSerpent Do you have any video links for the various lines of Taizu you mentioned above? I am there because of a visit to see the tulou establishments, and I just wanted to know what were some of the local lineages of Taizu. Thanks for responding so quickly, by the way.

@@jadenng7569 Sorry I can't seem to find any. You should be able to find plenty of videos of 习艺堂 Taizu from other parts of Zhangzhou outside of Nanjing. But given the differences in evolution I can't say how close it would be to what is practiced there.

@@jadenng7569 I also just realized I just copied and pasted the same village name on both of those. I'll have to find the first village again so I can give you it's actual name and location.

@@jadenng7569 I guess there is also an old deaf mute guy in Jingli village named 林十元 who teaches an old local Meihua Quan system.
