I loved all the tips and enjoyed hearing all the progress your daughter has made. Great job ! I will definitely try some of the tips for one of my kids who needs a little more confidence in reading.
This is so helpful! I just instituted 'mandatory' independent reading on our 7 year old's daily checklist and this helped me return to my original thought of not mandating reading. I love to read, and even though it is hard to find time with 4 young children, I need to do a better job of modeling.
I love the way you talk about your daughter. Question: have you considered she may be dyslexic? It's on a spectrum and 30-50% of people with ADHD have some form of dyslexia. I thought my son's reading struggles were ADHD (and it's related) but ultimately he's dyslexic. His reading skills don't match his reading ease. Basically, you're doing everything right anyway for dyslexia but it's helped me understand better! It can affect other areas, too.
Thank you for pointing that out as I have read it’s common with adhd. I’ve looked into it and I definitely think it’s a possibility and have adjusted accordingly. I am hoping to get her more formally evaluated in the future. Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated!
@@michellegf I'm completely in the weeds with it right now, myself, but I do have some resources I found helpful. There's a podcast episode of Melissa & Lori Love Literacy where they interview Dr. Richard Gentry that I highly recommend listening to. Additionally, I would look into a developmental eye exam. You'll need to find an optometrist that specializes in them and vision therapy. My son has trouble with tracking and convergence, which is also very common in ADHD, and can mimic or just make dyslexia worse. My son isn't formally diagnosed, but we have no doubt. He's had some testing done through his OT but that cannot be a formal diagnosis. I checked with an expert who told me that unless I was putting him in a brick and mortar school there isn't much value in getting an official diagnosis, but it's changed how I teach him. It basically comes down to a lot more practice with phonograms and understanding that his brain just glitches sometimes.
