  • Today marks 79 years (The 8th of May, 1945) since the end of World War II, one of the most extensive and destructive conflicts in human history.
"Le Chant des Partisans" (Song of the Partisans) is one of the most emblematic songs of the French Resistance during World War II. The lyrics were written by Maurice Druon and Joseph Kessel in 1943 while they were in London. The music was composed by Anna Marly, a Russian émigré also living in London.
This song was created as an alternative to the French national anthem, "La Marseillaise," which some perceived as compromised due to the collaborationist Vichy regime. "Le Chant des Partisans" was meant to inspire and unite French partisans fighting against Nazi occupation. The song calls for resistance and acknowledges the sacrifices made in the name of freedom.
"Le Chant des Partisans" quickly spread among members of the Resistance in France due to its motivating and inspirational power. It was performed at meetings, in secret gatherings, and was passed on orally. The song became a symbol of the courage and struggle of the French people against oppression and occupation.
