To me this is the one true G.I. Joe continuity. The cartoon is fun and all but it was just an action cartoon. The G.I. Joe Comics under Larry Hama is a Soap Opera. It has the character beats off of each other. The family dynamic between Joes. The will they won't they with Snake Eyes and Scarlett. The inner struggles of our characters on both sides. The love story between Destro and The Baroness. The romance between Flint and Lady Jaye (I know that was in the cartoon too). All of this is as Soapy as Days of Our Lives.

Ironically enough, I was likely reading these comics during a long summer vacation, age 9/10, while my sister had Days Our Lives playing in the background. I was probably almost as interested in Bo, Patch and the drama on that show as I was by Snake-Eyes and Scarlett. Except Days didn't have ninjas and massive underground desert bases.
Man, being an 80s kid was dope.

For a really long time all Marvel Comics said "Stan Lee Presents" in front of the title page of each book. This happened all the way until like the early 2000's. Even long after Stan had stopped being involved with the comics in the late 70's. So since this entire run was created by Marvel in theory GIJOE happens within the 616 Marvel Universe.

My brothers and I started collecting these G.I. Joe comics here in Australia around 1990, and sometime last year I finally completed the collection. I sat down to read the entire run, in order, earlier this year, but called it quits at about 135. The ninja storylines had become tediously dominant, with many great characters almost completely neglected. The comics (and especially the toy line) took a serious turn for the worse after 1991/92, so it's no surprise that both were canned in '94. There are some good issues towards the end, and the final issues are quite valuable now because of their low-print status. The toy line was clearly the highlight of the ARAH universe, surely one of the best of all time. Yo Joe!

Reading it straight through, you realize how haphazard and disjointed the overall story is. Hama never had an overall plan. He has said many times it was just a toy commercial. Still a great series if you stick to the Snake Eyes backstory. Good job on this.

I have re-read issues 1-10 several times, and issue 1 probably more times than any other comic that I own. I think issues 1-60 are all pretty good -- with kind of a slow stretch somewhere around issues 25-35 where they are no longer doing stand alone issues, but the connected story isn't really going anywhere yet.
Beyond issue 60 the best stuff is the things that get into Snake-Eyes back story, and especially the arc that gives the back story for Baroness and how she and Destro met.
Issue 155 is a super classic. Amazing way to end the series (at the time) and well worth owning for any fan.
I strongly recommend the TPB of issues 1-10, and any way you can get your hands on issue 155.

Great video - really enjoyed it. Just wanted to chime in with my take on the discussion of how 'worth it' it is to read the comics.
Rip Cord is one of my fav toys and I really like the arc that he features in as kind of the B plot for quite a few issues. Also the first dozen or 2 issues of "Special Missions" have a lot of cool stand alone stories, which I like because they spotlight some of the 88-89 characters that otherwise don't show up much. I like them because they remind me of the stand alone style of those first 10 or 11 issues.

I was a comic only fan. To hell with the cartons. Why? Because of the Weather Dominator mini series. The part with Snake Eyes and Shipwreck. Snake Eyes in drag, Timber in disguise and just before helping operate the mine car. To me, they turned GI Joe into a Scooby Doo show. And Polly was Scrappy Doo. Never watched the cartoon after that.
The Stories were so disjointed due to Hasbro. new vehicles and new characters had to be introduced and shown, no matter what it meant to Hama story plot lines.
The GI Joe does keep going on past 155, but with a different company.

    • @Xero-Studios

The show is campy as shit. But I still really enjoy it.
I for sure enjoy the darker issues of the comic but the comic can also be campy as shit too like the cartoon.
But yeah I can totally respect that opinion, they have a different vibe for sure.

Megatron was probably injured from basically blowing himself up in the classic Transformers "Gone But Not Forgotten", where Shockwave takes advantage of Megatron's paranoia that Prime will return and manipulates him into going ballistic and basically blowing himself up. I agree with you about the cartoon being superior; the comic had a lot of great issues, but the cartoon just had so much going for it. It had the right mixture of humor, action and charm. The soundtrack, the voice-acting, all of it was great. As far as "Stan Lee Presents", that was something that was put before the title of every Marvel Comic. It might even still be. It just sort of a way of referencing and paying homage to Stan Lee and a way of making it seem like there was still a connection between Stan Lee and Marvel.

A movie, like a Terrorist/War-Romance, with Destro & the Baroness, might be kinda sweet, or her kinda secretly dating someone from the Joes, like only once a year, 1 day being just the human beings they might be, and after that it's fighting each other again! 😅
About the comics, I think the best 2 stories, don't know the titles, but one is Snake Eyes vs Storm Shadow in a jungle, fighting for the information of a satelite that came down, then it's Snake Eyes vs a Tiger, who goes full "The Revenant" on him, and Shadow Storm, though first leaving him, now saving him, it was very humane.
And the other one is Cobra creating new landmass with Tsunami-Machines (!?), nobody took possession of it, so Cobra took it, hence Cobra Island, I guess. But before that happens the Joes fight their way in, annihilating about everything & everyone, but at the very last moment their surperios called them off, they had no political jurisdiction there.
I was shocked, and impressed, the Joes won the fight, but lost the battle, because of Red Tape, politics.
Back then totaly new concept for me, kinda smart, for a comic about Military Fantasy... 😬👍🏻
