Jason Statham worked in the Yarmouth market with his dad long ago. I am ashamed to say I lived in Gorleston for 20 years and worked in Yarmouth, and this is all very new to me, shocking to admit. I worked for a while in the parks and gardens in the 70s.
Yarmouth market chips are the best in the world and nobody can change my mind
agree
My dad's family lived in gt Yarmouth so spent most my childhood there I also lived there for 2 years I went to greenaches school by the pleasure Beach, my nan lived in a flat by the key opposite the pub the clipper schooner, I no nearly every inch of Yarmouth but as a child didn't appreciate the history of the town , I remember all those walls when I got off the bus from school I had to walk under one of the tunnels that took me to friars Lane a great place in its day .
Really love your style. You are so passionate about Great Yarmouth. It must have played a big part of your personal history. Love delving into your little works of art from a year ago, and seeing how you are so confident. Thanks for sharing your family with me. I am in my 70’s and broke my back 4 years ago and rarely get out. Thank you Tim😊
Oh wow, had no idea that Great Yarmouth had so much history. As a kid used to holiday every year in Hemsby and would always come and just walk along the seafront. Thank you for sharing xx
Yiu are welcome linda, yes more than I shared too
It is there just have to find it on marine parade i just look up and see all the buildimgs that have not been faced over by arcades etc
I moved to Scotland from Norfolk in 2007, watching this video reminded me what a jewel Great Yarmouth is, it was always a favourite place to visit when the kids were small.
I also lived in Gorleston and moved to Scotland 35 years ago.
Such a pleasure. Thank you for taking us along with you on your walk😊
Thanks for watching
Lots of tips for my second adventure in Great Yarmouth. The town within a town. There are areas like Salisbury and Marlborough combined with York and Birmingham. Then the centre of industrial wealth that crash into the sea side. Finally a front with all the worst and best of the so called traditional resort. Roller coasters and fun fare with this massive beach. Something for everyone.
The Victorian vision has been bruised by generations but like the town walls it will be still appreciated by the holiday crowds including me.
Thanks, Trevor yes I cant believe this was voted last 4th worst
My mum used to clean at the Oliver twist pub, it's a lovely little pub. I do love my old town, just a shame it's run down in places.
yes its like most seaside towns. but much better than blackpool
Not to mention its ridiculously easy to walk from the seafront to the quay, all while seeing a good few of the sights
yes agree
I feel so educated and informed. Never knew it had so much more to it. Thank you
lol
Loved this video. Totally homesick for my county as a result even though I left 30+ years ago.
wow where do you live now
Those old walls are fascinating. Usually they are made of brick or blocks of stone but those seem to be a combo of brick and small rocks. Thanks for the tour, I appreciate history.
Nice one. Time marches on but Yarmouth's history is one of those well-kept secrets. As I understand it, Lydia Eva only fished for a few years after being built and then went off to war service at the end of the '30s. Her return & restoration in the '70s was a major event for the town culminating in her participation in a Tall Ships Festival which was quite fantastic to see.
thanks, I agree more people should know about it
Loved watching this video when we came to Great Yarmouth we always went to the historical parts to aa I love local history
Glad you enjoyed it Linda
I live in Great Yarmouth for 2 years and didn't know anything about the wall.Of course I will just follow your steps and check the wall. And it was amazing to see that the row you showed its right in front of my window
Great video. Some of the places are worth a video in themselves. My parents actually scaled the steps of Neslons monument when they were young. There was an old wives tale that the architect who put it up meant it to look out to sea and when he realised it was pointing inland, he threw himself off 😆. Total rubbish of course as it faces Burnham Thorpe where Nelson was born. Opposite the monument, there used to be a racecourse and an airfield used during WW1. Under Sainsburys car park are the plague pits where victims were buried. So much to see. Thanks.
yes I know that's a scary thought about sainsburys
Thanks for the walk as I and my family stayed in Great Yarmouth, Caister in 95, brought back lots of fond memories from your walk
you are welcome
Welp, you brought the town to life. So many details I didn't know about this town.
Hi. Love your walks videos. Just to mention the toll house dates back much further back than 200 years, as The Tolhouse (also the Tolhouse Gaol) is a 12th-century building in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England. So it's much much older (1101 - 1200). So in places Great Yarmouth is far much older than perhaps first thought, love the history of our country no wonder so many people from other parts of the world love to visit, if only we here appreciated what we have here. Thank you 👍👏
agree love the history of the seaside
I went to great with my family and did a few food reviews down there gutted i didn't see this before i went its steeped in so much interesting history thanks tim
Hello there. I’ve watched a few of you vids and have subscribed, they’re very good. I spent all summer of 1982 fixing video games and one armed bandits in arcades in Yarmouth, I nearly bought a place there. I recognise most of the town including the walls and the old buildings. You only need to walk along the beach a mile to the north to be in wild dunes. Lovely to see it again, it was the last place I lived in the UK I moved to France in Oct 82. Thanks again.
You are very welcome thanks so much for watching
Just returned from Hospital. Just watching your vlog on TV mysteries of Great Yarmouth reminds me of Tewksbury/ Shrewsbury the history of the fascinating buildings well done Tim👍
Thanks John , hope all is well
@@WalkWithMeTim Thanks Tim difficult I’m coping tho
Thinking of you John 🙏
@@hazelmanship7516 Thank you
Thank you for this. Next time I'm in Great Yarmouth, I'll explore the town more than just heading for the beach.
This was every bit as good as I knew it would be Tim. You did such a great job. Loved it. More please of these places. 👏🏻
Thanks Melissa
off to yarmouth on monday for 1st time since a broads river trip as a teen - now in my middle age youve shown some great places to see - thanks
I haven’t watched it all yet but I know this is going to be great. Love Great Yarmouth. One of my favorite places you show us 👏🏻Thanks Tim
Thanks Melissa
Rewatching this as we are heading to Hemsby next week, going to spend a day visiting the sites in this and learning the local history. Thank you Tim
You are welcome Nathan
Thanks Tim for the Yarmouth vlog, loved it,we've seen parts of the wall, didn't know how far it went, awesome. Looking forward to Sundays, and Gabys next one, stay cool 😎 x
Glad you enjoyed it Hazel
My home town. My parents still live in the Town. The "old Market" was built around 1990, before that it had no canopy, you can see what it looked like on the video, with the picture from cica 1970. During the summer in the 70's & 80's the market on Friday's & Saturday's would cover all the area of the new market, right up to outside the Fisherman's Hospital. Nelson's Monument was open to the public during the summer in the 1980's, I remember going up it in the mid 80's. It was a bloody lot of Stairs and very narrow.
yes very narrow
I’ve been going to Great Yarmouth twice a year for 32 years and I’ve never known about the little ally way of shops! I’ll check it out next time!
Great video Tim. It's really interesting how much history there is there. We definitely need to do the wall walk next time we are over there.
Definitely jojo
A great video of The OTHER Side Of Great Yarmouth Tour!.👍👍👍👍👍👍
:-)
Good old Yarmouth lovely people go at least evey year and have been to visit the south side of the town
Just stumbled on this channel last week, and im loving the videos! I enjoy the fact you check out less well known areas in the uk, especially the likes of pontins etc, was really cool to see this!
Welcome aboard! hope u subbed too :-)
Hi Tim lovely to see such a lot of history. So sad to see the beautiful buildings empty. Thank you for the video thoroughly enjoyed it.
Glad you enjoyed it Tracy , hope you are well
@@WalkWithMeTim I’m good thx Tim just back from Tenerife so playing catch up lol.
A very enjoyable tour. Good to see the inside of the Town Hall.
You're welcome thanks for watching
Excited!!!
lol
YO TIM! 1. I friggin love your videos. The wife and I have been watching them fo a while now. 2. You are doing great work production wise. Especially since you are doing it all yourself or a small team I assume. Your production value is fantastic. 3. This new and more historical take on this particular video is GREAT. It really makes me want to get on a plane to visit these places. 4. Keep up the awesome work. It is great seeing these places that we non British people never really get to see. Your videos make me want to explore a much larger part of the UK!
Keep up the awesome job man. Drinks are on me and the wife if you ever make it over to NYC. What you are doing is great and I hope that you become super successful.
wow, its comments like yours that keep me going thanks .. and yes its just me :-)
Great vlog as always Tim, don't worry I have been watching all your amazing videos, I think for around 2 years now. I did watch the first tour of the famous Wall. Hope you and the family are well, keep up the great work that you do. Best wishes Joey B 👏👏👍
Legend! thank joey B
Very interesting. I'm amazed to see so many little shops. Our town is absolutely dead these days dispite many tourists, I supose no one has much spare cash after paying English heritage £30 to access Stonehenge or £10 to see the cathederal. Another factor maybe that people only come here as part of a tour for the morning or afternoon before heading to Bath or elsewhere. It just goes to show how places thrive better when the money stays in the community.
You cannot beat the market chips! They're the best chips I've ever had 😂 my friend owns ghq barbers down regent Street x
Yes they are the best
Should do a walking tour along the jurassic coast its beautiful, Explore history of Exeter and do tour of Exmouth,Dawlish,Teignmouth, torquay and Paignton along to coast where you can get train that takes you along the whole coast line
Yes I'm going to
@@WalkWithMeTim I live in Exeter so if you need any tips or help let me know
ive lived here for years and some of this stuff ive never seen before, so much more to great yarmouth than i thought
yep loads ...
Hello Tim,what a brilliant tour round Great Yarmouth, such a shame there are some shops closed,I do like the historical buildings.
yes I know
We was in great Yarmouth Saturday . It's still a great favourite of mine . Took a trip on the big wheel . Next time I'm in Yarmouth I will visit these off the track places . Great video
thanks Brian
Tbh the new market just looks like a giant wooden barn in middle of the street. Looks so strange on outside, nice on inside, walking out the regular shops to a giant barn blocking the view lol
Their are some nice areas to stroll to away from the seaside area.
I really enjoyed this., My Wife and I were at GY last year and had an excellent time but we certainly missed some of the features you pointed out. Thanks for the informative video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Fascinating and well produced as always. I've become a fan of your channel. Great Yarmouth is the only place where I have ever suffered from sunstroke, in the ridiculously hot summer of 1976!
thanks Lorraine
I love Yarmouth, came there in May and coming back in September but unfortunately our favourite ever coffee shop Westwick closed down in May, going to miss it soo much, they did the best food and hot drinks. I can remember the outdoor market back in the day, it was on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday I believe and it was always busy
yes the market used to be so busy
Thanks Tim great video. I have been Yarmouth for many years and where you have just took me will be watching for more of your videos thanks again Tim Yvonne 😊
Glad you enjoyed it
Great to see the new market being built.
Just a shame about the loss of Brewers, absolutely gutted, R.I.P. to some of the most fantastic chips I've ever tasted in my life, many happy memories of eating them whenever I went down to visit my Grandparents in Gorleston-on-Sea. R.I.P. Brewers, 1902 - 2022.
Such a fascinating walk and I didn't realise Great Yarmouth had so many interesting places to see. Only ever been to the seafront, so missed out on all this.
next time Wendy you should
I don't think i've been to Great Yarmouth since i was a child, definitely need to get back there
you should
Going great Yarmouth for the first time, my friend and I are having a holiday there,it looks very interesting, we are looking forward to it. 👍👍👍💯💯💯
hope you have fun
Grew up in GY. People slate it but there’s something I love about the place. Love going back to visit family and to show my kids where I grew up
Agree
Catching up on some of your walks from my hols. Love this one. The concrete sofa reminded me of my Ramsgate. There's a concrete did and chairs in the courtyard at the back of the Corby Tea Rooms. They've been there as long as I can remember. Xx
:-) thanks Linda
HI Tim! Been watching your video's for quite a while and always enjoy your walks around Great Yarmouth. I live about 5 mins from the Minster! I've lived here 40 years and you've shown places I didn't know existed, so it will be great to check them out!
what ... how did you not know lol
another brilliant vid find more about yarmouth every time it will always be my favorite place not to keen on the look of the new market place but i was like that when hemsby hol camp changed ended up loving it thanks tim x
Hey Ali, yes I'm sure people will grow to love it maybe
Great video. Great Yarmouth and other places nearby used be our "go to" holiday destination when I was a boy. Never knew all that history. I have avoided it because of the "Golden Mile" inference but may put on the list to visit.
you should
I love your video's Tim. I live on the south coast which also has a lot of history, Lewes has a town wall so does Southampton. We have been to Great Yarmouth but missed all you are filming sadly
Yarmouth is a town utterly soaked in incredible history but sadly a combination of bad management by the town council, terrible transport links and the willingness of local businesses to market the place as a rock bottom price destination for pissed up caravan holidays all of that is overshadowed by its sad (but in some ways deserved) reputation as a neglected seaside doss hole with little to offer 'real' tourists.
it has loads of history that is not advertised enough
@@WalkWithMeTim Kings Lynn is much the same. Hanseatic League trading port, once a major seaport with an incredible history, George Vancouver was born there and all they remember him with is a grotty soulless shopping centre bearing his name.
Great video Tim and always lovely to see my home town. Sad to see the star hotel and quay hope they do something with it soon.
You and me both!
Nice vid Tim I was born and bred in Great Yarmouth the town has a lot of history and is a very interesting place to search up on ,One thing you mentioned was it having over 100 Pubs where as I am pretty sure there was a different Pub for every day of the year meaning there was over 365 in the late 19th Century. Another old Yarmouth saying was there was a Pub on every street corner, There is a website about all the pubs that were in Yarmouth well worth searching up,
yes I did a video on every pub in yarmouth you should check it out
Hi Tim absolutely belta vlog I loved my times on holiday in Great Yarmouth not been for few years now , wowwww the market I remember those chips they were really nice good price to , I did see some of those historical walls in your video and did visit Nelson's colom that statue well actually stubbled across it very interesting must say , didn't know about the small pub Oliver twist , take care 👍
I’ve also been going to GTY for about 30 years and haven’t seen much of the wall, I do remember a stretch of it under the market gates shopping centre where the toilets are
Really enjoyed that and took my mind off London’s hot night that I can’t sleep in! Missing the seaside tonight big time 👍
oh yes nature's air-con
Loved this thanks had many holidays in Yarmouth and learnt a lot thankyou subscribed well done
Love the video Tim lot of history in Yarmouth love the place been coming down 45 years now and many more I hope
:-)
great video Tim seen some of Yarmouth history but now will have to take a look at the rest of it next time I am there
You should mick there's more than I covered too
Nelson’s column with Britannia on top pointing to Burnham Thorpe North Norfolk,Nelson’s birthplace.
Another great video Tim.Really interesting history thankyou 😁😁😘😘
thanks sue
Very well put together I enjoyed the experience and I live in Gorleston, thanks for sharing
Awesome, thank you!
Loving the video this evening. Interesting stuff love to hear about history in towns and cities where I live in Chelmsford we have history about Guglielmo Marconi.
Yes great idea scully
Just brilliant. What an insight. Thank you
wow that's a comment!
Be there in July can't wait! Love your tours very informative and interesting.
Thanks malcolm means alot
i’m going in july too! 23rd
We had been coming to Great Yarmouth for years and knew about some of the wall near the toilets neat the market but didn't know about the rest of it until about 2 years ago when went to the time and tide museum. We were meant to ge going to Norwich Castle, but itvwas closed so we went to the Time and Tide museum instead. Very interesting place to visit.
agree Sarah
And i thought that was just another brick wall lol, learned something today. Thanks Tim for another fantastic walk.
Glad you enjoyed it mark
You started at St Nicholas church and missed the wall behind it and the tower, maybe also you could do a walk around of the churchyard (there are 3 parts) which is huge. Great video ty for sharing x
hoping to visit my boyfriends aunts in great yarmouth again soon!
:-)
Concrete Couch sounds even better😉
lol
That was enjoyable Tim, thank you.
Thanks for the comment Brian
Lived here since 2013 never even realised the cottages were there. Definitely going to have to have a look.
you should
I grew up in gorleston just outside Yarmouth . Lovely place lovely people !
agree
Great video timnice things to here about great Yarmouth a lot of history
Indeed fiona
I knew about most of this, except for the sofa! I went up Nelson’s Monument in 2011, was a pretty amazing view from the top.
lol well yep the famous Great Yarmouth Sofa
Had no idea about the wall and I've been visiting the area since the late 70s. Great video, thanks.
Glad to help :-)
Well done Tim.. you have shown Gt Yarmouth is more than just 'kiss me quick' hats, amusements and sticks of rock!!! A very informative tour. Thankyou ❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very interesting thanks, have lived in Yarmouth most of my life and even I have learned something new❤️👍🏻
see I told people about the wall and they said ...what wall
We stay at Vauxhall Holiday Park and it's a decent walk into Yarmouth
.another great vid mate..♥️👍💥
thanks .. yes great holiday park
Great video Tim so much history did not know great Yarmouth had a wall going around glad you showed us I liked the little pub Oliver twist
its very cute
I agree with you it did look cute
Had su great holidays there su great memories
Ive been to the time & tide museum, it was ages ago though, still it was good.
I never knew that Yarmouth had a wall or a Nelsons monument. Cool
wow you didn't .. you do now :-)
Great Vid Tim really interesting I went down the rows once and never realised they went all the way to Haven Bridge
Yes a long way lol
Apparently the builder of Nelsons Monument committed suicide because it was built the wrong way. Great Yarmouth is very interesting historically and we should protect it. The horrible new Wheelie bins spoil it.
I heard that I think
I heard it on Paranormal database
@@WalkWithMeTim A myth, the man who died was a acrobat who fell to his death while climbing from the top of the monument. the council employee in charge of construction died of a heart attack after climbing the 217 steps to the top.
Used to go there for an annual pool competition & always loved going around the town!
was that Vauxhall
@@WalkWithMeTim Yes! BUCS championship
People moan at Yarmouth. But there are few seaside towns with a complete set of town wall, a minster and loads of quaint streets to stroll about. Spent hours there whilst my parents flittered away my inheritance at the two casinos! It has lost it's charm a bit over the years but with staycations on the rise it's the best place to visit in East Norfolk. What many people miss about it is the old town and the bit just beyond the town walls towards the docks. The Yar it's self is a great walk, plus Gorleston has some history to it as well. There are some hidden bits of the walls under the Market Gates and tucked away behind houses and car parks. If you like railways there is some fantastic relics from the old station including a bow bridge.
I have been up the monument countless times a great view and worth a visit.
wow when was that
@@WalkWithMeTim In the glory days of South Denes camp...
We visited Great Yarmouth last summer, I didn't know any of this stuff was here. It's a shame people are drawn towards the main shopping street, the back streets look far more interesting.
agree
I went on the history walking tour run by the tourist board. It was so much fun.
I bet shame you don't seem it advertised anywhere
