Minor editing error at around the 7 minute mark where my phone goes off - I cut the video and repeat myself! Right now I'm still in the processing of moving house and so my time has been massively limited, but I will be getting back into normal recording hopefully at the very start of December! Hope you all are enjoying the Cosmoteer content whilst I'm so addicted to It too!!
It’s all good lath, take however much time you need to move before going back to normal recording, so happy your enjoying Cosmoteer it’s such a great game
"I'm not very creative" My brother in christ, 90% of playthroughs of this game are comprised of ships in the shape of squares and occasionally triangles like I've been teleported to flatlandia. Your ships look absolutely awesome, and the fact that you decorate and plan them for aesthetic on the fly while just playing makes them even more impressive.
Creative people don't know what... less... creative people consider "creative". For instance, I play Interstellar Rift, which includes a shipbuilding part of the game. My interiors are often very pretty and spacious, but the exteriors look like giant flying bricks with endless thrusters attached to them (plus some cargopods). I cannot escape the brick ship because it's the most optimal shape for interiors. I imagine most ship designers can't escape triangles because it's just a brick with strategically-placed armor.
[Nusketir captain log 34]: alright it’s recording, so that madman added mandibles to his ship, we had some ships and defense platforms report that they have been grabbed by it and just dragged around… do they do it for fun? Are they that mad? Who the hell is that insane! The damn monolith cooperative have been having problems with that maniac- wait, what is that, no that can’t be him… my god it is.. everyone to their stations! Hostile inbound! FIRE THE RAILGUN DAMNIT WERE BEING CARVED OUT!-….. [log cut]
Just a small tip for when painting your ships: You can use the gradiant black painting to fake shadows, an give the impression of elevation. It's really nice to make your ship fell 3D. It also would be really nice if you lowered all your crew priorities by 1 am made fueling the hyperdrive a 10. That way, if your ship is in a lot o trouble, or if you just sniped a station, you can order your ship to jump way, and it will do so very quickly.
So basically Lathrix has recreated the Orca or Rorqual from Eve Online with his factory ship design. As someone who flies an Orca, I approve! . . . And its gone.
A small tip since I know you love the deck cannons. The deck cannons and heavy laser blasters can be set to fire one barrel at a time instead of both at once. Simply select the gun and there will be a button in the bottom left to change the fire mode.
hey lath if you want to make bigger ships this game has steam workshop support and theres a mod that allows for 1000x1000 ship sizes (no way you need that but its better than how small vanilla is)
I think this is your strangest yet adorable intro so far. I've never been called an alphabet, let alone a back handed compliment sided with a couple of letters missing.. Thanks? I think?
While that building box is the limit for the building, in the "mods" part at the bottom left of the main menu, you get "huge ships" mod preinstalled! Might be worth looking into other mods as well, but the bigger building area just has to be switched on, its already installed.
the storage vessel you made looks just like mine at least the first one. i named it the "evergreen". it is an upside down A shaped ship with a bunch of crew quarters in the center bar. i was going for a covenent dropship style cargo ship, it has plenty of space and i plan on making a much larger version of it, it already pretty big but i like making massive ships
Hay Lathrix, you probably know this already but sulfur is safer and denser to store, so using sulfur and ammunition factories on large combat ships lets you store way more ammo, even if it takes a second to process it.
Lathrix, for your main ship I would suggest adding some heavy lasers, or if you have the ammo capacity, flak cannons, either way it would add a more consistent source of secondary damage for when ammunition runs dry or to cover the reload weakness of the deck guns, I use heavy lasers and there’s a mod on the workshop called auto cannons which have guns that can be surrounded by armor and have a work like point defense, just much more punchy
i built my "fighter" using mining lasers and it's actually really really good if you have few disruptors to take down shields. Because while mining lasers just anihilate any blocks - they do near to no damage against shields. They are pretty good at damage control AND after the fight is over you can use them to quickly disassemble the enemy.
hey lath, awesome series! i can't help but mention it, you should really put ammo factories on your combat ship next to the guns, fed by sulfur containers. you'd be able to go so much longer before refuelling, 1 sulfur makes 20 ammo, an entire pile! anyway, i love what you've done with the Malal's Wrath, the wings make it looks so cool. Thank you
Just two suggestions for the Wrath: 1. have onboard ammo factories and stockpiles of sulfur, it takes a bit more crew but is a lot more space efficient in how much ammo you get out of your available storage space. 2. even a small bit of point defense can help a lot. You have a good bit of space in the side wings.
Loving this series so far! As missiles become more common having point defense will be really important, whether you use the small automated variant or the larger ammo consuming flak keeping missiles and especially nukes at bay will save you more times than you’ll think. Also for your forge ship perhaps you should install mining lasers? More utility means more productivity!
Pssssssst- just a suggestion for a ship- but I recommend building a Sun-Diver. There's LOTS of goodies hidden away in the no-go zone, big U, C, Tr, and other rare resource asteroids. Shields can block the Sun Melting, and tractor beams are your friend, pulling the asteroids out of the solar melting zone.
There is a built in mod in the game called huge ships, you can turn it on for an existing save. Its meant for late game runs where you just want huge capital flagships
You can change the big cannon fire sequence if you select individual cannons to be left right left right barrel. I found it helps consume less ammo and looks a bit mor fun at least to me. Not sure if u knew...
Lathland, if you hit 'R' after right-clicking to position your ship during battle, you can designate a rotated stance toward the enemy (you know the side where you still had armor). Very useful since your main weapons are turreted... Also, I like to layer small shields behind my large shields giving a backup layer and possibly allow the large to come back up before getting destroyed. *edit I see you did just that, but the smalls can be behind even more armor, giving them better survivability...
Don't know if you figured this out yet but, Stations are the places you can get quests from Bases are just trading posts that you can get quests to destroy
I'd highly suggest to make the hauler a miner as well, because the mining lasers are also useful for salvaging and it kind of makes sense to have your factory ship gather its' own resources.
Modular designs tend to be bulkier, and the main upside of them is that it's easier to optimize their design and output. That also tends to make them much more expensive. I'd advise you save the modular builds for larger ship designs, because that's where they really excel, and instead try out so more open designs on a ship of that size. I find that the largest upside to modules, is that if one goes down, there's plenty of armor between it and the rest, so you don't have to worry about fire, and it'll take a hell of a lot more fire power to finish off your ship. Once again though, much more costly. A word of advice on that front, you can only have so much crew until you earn more, but you can salvage and farm asteroids to your heart's content, so you can go all out on the expensive low-crew requiring stuff, just about anything to get as much potential out of each man as possible. Good luck.
shields are amazing against any damaging weapon but if you go against E.M.P missiles or disruptors armor is the way to go. so its good to have thick armor on the sides and shields on the front because E.M.P missiles try to hit your side and all projectiles go to the front. E.M.P missiles are like an area of effect disruptor
If you salvage the core you can get more expensive materials off those ships. Though I can see why it's just easier to aim for those instead of bridges. =) Enjoying the series thus far, hope to see more.
This game reminds me of the ships in Heat Signature, which reminds me of taking over medium ships to later ram them into massive ships containing high value targets on large, well secured ships, destroying both to varying degrees.
12:25 - What do you mean the electroweapons barely do anything once they break the shields? They can turn off just about anything they hit that takes power. 29:08 - Oh~ That chain reaction.
One thing maybe you could try, you could make a centipede shaped ship, where it has storages down the center, and armor and lasers all around the perimeter. Basically it'd be a sorta rounded rectangle
Ship ideas: Slaaneshi Serpent/Lamia - A slim ship with rows of missiles on the side. A head on the top filled with shields and armour could be added, making it a Lamia. Tzeentch's Harvest, a weird gangly craft that has a bunch of cargo crates, it is capable of mining aestroids.
I kinda do the same thing, I usually put on mirror mode and just draw out a rough random vagule ship shape then use that for my build, adding refinement to it as I go
I actually have a huge number of crew space on my factory/storage ship. Like 650+, because it's about the only ship that actually interacts with space stations to sell, turn in quests, etc. It gets crew and transfers them to my combat ships when they need some additional crew. If they don't need any, then I have a huge workforce to mine and tear up kills. Makes it much quicker to go through a new sector. The design is awful, it's just a large box, but it is quite effective.
Love the video. I have been watching your content since I was a freshman in high school, and needless to say, I am a fan. Hope the moving process goes well!
Get some fighter escorts with nukes. They can be cheap, and while the enemy is focused on the wrath, the fighters can maneuver around and bop the vulnerable systems. Even if the ship focuses on your fighters, the wrath will now have an angle on the vulnerable stuff. Basically a pincer but with nukes and deck guns.
Something funny you could do is make a few missile platforms and, taking advantage of how Malal is currently shaped, have one in the mandible and two in the crook of each wing and just have Malal carry them around, depositing them in strategic locations before a big fight.
18:14 right here you end up taking a lot of damage because your Shields get shut down and face directly towards your enemy I think you would have tooken much less damage if you turn slightly to the side so that your enemy would have to shoot through more armor well your guns could still hit them which honestly makes those mandibles seem quite useful although I think if you were to do this you'd have to defend those engines slightly better as your reactor does end up getting sniped from the side Well I'm on the subject of design recommendations I think maybe one or two heavy lasers in the frontal Shield cluster wouldn't be a bad idea for supporting the main cannons plus they don't run out of ammo so they may be able to handle fights with smaller ships decently well without the main cannons plus they're more precise and have less of a chance of causing too much damage after the enemy is dead

In my experience, Large shields just aren't worth it unless you want to cover a big chunk of the ship and you have PDs. One or two small shields being covered by another one with two or three layers of armor works way better. The only things that have ever broken through this so far were 20 simultaneous disruptor shots or a nuke salvo (Only due to me having a huge shielded hole in the front to house a railgun)
30:05 anyone gonna tell him there’s a manual mode where you drive the ship with wasd and can fire you weapons at will. Did I just make a mistake? Probably. Blow this up so he sees it.
Lathrix when you make a bigger ship could you please design it like a Stellaris Juggernaut? Mammalian might work nicely. Would look absolutely amazing!

You have essentially free space on the whole ship length (Malals Wrath) for good ol' railgun or ion beam laser...or both ?
Structure blocks doesnt block shields projection!!!

Mine is just a brick that has shit tons of guns and shields with a railgun all the way down the middle
There is a dev made mod that allow you to make HUGE ships like really huge
You just need to activate it in mods menu
The mod itself is built in-game
That'd make a fun episode or two to toy with after doing this run for sure.
Shouldn't the Collector/Harvester/Forge be a Nurgle ship? Sorting through the decaying husks of a the fallen to break them down and create anew?
That.
Makes sense
Or the Dark Mechanicus
Don’t forget the tyranids
Lathrix's faction is chaos undivided. Devoted to all of the major gods of chaos not just one.
@@CloakingSilver So you're saying
He's the chaos amongst chaos?
With names like Malal's Wrath and Khorne's Forge, I kinda surprised that none of them are typical Imperium/Chaos broadsiders.

So the Khorne ship is the one without weapons?
I mean, Khorne cares not from where the blood flows
Bleed for the blood god
Strictly melee i guess
In the words of Lotarra Sarin: Fire the ursus claws!
the Khorne ship collects the blood (components) of killed ships
So basically Lathrix has recreated the Orca or Rorqual from Eve Online with his factory ship design. As someone who flies an Orca, I approve! . . . And its gone.

Also.
Try using flak. It really helps against missiles and rails. And even the pulsed laser ones.
should have named the forge ship the 'Red Dwarf' and had a smaller dedicated mining vessel called the 'Blue Midget'
Lathrix seeing the hercules from Aavak: Hummmm interesting
That’s what I’m sayin lol

Every alphabet has letters missing. I've never used Þ, Æ, ß, or ð for instance.
You have to buy the vowels.
you might already know this but the big shields get blocked by wrecks and enemy ships, so be careful when going really close
With long harvesters:
Just put a couple axial mounted railguns in it.
Do you mean spinal mounted?

Cosmoteer video for lunch. Yesss sirrr
Mining lasers also deconstruct wreckage. A lot faster, too.
Every stack of sulphur creates 5 stacks of ammo through the ammo factory. An easy way to 5x your ammo storage is to use ammo factory on your ship.
I like the black and yellow colour scheme on the factory ship, very industrial.
You caught a friend!
I wonder what you could do if you built a ship completely around a Friend to turn him into a turret?
hey lath, awesome series! i can't help but mention it, you should really put ammo factories on your combat ship next to the guns, fed by sulfur containers. you'd be able to go so much longer before refuelling, 1 sulfur makes 20 ammo, an entire pile! anyway, i love what you've done with the Malal's Wrath, the wings make it looks so cool. Not that it's a big deal, but there is a workshop mod that allows you to have ships up to 1000x1000 in size, up from 120x120.

Use scaffolding in front of the mandibles to prevent trapping astroids or other ships.
