Harald Winkler aka MEUFL, a friend of mine created a few years ago a 2 person (side by side) velomobile which was called in German language "Asphalttretboot".
This year he could finish step 2 for his velomobile and made it ready for amphibian use.
There are for sure still some little things to improve. But the first prototype works already pretty good.
Me for myself it was such a fun to have after 2 years again a camcorder in my hands.

Hallo Captain Bartolo, vielen Dank für den begeisterten Kommentar. Der Film ist ja eher spontan entstanden und ich habe irgendwo auf einer meiner Festplatten noch einen weiteren Film mit dem Harald, der fast fertig ist. Im Augenblick komme ich aber leider nicht dazu den zu suchen und zu finishen :-(. Viele Grüße vom Ammersee
Haha this is awesome. I just thought about a boat tender that is also an amphibian velomobile. You could go from your anchored boat to the coast, drive on land, go shopping and back without messing around. Or explore the countryside of some island you sailed to :)
But I'd make it longer so it's more efficient on water and also so you could have a roof and sleep in it. Like a camping velomobile.

A delightful display of great mechanical ingenuity! It is difficult enough to build an ordinary velomobile. But amphibious too! I wish I were smart enough to build things like that.
+kstadden Thank you for your nice comment. The best is if you try to hold things as simple as possible. So you can focus on the important stuff and have later less trouble with parts which can cause problems. If you never try to solve a challenge like building a velomobile you will not learn or getting better. Try and error is a pretty good method to get better and better with every new project.
You can tell just by the short amount of time it was in the water that it would barely last long before sinking.
Love it. Have seen a few attempts at amphibious cycles on RUclips. The only other one I've seen that was any good was a plywood canoe with a very well engineered drivetrain - it converted from a trike to a canoe at the waterside. Have to say though that yours is the more impressive in that you can drive out of the water up a slipway! Well done :)

@Georgi Expert The velomobile is not made by myself and not my idea! I have made only the video about it. I have made and realized some other recumbents like the "Razz-Fazz" and more with the special interest of recumbent racing. But I like to combine things and do unusual stuff ;-).

It is not my project. I have made only the video for Harald Winkler, who is the developer of this very special velomobile. You can read a little bit more about it in the description of the video.
3 years ago I started a new video about Harald aka MEUFL, but I have actual not the time to finish this video, because I am working on so many different projects that I would need a 48 hour day to finish more ;-).

Have to use stainless steel all the way it seems to me as in water the bike part will become very rusty in now time.
Hi Klimaat Konijn, Unfortunately you have not seen this very light velomobile from MEUFL in reality. On the velomobile itself are not so many parts which would start very quick to get rusty. The whole thing is mostly build with carbon fibers and only the wheels, chain and derailleur and brakes are from metal and you can protect them with a good wax from corrosion. The lake (Lake Ammersee) where this test was happen is a sweet water lake.
Intriguing build. Two nits, though: first, the fussing around getting it ready for the water - I was expecting to see him cruise right into the water at speed and just keep going. Second, that drive for the prop looks overly complex, I would think you lose a lot of efficiency in all the twists and turns of the power train. Just nits, not bashing.

What you was expecting, to see him cruise into the water, was more than one time to see in the video. Your so called "fussing around" shows only how to get the "Asphalt-Tretboot" ready for the water because it is a normal velomobile. That this drive is in your opinion "overly complex" is not really true. This kind of machine chain can be twisted a lot without increasing the friction inside of the chain too extreme and it's only a single 90 degree turn the chain is guided. If you can tell me a much better and cheaper solution like this one, which is at least so simple, please let me know. I am so curious to see a better and efficient one made from your side. A last thing to remember for you. I am not the designer of this velomobile and i have only made a short video about a interesting project from a friend, nothing more.
Eddythemadmechanic Actually yes, I was expecting to see him cruise right on into the water, drop his prop, and keep on going. I'm guessing English isn't your first language, do you understand what it means to "pick nits"? It means to focus on a minor issue - I am acknowledging by that phrase that these are not major flaws.
I have often spent time contemplating pedal-to-prop drives and have a few ideas, but I don't have time to build any of them and try them out. It is interesting to see the setup on the lower unit as I have never actually seen one of that design. I have envisioned such a design, but always thought it would be too complex or compromise hydrodynamics or mechanical efficiency.
Neither my original post nor this one were intended to be overly critical or insulting. I read the description, so I did not assume you were the designer or builder of this amphibian, so my comments were not personal in any way. Just me thinking out loud about an intriguing build.

The use of this twisted chains is pretty popular and the price to power output ratio is pretty good. Professor Günther Rochelt who build the "Musculair 1" and "Musculair 2" used this principle of the twisted chain there too! In his human-powered aircrafts you need every Watt you can get for take off. With a normal bicycle chain this wouldn't work so well like with those little machine chains.
I was working for him at the university of Hamburg on his "Solair II".
My friend MEUFL who build this swimming velomobile used only cheap materials and invested only his time to realize this project. It shows only the possibilities which are sleeping in this kind of HPV.
Eddythemadmechanic Interesting. I have been interested in an efficient, lightweight, and mechanically simple pedal powered prop that could be readily adapted to a canoe, kayak, or small boat. This design could be adapted without cutting holes in the hull below the waterline. I'll have to look into that design further.

+effyleven No question that this amphibian velomobile is a compromise. But i am pretty curious how your design will look like and how good it performs! Please send me pictures or a link to a video with it in action on the water and on land.
too complicated
The design is really simple and it is very lightweight too and this created and made with a pretty small budget and mostly from old used stuff! Surprise me with a solution which is working well and still simpler than this one!
+Eddythemadmechanic what I did mean is the change from the street to the water, would be nice, if you didn't have to change anything. But all in all it surely is a great idea 😉
Hi Johnny Pacheco, Now i got it ;-). You can drive around permanent with the buoyancy bodies but this looks not so pretty. The drive unit for the water is a different story.
