It's honestly crazy to think that Kyle Lowry played for six seasons before joining the Raptors. In my head he joined the NBA as a 26 year old rookie in Toronto.
I’m a Grizzlies fan and can tell you hardly anyone remembers his days in Memphis as a young backup point guard on Grizzlies teams who would usually finish with 58-60 losses per year. In his early days he was practically a no name for anyone outside of Memphis or if you went to Villanova
@Chandler Russell bust arc with Memphis you meant and as a heat fan he was honestly horrible for half the playoffs 😂 worst defense of his career not to mention his shooting 💀
@@tragically_bad221 your right but that was in the conference finals. He still played awful defense. To give an example he would do what we saw oladipo, cp3, and Russ do when a offensive player is too fast for them they would swipe at the ball and throw there hands up and the guy driving would get a free layup or dunk. Lowry would do that so many times in the playoffs instead of playing defense he would flop around them from time to time and he did that a lot against the Celtics with Marcus smart and when he had to guard brown. Terrible defense and just as bad offense 😂🤷🏾♂️
He is a perfect example for why scheme fit matters so much for players. Some busts may have that label because they were drafted by, signed by or traded to the wrong team. Lowry is a perfect example of that fact.

I will never forget his game 7 performance against Miami putting up 35 points in a near triple double, and then scoring 35 points twice against the Cavaliers the next series. His game 6 performance against the Celtics was also unbelievable in 2020.

It is impossible to understate how upset the ENTIRE raptors fanbase was over the derozan trade. The duo of him and Lowry WAS the team, it was a combination of outrage, shock, and betrayal, and we won a championship because of it. I will always respect masai ujiri for being willing to make that call, knowing full well how humongous a risk that was and that if it didn't pay off he almost certainly would have been booed out of town
Good video, but I think it needs to delve deeply into how good prime Lowry actually was. This was a guy that in 2016 was 5th in the league in RPM, in 2017 was 4th in the league in RPM, in 2018 was 1st in the league in RPM, in 2019 was 5th in the league in RPM, and in 2020 was 6th in the league in RPM. He was the consummate floor general that was dominant on both ends. He never really got the credit for how impactful he was. He knew how to control the game, manipulate defenses, stifle offenses, take over games when needed. He doesn't get credit but he's one of the greatest 3 point shooters in NBA history and will likely finish top 10 all time in 3 pointers made. Any Raptor fan will know that Lowry was the engine of the team between 2014-2021 and the primary factor of why they were a perennial 50+ win team every season. He was basically like a mini 5'11 bulldog Lebron that could do it all. I'm sure people will disagree with me but I am easily taking prime Lowry over guys like Kyrie, Lillard, Wall, and Kemba during that era. If Lowry was able to play with a guy like Kawhi for more than 1 year there is no doubt in my mind he would have won multiple championships.
I love these. Each season zooms by so fast that we only focus on the biggest stories, but some of the most interesting stuff is only accessible when you dig deep, and in this case wide, across many seasons. So many lessons to learn from this All Star, yet not really superstar. Thanks for shining light on Lowry.
@Cold Snap by one dimensional i mean his career was one dimensional. he was a highly regarded prospect that went on to live up to expectations and had a hall of fame career by the age of 29 before leaving for cincinnati. it's not a great topic for prism. he was great, achieved a lot, and everybody knows that and adored him.
One of the greatest career turnarounds in the history of the NBA.If someone had told us that Kyle Lowry would be HOF value at the end of his career, back in 2014, when he was 28 years old, we would call him crazy
I have always admire Kyle Lowry for his grit and determination despite everybody's early doubts on where he headed to in his playing career before he played for Toronto. PS: Secret Base needs to do a Zach Randolph Prism episode in the near future from his days of the Jail Blazers to his Grind-father days of the 2010s Memphis Grizzlies.

Ppl who say lowry got carried that year didnt watch that finals series man, if one superstar could just will teams to championships without a perfect system around them lebron and kd would have 10 titles, that whole raptors team was expertly built to complement kawhis strengths AND weaknesses, without gasols defence on embiid they lose to the sixers. But lowry was the heart and soul of that team and it would not have won without him, the opening minutes of game 6 are proof of the raptors following lowry not the other way around. Kawhi was ofc the best player on that team and they dont win without him, but obviously thats why they traded for him. minimizing someones impact on a championship season simply because they arent an mvp level player is silly because teams dont win without selfless all star level leaders/glue guys like kyle lowry 😁
@@percival8193 there’s no Kawhi trade without Lowry and Derozan turning the raptors into a consistent playoff team. Don't see too many players like Lowry anymore. Stronger point guards who is arguably better on the less glamorous side of the floor. Still think DeMar was always the better Raptor but Lowry encompassed the most successful era of the Raptors.
It's a coin flip, Lowry deserves all the credit for being the leader the Raptors always needed and it would have been amazing to see what the two of them could've done without having to face LeBron every year. I have a soft spot for DeMar since I don't think the last 10 years happens with Lowry or Masai if he isn't there to improve the culture and be Toronto's first star that wasn't ashamed to play for the Raptors.
As a Grizzlies fan, I’m so happy both him and Mike Conley found ways to become great. If we’d kept both it would’ve been like the Fox-Haliburton situation in Sacramento: 2 great unselfish players, but with a lot of overlapping abilities that would prevent them from reaching their full potential.

I will always respect masai ujiri for being willing to make that call, knowing full well how humongous a risk that was and that if it didn't pay off he almost certainly would have been booed out of town
This is my favourite player OF ALL TIME. Him and many other players on the raptors over the years have brought me so much joy. Thank you K Low
The reason I support the Raptors, from Australia!
Words cant describe how much i love Kyle Lowry!!
You guys gotta do one on Jose Bautista. He went from 4 trades in a single season to Blue Jays legend
Already done. Look up Beef History: Jose Bautista vs Rougned Odor.
Maybe make a prism on Ken Griffey Jr. With his injuries. Or on the 3 sluggers who cannot get away from talk of steroids, Sosa, McGwire, Bonds.
griffey is too one dimensional to be in this series. the injuries came after his place in the hall of fame was cemented.
McGuire??? How in the world do you think that is his name?!?
Bonds would definitely be a good candidate for this series
Wasn’t Ken Griffey Jr super prominent in the History of the Seattle Mariners doc?
@Cold Snap by one dimensional i mean his career was one dimensional. he was a highly regarded prospect that went on to live up to expectations and had a hall of fame career by the age of 29 before leaving for cincinnati. it's not a great topic for prism. he was great, achieved a lot, and everybody knows that and adored him.
I remember watching him with the Houston Rockets. He showed the toughness & leadership.
One of the greatest career turnarounds in the history of the NBA.If someone had told us that Kyle Lowry would be HOF value at the end of his career, back in 2014, when he was 28 years old, we would call him crazy
Seth Rosenthal is my fave producer on SB. Thats it. Thats the tweet.
The best moment in sports history in my western city was watching our whole nation rally behind our team 🇨🇦 🍁 🇨🇦
I hope we get more Seth videos by far the best narrator on SB.
Clara's up there too.
@@benjaminan1183 everyone else at SB is aight, but Seth is alone at the top. I wish he did every NBA video.
Jon Bois is far and away the best, the rest just don't compare. He's so good they forced him to carry other narrators
@@CyrogenicNation John good at the long-form stuff if you want to get nerdy with numbers. If you want to hear in the voice of the narrator that they have loved the game for more than decade, and can talk for hours about nothing but basketball the Seth is the way to go. I get more excited for an NBA video than anyother because I hope Seth is narrating because he does a better job than anyone about making you care and better understand a little blip in NBA history.
@@alexdehart6626 It's true that Jon doesn't make a lot if any NBA content (I think he only made NBA Y2K about it) and that a lot of his content are longform, but his storytelling skills are the greatest, bar none.
The rare short-form contents like the Larry Walters Pretty Good he made shows that he can delve into short-form content very nicely if he wants to, and his segment about Bob Cyclone in the Bob Emergency alone runs laps around anyone else in terms of making you care about an insignificant blip in sports history. That's not even mentioning the filmmaking skills he's got -- it makes every other SB video seem like a slideshow presentation.
YESSSSSS!!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR COVERING THIS MAN!!!
KYLE LOWRY OVER EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As a Raptors fan it was amazing seeing the change in Kyle over the years. He's one of the few players I can think of that was better in their 30's than their 20's.
It’s amazing what happens when humans get put in situations where they actually have a chance to succeed. Good on Kyle!
Kyle is really one of the most grittiest and toughest I've seen Play 👍🏿👍🏿
I love Kyle, his growth as a person and a player is incredible to see!! ❤
Its crazy what Lowry has done 🔥🔥🐐
Thank you Secret Base, brought some tears to my eyes to see this about K-Low. Truly the Greatest Raptor and so glad he was part of this wild ride.
This series has been amazing, I know the line up is probably already set but I'd love to see a Ricky Williams prism video!
As a rockets fan I always loved Kyle Lowry. I was very happy when he and Jeremy Lin won the title
Lowry has been one of my favorite PGs in the league alongside Jrue Holiday and Ricky Rubio.
He also stepped up in the 2019 Finals when his team needed him the most.
Congrats, Champ!
Man I remember them Memphis days with him, Conley, & Damon Stoudamire. Alot of bad games but those rosters had plenty potential.
I find it awesome that the first Raptor star (Mighty Mouse) was one of the players to mentor the greatest Raptor ever.
@@codyssmith73 yea that is ironic huh?
speaking of grizzlies, notice how they took several jailblazers-era players, leading them into the Grit & Grind era (z-bo, bonzi, and damon).
What doesn't kills you, makes you stronger. Glad to hear these success stories.
Thank you for posting this
Thank you for the Raptors content!
A LOT of us love Lowry here in Canada! Thank you Kyle for the great memories!
I hope you will do one of these for Jimmy Butler. He was labeled so hard in the media and lead the Heat to serious playoff contenders.
HAVENT EVEN WATCHED IT AND YOU ALREADY KNOW YA BOY BOUT TO BE IN HIS FEELINGS
He is the GROAT! Love that man! Go Raptors!
Kawhi did more in one season for them then he did his entire career
@@percival8193 Kawhi is the greatest player to play for the Raptors. But Lowry is the greatest Raptor of all time followed by Demar
Junk Yard Dawg is the goat
nahhhhh
@@percival8193 there’s no Kawhi trade without Lowry and Derozan turning the raptors into a consistent playoff team. If not for James Dolan nixing a Lowry trade at the last minute, Raptors would’ve been rebuilding. Instead, Lowry and DeMar turned the team from lottery to a consistent playoff team. The championship doesn’t happen without any of that.
It is pretty ironic that McHale preferred Goran over him and then years later, Goran got traded for Lowry.
Goran was just better, period.
Lowry also knocked Dragic out of the 2016 playoffs.
A perfect revenge.
@@Youralwayswhining4367 Maybe for that season. But Lowry has only gotten much better over time and its not even close as to who the better player is right now.
@@Youralwayswhining4367 How many championships has he won? How many all star appearances?
Thanks for making this, Kyle is my favorite player and actually got me back into basketball in my mid 20s
Always got love for K Low man. Thank you for 2019. #ForeverChamps
2019 was a helluva time to be a basketball fan.
The most underrated player in nba history
Thickest booty in the nba too got my thang like a rock
Having Derozan around all that time surely helped his case as well, seemingly come from similar situations
Crazy to see he been in the league since 06' 🤙🏿
saw kyle and booted up my computer instantly, love some raps content
He's the GROAT!
WOW Never thought we'd get this. GROAT
I'm getting emotional over a secret base video. Kyle Lowry, the greatest raptor of all time 🍁🦖
Great video. Kyle is the Goat for the Raptors. He will have his number retired. He will have a Statue outside. He may one day be the coach for the team as well. That’s how great he is.
Kyle shows that maturity and willingness to take advice from those who know better, can change your trajectory. Too few have that capability
gotta love lowry
Skill + longevity + success + mindset + charity = Greatest Raptor of All Time
Please do a Steve Smith prism. His story from juco to mid round pick to terrible teammate all the way to soon to be Hall of Fame would be awesome to dive into
Not to mention the whole sandpaper saga... wait, wrong Steve Smith.
Great series and love all this rapid content 🫡
raptors 2019 championship, the build up and what followed could be a movie. There’s a lot about that season that to this day not many people know what a roller coaster it was on and off the court
I feel like this episode could also have gone on just a little while longer, because at the very end of his first stint with the raptors (because he will be back to retire in a Toronto jersey), he got to spell out where he wanted to go, and he got to go on his terms.
Great video, we give up on people way too quick. Imagine how many other players could’ve been successful in the right scheme with the right mentors.
Thank you for this video on our GROAT
Love the new Prism series. Thank you!
I recall Knicks called off the deal because Dolan didn't want Ujiri to fleece him again after the Bargnani trade.
Thanks for this. I totally forgot about Kyle Lowry before the success, before the championship. This is great work!
Crazy he was on the Rockets team that almost knocked Kobe out of the playoffs in 2009.
Kobe got lucky that year.. no T-Mac or Yao…
@@JLS-vv6ye Yao played
@@Kirbystare1992 he played up to game 3 before he broke his foot 🦶but no tmac
Seth, longtime fan here. Just wanted to check in on you. I can’t imagine the depression a knicks fan would have doing research rehashing this point, and the actual video for this one. It’s understandable, I had it when you guys decided to unload the Vince retrospective on me. Hoping Secret Base’s benefit plan includes some counselling.❤
Sincerely
A big Raptors/Seth Fan
Kyle Lowry is truly the G.R.O.A.T!!!
Bruh
Vince?
Demar?
Kawhi?
Kyle Lowry is easily in the top 2 players in Raptors history.
The greatest Raptor ever! Thanks for that chip K Low! #WeTheNorth 💙💙
Going straight to that game of zone raptors episode after this video
Learn from your failures, be challenged by those that can appreciate you but not always agree with you. It's necessary to succeed. A hard lesson to learn but necessary. Glad he got there and did it for The North.
35 million people rallying for the love of the raps 🇨🇦 🍁 🇨🇦 WE THE NORTH
This title means so much to Canada and Toronto
Great video and narration, but I feel like you could've talked more about his championship season as well as the later years of his time in Toronto.
This is a damn good episode about realignment & sacrifice.
absolute legend. thanks for making this
Just another example of how getting someone to believe in you can change your life. Once Kyle had someone who believed in him, he reciprocated that 10 fold. Simple as that!
YESSS I'm a Raps fan and Kyle Lowry is my favorite player of all time. I'm so excited to watch this haha
That is EXACTLY why I don’t wanna write off rookies and young until their ~3rd contract. Change of scenery, coaches, team mates, teams, owners/GM’s all might have an impact
This is quite a surprise to profile Kyle Lowry
7:48 "foreshortened"
good word choice
I don’t know what series this would fit into, but please do a video on “Mysterious” Fredrick Mitchell Walker, the absolute force of nature. Three sport coach and athlete at the college level. Played football and baseball at the pro level... more people must know of this man!!!
A video about my favourite player, it must be Christmas!
Lowry will always be remembered for me as a Canadian.
