  • Sept 2023 update: I am offering a Microtonality Crash Course beginning October 7, 2023! In 8 weekly Zoom sessions we will explore the mathematics of harmony, just intonation, infinite divisions of the octave, and the farthest reaches of n-dimensional pitch space. Participants will tear down the walls of 12-tone equal temperament and develop techniques for exploring new harmonic architecture. Check out the syllabus for full details: drive.google.c...

1:57 Aaaaaa, 7:6 is pretty underated above 6:5, in combination with the fourth, I always love that ice-ish sound that happens within these ratios

What do you mean by "above 6:5"?

i was messing around on an oud tonight and noticed i was playing the flat sixths wide without trying to - it reminded me of this video and the 13:8 Ab

Hi , I have a Ukrainian Chernihiv Tsymbali , is your diagram the definitive tuning for Tsymbali ? Or do Ukrainian Hutsuls tune differently. Mine ha two long bridge strips and a 3 course separate bridge top right and a single bridge bottom left. I have no idea of correct using. Can you help please as I want to learn my instrument for playing traditional Ukrainian music. Thanks kindly if you ca help ?

The tuning in this video generally reflects the standard positions of pitches on a tsimbl of this design, but this specific just intonation tuning is my idiosyncratic preference. Here is a diagram of the intended positions of pitches for my instrument: drive.google.com/file/d/12pVyYQ1sAO5wBrXs9c7vJoQ6Cft849Pk/view?usp=sharing
You could either tune the pitches by ear or with an electronic tuning meter. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for the chart, am even more confused as it is not what I expected, and seems to differ wildly from other charts have managed to get, hence seeing no definitive chart. Have looked at Dulcimers, Cimbalon, Santur, and all with different tunings, even bridge design layouts and no standardisation or explanations. Have been told that Tsymbali , are tuned to suit Ukrainian cultural melodies from the Hutsul areas of Ukraine close to Romania, which I believe is where the dominant Romanian popularity of the like instrument is strong. Am not sure if you understand Ukrainian music as I do, but guess your are very technical about the instrument. For me, as long as I can play the Do Ray Me Fah So Lah Te Do scale then could teach myself quickly how to play tunes. Then having a system of sharps and flats that can be easily understood as the black notes by comparison on the piano, I could be playing in no time at a al. But my brain as a guitarist and mandolin player is not wired to even begin to understand the archaic charts of the like instruments that have seen, suggesting hours and hours of learning and familiarality in the bizzare logic of the chart. Obviously the world is full of skilled musicians who are expert exponents when seen playing on youtube. So, you seem to suggest each musician works a system sui ted to their individual preference for note layouts ? Looks like I could be heading that way too, as these charts to me are hopelessly illogical. Where have I misunderstood tunings ? help ? please ? anyone ? am quite desperate and depressed now, sorry to say. I had hoped for a Ukrainian musician owning same instrument put me on the right track.

@@xtra4u210 I am not an expert, but I believe there exists a variety of string layouts and instrument designs. Upload an image of your instrument here, and I might be able to give some advice. The picture of the Ukrainian tsymbaly on wikipedia appears to have the same layout as mine: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsymbaly

I agree, so you are lucky, I have seen maybe three different bridge versions of mine, hence struggling to understand the extra bridges. I have pictures but they cannot be attached here.
