Operation Overlord was launched on 6 June 1944 (D-Day). A 1,200-plane airborne assault preceded an amphibious assault involving more than 5,000 vessels. One of my uncles was in the first wave of US soldiers who went ashore that day. The other followed a few days later as a truck driver delivering supplies to soldiers fighting in France.

Splendid video. A remarkable bit of aviation at night. I remember the training in dead reckoning. The sergeant in the weather shop examined the entrails of a fowl and took a W.A.G. at the temperature and winds aloft, we bumbled through some trigonometry on the back side of the E6B "computer", and, mirabile dictu, always managed to find our way to the bar that evening.

Very interesting. I flew this with the A2A Misfit Squadron last night at the exact time That's All Brother took off. 2130z on June 5th. We took off from Greenham using the MJ C-47 in P3D. ORBX True Earth had enough of the airport to enable take off and landing. Outbound was 500 feet all the way with 700 feet for the drop then at 3,000 on the way back. That's all Brother did a further Two flights on June 6th, One towing a glider and the other dropping supplies.

I knew some of the old boys who worked on the Dak when I first started in this mad game, the stories they told made my time in the Gulf look like a walk in the park. Their stamina must have been phenomenal.

Thanks for the flight, as ever extremely professional.
I did essentially this route this morning, but tried to fly it in line with the real conditions, and dialled in a few failures too to take effect over the landing zone.
It was harrowing, and that’s when you know it’s a simulation and know the failures are coming…

Excellent video to tribute the pilots who flew this day. My Grandpa flew B-17's in the 8th Army Air Force 452nd Bomber Group. While he wasn't involved in D-Day he flew several missions over Germany '44-'45 and earned his purple heart by catching some flak shrapnel early in 1945. Hopefully someday A2A makes their B-17 again as I'd like to recreate some of the missions he flew from the logs he left behind. He passed about 15 years ago and I wish I was old enough then to fully grasp the stories he told about the war.

My dad was a FAC onboard a C-47 in Korea, his plane crashed the last day of the war killing the pilot. My step-dad's favorite plane to fly was the C-47.
Actor Tom Poston of "Bob Newhart" fame flew airborne troops during D-Day and subsequent missions. The one time I got to fly a LINK it was based on a C-47 flight model.
    Love the Gooney.

Thank you for posting such a fitting tribute in memory of those who gave their lives on this day 80 years ago. My Father was at D-Day with the 1st North Northamptonshire Yeomanry. He was in Tanks. His tank was hit & he was the only survivor. Dad’s not with us anymore but I am so proud of him. This is just brilliant as all the services gave their all to liberate us all from that tyranny. Thank you once again.

Excellent introduction to the WW2 DC 3
This is actually better than Microsoft DC-3 and close to PMDG quality of the DC-6
Unfortunately PMDG abandoned X Plane in favor of MSFS
They made one plane for X plane (DC6)

Why as a brit did you not do the light infantry in the gliders the first to land on the evening of the 5th or 8 para that was the first to drop on that same evening and after it’s main task of destroying guns on the cliff to the north of the landing site and then for weeks holding the high ground above the main landing ground. Pegasus bridge where the Oxford and Buckingham light infantry landed one team had to take a 2cm a s cannon to shot and take out an other aa gun on top of the near by hospital with out killing any of the pregnant woman on the maternity word with complete
    success.
