      he has a rich film career which means he went to a ton of auditions and actively sought work. don't delude yourself that you can achieve anything by not giving a fuck. Bill Murray works hard and clearly gives a general fuck about life

      +El Rocky Raccoon I know. my comment is a bit too negative now that I reread it. I meant that "not giving a fuck" is actually highly maintained facade (the Italians call it sprazaturra) and people who look effortless and not giving a fuck are actually the hard working people. people who actually don't give a fuck are usually unemployed and wake & bake (I love weed but I must admit most stoners are lazy cunts).

      The only thing absurd is comparing the likes of Bill Murray to the legendary Groucho Marx. Murray's lack of enthusiasm and effort is being mistaken for artistic expression. He will be remembered for Ghostbusters, a film that was memorable in its own right and could have survived without his mild responses to anything remotely consequential to his character.

    I got a "no one will ever believe you" Bill moment at an airport in Alberta.
    Basically we had a conversation where he said he could take all my stuff and no one would ever believe me if I tried to say so. Then shit got real (this is paraphrased because I can't remember the word for word exchange):
    Bill: "Yeah, I could just take your stuff. Done". (exact words)
    Me: "Why don't you"?
    Bill: "I probably have cooler stuff than you". (exact words)
    Me: "Yeah... I guess".
    Bill: "A thief with little power in the world wants your stuff and mine. But he has to grab it and run. I could just snag it and walk away no problem. The thief needs your stuff and can't get it easily. I don't need or want your stuff and I can have it easily. The more power you have, the more you realize there's nothing to spend it on". (paraphrase)
    Me: "So we only want it because we can't have it"?
    Bill: "Do you want to tell anyone this conversation happened"? (paraphrase)
    Me: "Yes".
    Bill: "Think you will"? (exact words)
    Me: "If I can be anonymous, maybe".
    Bill: "Good plan; you can't tell anyone about this because you'll be a liar and no one likes liars. But you want to tell people because everyone likes people who have met Bill Murray".
    Me: "Only you could get away with saying that and not be pompous".
    Bill: "I think you still don't see your problem".
    After that, he just walked away. Black/grey long and heavy coat, four buttons visible on the front, no scarf, sort of leather looking shoulder covers, hands never left his coat pockets. a smaller grey jacket underneath.
    I still don't understand the story. The real knife twister is; I can't tell anyone about it so I can never get help to figure it out.

    Yes, Bill Murray is one of if not the ultimate artist. This is because he realizes that it is his job, his mission to go out there as far as possible but unlike many great artists he is working or conscious of coming back. All artists can learn from this; it is not how far you can go, it is the ability to come back that counts. Artists need to show it is okay to go out, far out because it is possible to come back, maybe not all the way back but back to a place of stability that can once again pivot and take a turn to once again explore.

    Bill Murray has been my hero for a couple months now. My school went on a trip to a book store where we were allowed to get one book for the school and one for ourselves. I meandered around a bit, then stumbled upon "The Big Bad Book of Bill Murray". This book gives an A to Z description of everything important in his life. It is the greatest thing I have ever read. If you think this video is amazing, you should read this book.This man has done more than you could possibly imagine. He named his dog bark for fuck sake! How awesome is that?!

    I don't doubt that Bill Murray or Larry David and their like are funny people. But I definitely do think there is a cult of personality around them that makes them seem more funny than they actually are. It begins with people thinking "Oh, that's Bill Murray, everyone says he's funny, therefore literally everything he does is funny."

      No, it is not. Many people have money, time, and nothing else to do, and yet almost no one acts like Bill Murray. I mean acts as in how he behaves. He could be on yachts or villas or any number of things which are common from rich and famous people do, but he does not. The video literally talked about this.

    • @tooties545
      @tooties545 8 лет назад +2

      +Loathomar Common for other rich people, not Bill Murray. That's it. if Bill Murray wasn't rich, would he take a taxi to San Francisco and drive while cabbie practices his saxophone? Crashing private parties without negative consequences? Sorry, only with fame.

    • @Loathomar
      @Loathomar 8 лет назад

      Achilles Well ya, if someone who was not Bill Murray did the things he did there would clearly be negative consequences. His fame and money allow him to do what he does without negative consequences, but money, time, and nothing else to do, doesn't really explain him, so it is not that simple.

    What really capture the essence of Murray for me is his monologue in Tootsie; it goes something like
    ""I don’t want a full house at the Winter Garden. I want people who just came out of the worst rainstorm in history. These are people who are alive on the planet… until they dry off. I wish I had a theater that was only open when it rained,"
    That really encapsulates this feelings of homelessness - the futility of trying to achieve a personal connection with strangers.

    I was on a golf course 30 years ago and Bill Murray was there. He and a friend got paired up with a couple of teen-aged kids. During the round one of the kids flew the green with his approach shot and it rolled into the parking lot. Murray walked up and peered toward the lot and in his Carl Spackler voice quipped " I think it rolled under that Buick over there".

    Gurdjieff spoke of many things, one of which was our imagination and spoke of mankind as essentially being asleep, we sift through our imagination every day, we chew over thoughts and images aka to ruminate, this, is part of why we are unconscious. Yes the imagination is important, especially for people like Bill Murray and other artists, but then comes the negative aspect of it, and we're back to square one. So we have to notice when we're daydreaming, and how we're feeling. So I'm not surprised to hear that Bill Murray is into Gurdjieff, because he's always seemed unique and unconventional.

    Its more than simply his apathetic detachment that makes his characters fascinating - its the fact that he manages to become active in his role only when he chooses too. When it really matters. When something has clearly affected him. He interacts with a deliberate and disarming awkwardness that makes his lines seem heartfelt and almost unscripted. Its a style more often seen in British comedy, where being "Unprofessional" among professionals marks you out as the true hero - the guy who cant keep it together, or doesnt want to bother, but tries anyway. (See The Life of Brian, Shaun of the Dead, or even Mr Bean).

      At my local hollywood palms when it opened they did a showing of what about bob. Richard Dreyfuss was there. He dodged questions about "what was it like to work with Bill Murray" or seemed rather irked about the whole thing. Possibly because of how distanced Murray was from the seriousness of Dreyfuss' own rigid acting method. It was fucking hilarious when he started going on some rant about the government not being taught to children in schools. Long story short they must have some sort of beef with each other which makes What About Bob? even more special to me.

    • @Bix12
      @Bix12 8 лет назад +1

      Civics should be taught in school. The reason it isn't is so when these students become adults they won't have any idea how our government works and will be far, far less likely to participate in the process thus making controlling the masses all that much easier. I really don't understand why you would think not teaching that to our children a bad thing or something to be scoffed at. We are going to hell in a hand basket, and most people are greasing the skids. If that's case (and it is) we deserve everything we get.

    • @WitzyZed

      ***** I completely understand that it's an issue he's passionate about, and why shouldn't he use that spotlight to call attention to the issue. But he did this in Naperville, Illinois, quoting Wikipedia here "Naperville was voted the second-best place to live in the United States by Money magazine in 2006" there are some of the highest funded school districts here, and US government is a required course in our high school curricula. So it didn't really make sense to be preaching this in that location. On top of that the awkwardness beforehand of him apparently despising Bill Murray.

    • @hawks5999

      @Bix12 8 лет назад

      Naperville should be the norm for ALL school districts/income demographics for the entire country. Rather than throw stones at what should be happening everywhere, we should throw stones at the overwhelming majority of the country that this isn't happening. I've noticed that people condemn the good, rather than direct that condemnation where it belongs. It's comparable to the trend in this country that embraces ignorance while disparaging intelligence.

    tim heidecker took the idea of bill murray acting into a dadaist self detatchment where the actor himself does know he is creating meaning out of something but not always aware where the meaning will go or what the audience or even himself will want it to be.
    eric andre does the bill murray sarcasm and detatchment through editing and decisions that are beyond the audience's awareness of self, creating havoc and confusion for everyone including himself. he plays the part of cthulu wearing a top hat singing "hello my baby" while stomping orphans to death into a mush used that will feed the hungry children of the world.

    Bill Murray is an icon, everyone knows who he is. He instantly stands out as being different, because he is. He is completely in the moment and transcends the norm. He isn't like anyone else because he doesn't react like anyone else, he somehow sees everything in a different light.
    It would be interesting if we all did this. There would be no expectation because there would be nothing to expect. If we all lived in the moment, everything would be a surprise, we would never know what was coming next. Every second of every minute would be an adventure.
    Rock on Bill Murray. Keep doing you. Perhaps someday we'll all learn to do the same.
