    I made about $90,000 to date this year installing and servicing residential AC as a side thing. And I'm not licensed. Likely know more than 99% of the lunatics who are. I've seen some really bad work done by the few big HVAC firms around here.

    • @lobehold2263
      @lobehold2263 4 года назад +10

      Cant say I condone that but your also right about the amount of lunatics around. At the end of the day neither the licensed idiots or unlicensed pros are helping the trade in the longrun. What we need is licensed people with the knowledge and pride to be successful.
      I would recommend working towards your license in order to help you with your future endeavors. It really does open more doors. Not to mention you should be insured just in case something happens.
      Edit: No disrespect btw. I came from the same boat as you so I know its not easy but it is certainly worth it.

      @@lobehold2263 I'm not a young guy looking to get started. I'm a 60 year-old retired electronic/mechanical engineer. I worked at GE and later for Siemens. I just enjoy doing this (residential AC) in my retirement in addition to tutoring college students on high-level math such as physics and mathematical analysis.

    Nice video Acservicetech. I have been gaining a lot more confidence over the four years doing this. The thing that makes me frustrated is I can't remember stuff and I am always having to go to my truck and double check my notes. The basics I remember a lot but it's trying to keep each manufacturer designs and operations of there equipment that gets frustrating at times. Nice video again, like hearing how people get started.

    Craig. I have always appreciated your channel. You helped me out a couple of years ago when I had a furnace problem. I always say that God put me in this trade. I was going through an attitude adjustment 27 years ago. I had been in construction for almost 20 years and I started back to community college to become a building inspector. My first class was Introducing Mechanical systems. I called a friend who was a service manager at the time and August 9th he hired me as a Warehouse/filter guy for $7.50 per hour. I didn't know how I was going to make it but that was $43 per hour ago. I retire at the end of the year and it's been the best trade ever.
    Mentor Moment: I did a lot of water source heat pump buildings with a closed loop. My journeyman had me make up a sprinkler setup with 3 sprinklers attached with a 50ft hose and 2 short hoses that if I lost a spray pump in a fluid cooler then I could put my sprinkler setup on the tube bundle turn the water on reset the units and it bought me time if I had to wait for a part. Thank you again for your time. Have a great weekend. God bless.

    Great story !
    Craig ,I love it.
    I started out at 17 yo.,kinda of inquisitive as you mentioned,which bothered my very first job supervisor ( that job lasted less than 2 months) , at the time my dad owned a dairy ice cream and milk business,when he told me, there refrigeration technician needed help,well Robert was his name and i sure learned alot from him as far as trouble shooting and low pressure refrigerants .502..12..500..etc...( antique now),i have never worked for any one but myself since), well one day he gave me a coplematic compressor and sent me to Del Rio Tx to change it out in a ice cream freezer..( probably to get me away from all questions for one day.lol),
    Nervous was not quite the word,i was scared.but wanted to show my dad and Bobby, i could do this,well it took all day,but i saw that evening that freezer at -20* below..and i was on a mountain..
    This was in late 1980's..fast forward..I have been able to provide for my family and love the challenge.i most recently ( past 12 years started residental,and have been doing mainly that now, as you mentioned you need to learn electrical.plumbing etc.also.
    What a rewarding career.at 57 now im still at,but a bit less due to renal failure..( kidney transplant), but i cannot complain...such a rewarding career..
    And i want to tell you thank you, for your story and sharing your knowledge,your quite the assett in this industry..love your channel
    God bless you and your family always!

    It's great to see people make videos about the stuff they are good at and actually do for a living. Through the years I've worked on a few industrial air conditioning systems and chillers but have just worked on the control side of it all. The refrigeration side always fascinated me ever sense I was young so I've learned a lot about it on my own through the years. It took a lot of years before the light came on when I tried to understand an ammonia absorption refrigerator. I bought your book from Amazon an am a little over half way through it. I think knowing how something works is ninety percent of fixing it and the rest, tools and parts. I've never seen a book that explains how to work on and check air conditioners as well as yours. You not only explain how they work but how the valves, tools and equipment that's used.

    • @acservicetechchannel
      @acservicetechchannel  4 года назад

      Yes I agree completely. You need to know how it works before fixing it. Thats exactly why I wrote the book. I as a teacher was unable to find a book that showed the procedures and tool use mixed with the actual methods for checking the charge. I really am glad that you are enjoying the book! I am always looking for people to write a little review on amazon if you were inclined. It not, totally fine and I really appreciate your comment Dan, thanks!

      I would say that you want people in the community to already know you so that you can work mainly on referrals. If people in the community don't know you, you are probably going to have to pay a decent amount on ads until you can get to the referrals stage. It may be a rough first 1-3 years but if you can build it, it may start to mature after that. It really depends on the area and the clientele in the area. Thanks!

      I really don't think you need high level match. You need to know the tape measure in and out and be quick with fraction subtraction/addition. Basic math skills fast. He needs to know about the building structure as a whole, terminology, joist and stud sizes as well as tool use. The only issue is how much he wants it. You can't put the desire in him but he needs to want it. On the other side, people do catch fire and passion by what they see in others. Continue to be passionate and express your concerns and see what happens. He is already in a much better boat then many because I can tell that you care about him learning, thanks!

Do you find that there are better brands of HVAC units for example we have a Rudd unit at our house and my neighbor is actually in the field and is a carrier fan? The reason for my question is because I like high quality so that you hopefully don’t have to work on the unit as much. With that said what are your thoughts on mini split units? These are loaded questions lol. If you do refer me to a video it just tells me that I have not done my part as a student! Thanks again!!

    no matter how much you know and how brilliant you are " the aha moments" should never end, they day they do, is the same day you shut down and quit learning and bettering yourself!
    some times the "aha moments" are simply you remembering something you'd done many times but forgotten until spending a bit of time doing it again, the "brain bulb" lights up and you smile/grin at yourself, thinking I almost did that the hard way when i can do it this way and save time and labor with the exact same outcome.
    I'm not good at teaching, short temper and not good eat explaining things what so ever, I'm more of a point me at the problem and I'll obliterate it person lol.

    • @acservicetechchannel

      So it sounds like she may have a negative pressure problem where there are leaks in the supply duct in either an attic or crawlspace which makes the inside of the house go to negative pressure and pulls air from the path of least resistance which is next door. An air cleaner or uv light won't really take any smells out of the air like you are mentioning, but anyway those are my initial thoughts, thanks!

      You certainly can make more money but you need to really know both service and install in your niche. Instead of working 40 hours or 60, it may be closer to 80 hours a week and a lot of research when looking into products and selling jobs. You can easily get into a jam by not pricing jobs well. In the beginning, you may need to advertise and really try to get your name out there to make sure there is enough steady work because you will blow through it very fast. Everything takes time to learn, thanks!
