Scott: I grew up watching this great TV show: The many loves of Dobie Gillis, (l959-l963) While living in Las Vegas (l992-l994) I wrote to Dwayne Hickman's address inquiring about his height and weight during his Dobie Gillis TV series. To my surprise, he personally answered my questions and also sent me his autographed picture as Dobie Gillis. In 2002, I also wanted to know this same information from Sheila James-Kuehl, who played: "Zelda Gilroy", the brainy teenager with brunette bangs after Dobie Gillis. So, I wrote to her and she also told me how tall and how much she weighed as Zelda Gilroy during the TV series. And of course, she also sent me her autograph picture. And by coincidence, I told Sheila James-Kuehl that during my junior/senior high school years, I was also the same height and weight as Dwayne Hickman. AND, that there was also a "Zelda Gilroy" in my life with the same height as her and also very much interested in me during those two high school years. We did not marry after graduation but remained friends. Scott, you can imagine what this song and TV series means to me...
One of the coolest themes to a series . GILLIS last year was the lead in to THE BEVERLY HILLBILLES first year . Hickman worked on THE BOB CUMMINGS SHOW produced and written by Paul Henning who was doing the same chores for the Hillbillies .
I read somewhere that when the "Cleopatra" cost overruns caused 20th Century-Fox to temporarily halt all production operations, "Dobie" and maybe one or two other TV series were the only productions on the lot that kept going.
I'm sure there are. Pillsbury's sponsorship lasted through the 1960-'61 season, when Colgate-Palmolive replaced it for season three. Primary sponsor Philip Morris ended theirs after season three, while Colgate continued for the final season, with some "participating" sponsors on alternate weeks.
Lots of shows. Actors who are under 18 have to attend school a certain number of hours a day, which cuts into the amount of time they have available to rehearse and film and adds to the expense of a movie or TV show. If they can find actors who can -- ehh... kind of pass for high school age and are 18 and over, that's the option they'll go with. It's aaaaaalllll about money, Michael.
Just a Sensational jazzy score from a great television series from a time that we will never see again ever again Period!!!!!

@@hectorpena7068 I understand.
Lionel Newman composed the music . He was 20th Century Fox’s musical supervisor at the time. His relative Randy would eventually follow the same path.
My favorite
RIP Dwayne Hickman who recently passed away Jan 2022 at age 87. You'll alwa6s be remembered for your portrayal of Dobie. 😇

dobies theme is allway playin in my mind...in resting contemplative mood
Swingin' saxophone counterpoint! Composer Lionel Newman was Randy Newman's uncle.
The Dobie Gillis DVDs have these sponsor credits on seasons three and four.
Colgate-Palmolive was the series' alternate sponsor in the 1961-'62 season.
3:26- "'DOBIE GILLIS' was brought to you by---- MARLBORO! The filter cigarette with the unfiltered taste."
loved DOBY GILLIS
Wouldja believe I saw the WHOLE SERIES while I was in the hospital?
I wonder if they did cast commercials? Like Maynard wouldn't dig that sort of jazz man!
But he'd do it, cause like, think how many Dizzy Gillespie records he could buy with that kind of bread.
Mean Mr. Tibbs Naw, too much WORK!
Wonder if there are any credits from the days Pillsbury was co-sponsor?

@@fromthesidelines Just saw the Pillsbury cake mix commercial from 1960
They did not have the sponsors on the DVD sets for this show but do for The Londer even though they are both from Shout Factory.
I've never seen Wildroot Cream Oil before. I figure it was a CP hair tonic.
I wonder how many TV shows try to pass their twenty-something year old actors as high school student age?
