  • What's left of the abandoned Pinxton Canal, Derbyshire? We take a walk down the former towpath to find out.
This 3 mile long disused arm off the Cromford Canal has been abandoned since around 1930.
You can walk along the majority of the former canal route, although this is a mixture of dried canal cutting and filled in woodland walks.
There is still plenty to see, from bridges at the Ironville end and the original bridge at it's junction with the also disused Cromford Canal. Beyond Pye Bridge, opencast mining has caused the canal to disappear for a short while, but it can be picked up again with water in on the approach to Pinxton Wharf and the Boat Inn pub.

Really enjoyed this. We have lived in Pinxton for the last 20 years just near the Wharf and have walked to Pye Bridge many times near the old canal. The Wharf and The Boat are wonderful to have in the village and you definitely need to get a drink there!

Glad you enjoyed it. It's a lovely spot isnt it down by the wharf. It's a shame there is that missing bit in the middle of the canal where it was open cast.

Durring the war, my mother lived in Pinxton and went to Henor grammar school. She always talked about walking along the Pinxton Cannal back home when she only went in half day.

Nice one. Really local to where I grew up, but didn't really know this history. Inspires me to get out there.
The bit at the end 'in water' makes it look like it's restored.... deceiving. Have to give The Boat a visit.

      Great stuff Pete.
The boat Inn did look nice. Nice beer garden too. 👍

The Boat Inn was fully refurbished then remained closed for many years - its only recently re-opened (18 months ago?) I've not been in but I'm told the food is very good! The Wharf area is maintained by DCC as a fishing pond. I think one of the main water feeds to the canal comes in somewhere around there as well which is why its still in water.

👍 cheers Paul. Glad they didn't end up turning it until flats or something like most pubs my way. Looks a great spot.

What always got me was if you follow the road into Pinxton town it ends at the canal. It seems that the town was built for the canal?

You're right. I suppose back in the very early days, pre roads and railways. Everything would have arrived via that little Pinxton arm?
