Frank Lampard has launched a verbal assault on air against the LBC talk show host James O'Brien after he felt the presenter was accusing him of not looking after his children properly. The Chelsea star has recently split from girlfriend Elen Rives.
Premiership star Frank Lampard phoned in to a live radio show today to defend himself against his former fiancée's claims he is 'heartless'.
The Chelsea and England star launched into a bitter tirade at LBC presenter James O'Brien after being accused of abandoning his two daughters after the split last year.
Clearly furious, he rang in after O'Brien said men who let their children live in inferior circumstances to them were 'weak and scum'.
Miss Rives had claimed yesterday that she, Luna, two, and Isla, one, were living in a small flat while Lampard had turned their £8.5million townhouse into a 'bachelor pad'.
But today he angrily dismissed claims he had forced her out of their home and was seeing other girls.
He told LBC: 'The hardest part of this whole break-up for me is not waking up with my kids every day. It breaks my heart - do you think I'm happy?'
Lampard, 30, indicated it was in fact his girlfriend who had decided to move out in the high-charged call in which he criticised O'Brien for even discussing their break-up.
During the extraordinary 15-minute rant, he blasted: 'I hope one day your wife or girlfriend doesn't come to you and say she doesn't want to be with you, and that means you won't see the kids a few days a week.'
He added: 'You don't know anything about me. I find it insulting that you are insinuating that I am weak and scum because I have not fought tooth and nail.
'You're saying "Any man that lets his kids live in inferior circumstances to him is weak and scum". You're insinuating that about me.
'You're degrading to them as a human being... I grade myself as a human being as how well I bring up my kids.'
He continued: 'I have woken up sometimes and seen a newspaper report of me coming out of a bar or club and they take pictures of two different women who I have never ever spoken to and say I spent all night sitting next to them.
'Then I have to wake up and listen to idiots like you, I have to put up with it and I've got to keep my mouth shut.'
Lampard said he was already 'distressed' because today was the first anniversary of his beloved mother Pat's death and the radio's discussion had made him and his family even more upset.
'My sister has been listening to this and it's the anniversary of my mum's death, so do you think my sister needs to hear you saying things like that on a radio station,' he said.
'Sometimes you need to think about things before you speak about them. I'll speak to you man to man about that, forget the radio station, I'll speak to you man to man.'
Pat, 58, died after battling pneumonia for 10 days. Her son was extremely close to her and wore a black armband on the pitch following her death.
His comments today come just days after Rives revealed she is struggling to come to terms with life without him after their seven-year relationship ended in November.
'He is so heartless. He's moved on and is seeing other girls,' the former air hostess, 34, said.
'I text him to tell him I'm not coping, but he doesn't care. I cry to him on the phone but I get nothing from him. No emotion, just blank. He's a b*****d.'
During a night out at the London nightclub Bungalow 8, she said: 'I still love Frank. I've been crying all night. I want things to work out, but don't know if it will.
'I don't know if he'll come round. I don't know what to do. To be honest I'm not doing very well. He's in our house which he has turned into a bachelor pad.
'And I'm in a small flat waiting for my own flat with our two daughters. The house is in his name. We're not married so I'm not getting the house.
'I miss him but he is with another girl. He says she is nothing serious but in the papers it looks more serious. I text him but get no response'
'Everyone says I'm the strong one, but I'm not coping. I'm 34 and old now, what am I supposed to do? It's too late for me,' she told the Daily Mirror.
'The papers say I'm 29, but I'm 34. I don't know what I want to do now. I'm not like Coleen [Wayne Rooney's wife] who is 23 with a great career - so I don't know how I can move on.'
The footballer, who earns £120,000 a week split from Rives last November after a seven-year relationship.
He has recently been linked with millionaire's daughter Saskia Boxford, 23, but has insisted he is not dating her and they only had dinner together once.
