RIP, the legendary Barry Harris. So jealous of the people in that room (I’ve never met Barry in personal). May his music will keep touching people’s hearts. Long live Barry, Bird, and bebop!
To me, the fact that the guy is coming up with this stuff on the spot is proof that his way of thinking about music IS bebop language. Everything Barry plays sounds like the golden era of jazz, I don't really think any other players are like that -- a lot of guys still write really interesting lines etc but it's not really the same.
Look man, people don’t have any idea of how important this man and this music really are , it is all obscured by dumb wannabe “yazz” modal pianists, but you know. It takes a good ear to even understand the sonority of this music. Everything else is pretty much a farce. Long live Barry!
yes. yes. he is so fluid, just so brilliant. giant heart. giant ears. the people in the room are glowing to be near him. one guy says "Opa", which is German for 'grandfather' and a term of great respect the way it is used here. I can listen to this endlessly. his magnificence is that he brings each line around and RESOLVES into a brilliant connection to the changes.
I was there and I remember that moment very well! Our minds were all blown by his inventions. At the end of the week we'd say "and remember when Barry took this super long solo on the blues, it was so good!". I have an audio recording of it on my phone. Nice to see it again! Especially now that he's not with us anymore. I guess he finally went back to where he wanted to stay, as he says in his song "sometimes today seems like yesterday, that's where I long to stay, if only for a day..."
Barry is a national and international treasure! One of the greatest blues men and a be bop blues man too. Is Barry playing a transcription of Charlie Parker... or from memory a Bird solo, or simply improvising on a Blues head ( likely of Bird)?? Barry is unparalled except by Bird himself

Don't be jealous. That is a sin.

Well look up the whole sixth diminished thing it's pretty easy to implement tbh. Really changed the way I think of chords
I could listen to him play all day long !! His idea's never run dry. Constantly adding sugar and spice & evening nice !!
Those blues lines are lightyears ahead of anyone else still.
If you go listen to mehldau play Cheryl there are a lot of similarities. Wonder where he got the ideas!?!?
@@danielthompson5356 ???last sentence is a red flag. Don't @ me
The goat himself his blues runs are so clean
4:28, that drummer is right there with him.
Listening to this with your eyes closed is mad funny too 😁🔥
I don't know what's bigger on this great man, his heart or his giant musical gift.
Over 10 minutes and he never repeats himself!
The attention and "in-ness" goin on in this room is viiiibin' man. Everyone's just hanging for the language.
Bro it's amazing. I could not stop smiling because of that.. they were "all-in"
this man is from another planet

That piano is so lucky to be played by such fingers
This blues is savage.

His own devised solo from a horn class he taught I think. I still can’t find it though.
Wish I could apprentice myself to this guy like Yoda to Skywalker
Rare people exist

Which blues head is he playing in the beginning?
It is called Passport by Charlie Parker, but not the well-known head the other version: ruclips.net/video/0FPv5OWxck8/видео.html
Alec Katz thanks!
8:21 he was done playing but the man with the hat started talking bebop so Barry had to respond lol

Sounds like frazier lol
"what you doing, man?" shuuuuuuutcho ass up, ee ee aawin and dee daawin all over the place. LET THE MAN PLAY!
I'm annoyed by his arrogance and his singing. Just keep it in your head. That mumbling sounds awful.
that's how he learned to and he probably wouldn't play the same without vocalizing. budd powell, keither jarret, and other greats all do it too.
I am not annoyed, but ok.
Tf? Shut up
I am annoyed by your arrogance and your comment. Keep that shit in your head.
