More truth, thanks Rob. Every turbo I've replaced, when I went to clean out the intercooler , water and solvent cleaner poured out. Turn in the stock one to a semi truck cooler/radiator shop, and ask for high pressure/flow exchanger to be tigged to your stock sides/ mounts.
Independent Radiator in Albuquerque did mine, gotta shout out.

Calgarian here. Made me a boost leak tester from Home Depot for super cheap, used soapy water, and found a hole in the bottom of my intercooler, and leaking from the intake plenum to the head. They all leak!

I tig a lot of pressure vessles. I have a large box full of collars, fittings and plugs for pressure testing my welds. No matter how great or famous welder you are, presure testing is humbling, but you know it is good when you have it sealed up. I also have done a few two stroke dirt bike pipes with dents in them. I copied the commercial tester. These are a little scary to do. Great vid sir. SUBED.

I made me a boost leak tester at the ace hardware store for like $10 in parts. You want to regulate the shop pressure down, lol don't go putting 120psi shop pressure in, you'll deff have leaks then! Haha. Start with 10 psi like rob said and go up slowly. Max around 40.
Every truck I've put my tester on I've never had one that didn't leak. They all leak some! Especially old ones! First gen's are 30 sumthin years old! They rode
Like covered wagons and vibrate at a constantly!
The best thing you can do is regularly check for boost leaks every time you change fuel filters or at least once a year! The best thing to do is upgrade to the nice thick heavy duty silicone intercooler boots and stainless steel spring loaded clamps! Step up to 3.5" intercooler piping. Mishimoto moto makes a great upgraded larger higher flow intercooler. They aren't the cheapest thing, there kinda spendy, but a stock 20-30 yr old intercooler that's leaking like a civ ain't doing no good.
You can always try to take your leaking CAC (charge air cooler for proper terminology) to a radiator shop and have them take a shot at fixing it. Brazing it or soldering up the leaks. But if they are to get gone like this one in the vid, just trash em and spend the money on a better one!
For first gen's a secound gen intercooler or a 7.3l powerstroke intercooler I've read works great. Kinda weird to say...but there's a good chance an old 7.3l opiwwr stroke intercooler is gunna leak as much as an old first gen intercooler! They just get beat up being up front on a truck, rocks, road debris, vibration from the motor, road vibration, endless hot/ cold cycles. At least with a radiator you'll see and notice a coolant leak and puddle on the ground! You don't notice and can't hear a intercooler leak over the sound of the motor running, and Is often one of the most overlooked things. It's super easy and quick to test. I used to just throw it on cust vehicles that came in the shop for a LOF and 'visual inspection' and shake down. The 'check it over real good' request from a cust. It didn't hardly take any time. It's not uncommon to find multiple leaks. The intake horn gaskets on the intake manifold plenum is a common leak point. No one ever puts a new gasket on there, they always reuse it when ever they've removed the intake horn to get at the grid heater, or drill and tap for a boost sensor on the intake horn. Always use new gaskets sheesh! I see it all the time! Hose clamps over tightened and cut into the rubber boots. On secound gens on the drivers side the inner fender cuts into the rubber boot on the charge pipes. Like from the factory it touches it. And will wear and cut thru it over time. Just lightly bend the fender away from the rubber boot! I've seen holes get rubbed into and thru the alumn charge air cooler pipes before! If something's rubbing long enough on alumn it'll rub thru eventually!

I once left a 1/8" pipe plug out of a manifold on a 1000hp motor put it in and dynoed again and it was like 7hp. I expected a lot more but the turbo can actually make up for a leak pretty good unless you are just flat out of air.

👍👍.. bought an adapter kit from Fleet pride years back... it's kinda shocking the leaks a person can discover.. wether it be at pipe connections,CAC cores,or intake fittings or gaskets...on any engine or machine/ truck..they run better ,in one way or another, when leaks are remedied 👍👍👊

Hey Rob, I got an HX35 swapped into my first gen and have an issue with it leaking boost around the snap ring on compressor side, is there a way to fix that?

Pull and apart and clean it. There is a you can put in there. But most guys just put a small amount of rtv

Ever figure out what happened to that 12v that you may have hurt? The one you swapped the 6.7 p pump for?
