Marphy, that's the Cyberdemon. That strategy wasn't intended for use against Revenants, you'll get John Romero to reach out from your monitor to choke you to death, trying stuff like that.
Great video! I loved how you explained the melee-baiting technique against fighting a single revenant up close; and how the revenant still *OWES* you a reaction rocket, even after a few punches. That's probably the best wording that I can think of to describe the situation and it's really important to realize that - even *after* baiting the revenant a few times, it will still rocket you, unless it's dead! Also, here's an extra revenant challenge for you: change the six-revenant-wide hallway to have *FENCES* instead of walls, so all the rockets home in on you and never crash into the walls, but your movement is still greatly restricted. Good luck! :)
Best part is that our community is actually more robust today than it was 5-10 years ago. Due to excellent ports, a great new series, and "Doom Tubers" there are more people making WADs and playing Doom again than we've had in a long time.
Fun fact for you, Peter: EVERY enemy with a melee state different from its missile state does this. DeHackEd monsters, imps in Doom 64, DECORATE entities...
I would hesitate to say old-school Doom content is going through a renaissance, simply because people have been contributing to the larger doom community for years, but renaissance is the best way to describe all the great new creators coming out to pick apart this game that just keeps giving.
I love the idea of How to Doom as a series, and this video is a great first entry. Really looking forward to future videos; you've earned yourself a subscriber.
This is the first video I've seen from your channel-- as it stands now, this video has a criminally-small 56 likes, 361 views, so I assumed that, based on the quality and confidence of the video, I've just caught it early. I cruised over to your channel in order to find more How to Doom videos, only to find that this was your *first fraggin' one*, and I'm just blown away. Please do more (especially one on hitscan enemies, such as the Wolfenstein SS trooper, which nobody really talks about)!!
Wow... I've been playing Doom for almost as long as Doom is old (about 1995), and I didn't understand too much of this until recently, but your video....spot on. I get it now. Thanks so much - you've earned yourself a subscriber.
That bit about Revs exerting huge priority on any situation they appear in and essentially making the encounter about their presence (similar to how archviles and pain elementals do) is hugely valuable, not just for people learning to fight revenants but people looking to design encounters featuring them. As a mapper, I would absolutely love to see more deep analysis along those lines for every other creature and how they interact, influence, or especially limit encounters when found in various configurations and geometries. While it's not possible to account for literally everything you can do with any combination of chess pieces and chessboards, a sort of body of theory built on how the past few decades of mapping have developed encounter design (and how individual mappers have made recognizable signatures out of their combat design) would be real useful for advancing the exploration of that space, and interesting besides. Not to steer your channel, whatever you put out is gonna kick ass, but you definitely have the analytical chops for stuff like that.
This is a very insightful comment. It's super interesting how a sort of "meta" has developed within encounter design. Like everyone recognizes a good set of area-denial arch-viles now-and probably has their own preferences for managing/eliminating them. I have an idea for a series I'm looking to test within the coming weeks. And I think that could be a great place to explore these concepts (when the opportunity arises). But I don't want to promise much or give anything away yet! Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts.
huhuhu... what an mess Great video. Love the revelation that 1 revenant = 2.5 imps. Also made me realise there's little in the way of well-edited combat tutorials on RUclips, the only one I've ever linked people is the one I referenced above lol
It would be cool if you released the map(s) you made for this video, like the long hallway of revenants, the cyberdemon room etc. I could see it being a Meowgi-esque training hub where if you can UV-max it without taking damage you've effectively mastered Revenant fighting. Just a thought
I've been playing Doom so much and yet videos like this taught me more random facts, even strategies (which some of them do unconsciously and others I fail to)
No, they have a flaw: their tracers explode with the same sound as rockets. That can be misleading in intense fights. As a GZDoom player, I have an out with a quick SNDINFO mod and a different sound effect, but vanilla/Boom players are outta luck.
It feels great to watch a video that not only gives you new knowledge, but also reinforces some of the things you were already doing. Thanks for making things so explicit in this tutorial, especially with the narrow hallway.
We need more "How to Doom"! I just found your channel and the HtD: Monster Prioritization video, and I need more. That top-down explanation with all the revs and rockets was really helpful.
This video was full of "Hey, I do that"s but also "Hey, that's smart"s. Sometimes you just stress out so much with revenants around that you just stop thinking, so these strats will need to be in muscle memory before you can consistently apply them. Nonetheless, great educational video. Hopefully decino sees it before attempting Italo Doom MAP03... (if you know you know)
I've played a lot of megawads, and I've gotten...quite familliar with Revenants. However, I'd never quite realized the trick to dispatching rockets on a flat wall until you laid it out like that. Thanks for that.
What a nice video. I almost feel like this is a leaked tutorial video from a seasoned instructor at UAC, who has done (and survived) multiple missions raiding Hell, and is now training the new recruits :)
Excellent job breaking down the strategies and mechanics behind everyone's favorite spooky skeleton. Your delivery in this video is excellent and I'm glad to see your fan base starting to grow. Good classic Doom content is just not as prevalent as many of us would like, besides decino, ZeroMaster, Civvie(TNT when), and a few others. It's hard to find fresh, fun, interesting content on Doom. I'm going to continue putting in requests for breakdowns if you keep this up. +1 for Sunlust Map 30 God Machine. Both the Cathedral and the infamous final room +1 for any part of SWTW (could be its own series and simultaneously it's own masterclass on level design) Thanks SB
What you described about revenants overruling enemy presence is what I like to call "suppression factor". The bonies' is some of the highest, followed by Arch-viles since they have a short max range that skelebois don't, and behind Pain Elementals since they're movement restrictors in a game all about movement, and Cyberdemons in high spots because of chip-away from blast damage.
The Plutonia Survival Guide This is sick stuff. I never knew that there was a clear difference between the charge sequence and the punch sequence. No wonder I've been getting rocketed to the face despite shooting them at nearly point blank. Great vid! Hoping to see more vids on this kind of stuff. (Kinda hoping to see a vid on cacodemons soon. They're a lot more annoying than they look lol)
YOU ARE THE john Madden of doom !!!! I really hope this turns into a series ! As much as I like decino videos I am always welcome to more how to’s like THIS video. Great work , subbed !
3:41 - I can’t remember what the value is called, I remember DeHacked calling this “enemies attack right back” and I think it’s only applied to certain enemies. There’s pretty much a check done to see if they *immediately* retaliate to being attacked. Revs are definitely the most obvious example, but most tougher enemies have a likelihood of instant clap backs. The John Madden-esque play-by-play at 7:35 is so damn useful too. This is the first video to teach me more about fighting the revs effectively since RottKing’s “pro Doom strats” vid that’s ancient by now. I’m gonna attempt to put this knowledge into practice. Finally this is well produced and easy to follow, and the jokes were funny and charming without being OTT. Keep up the fine work!
That RottKing video is a classic-definitive proof that Goku wins vs. literally infinite pinkies. Thank you for the info (where were you two days ago??) and your very generous compliments!
Yeah, I love to see those like American football diagrams but used for Doom's strategies! Until now, I have only watched videos of Doom's strategy against a single enemy, based on their weaknesses, but not against a whole group of monsters.
Because the proper way to deal with revenants is one of the first bits of advice you find when you're stepping up your Doom game, I'm surprised to get so much helpful advice from this video. You've really ascended immediately to first rate with your Doom analysis videos! I don't want to start calling out names about who didn't tell me what in their analysis video, what Doomtubers don't seem to know what in their gameplay videos, etc., but even some very advanced Doom players I've watched don't seem to have this information down. I can't get enough of this stuff. (I suspect your national culture will prevent you from feeling like you're ever done apologizing to decino.)
Thank you! Yeah, no one knows everything, and I'm sure I'm missing some information in this video too-even beyond admitting to having no idea why revenants sometimes don't retaliate. I'm constantly learning new things from other Doomtubers, and I'm happy to be able to contribute what little I can! (And a good apology is a lifelong commitment. Every Canadian knows that!)

It does not surpass Decino's video. It's not worse either. It has a different emphasis and thus are nice companion videos that go well together. Decino is talking purely about the specs of revenants and how their missiles work. Going into the code and game mechanics. sobad on the other hand is making a how to deal with revenants in game video. Sure there is tech talk here too but it's used in a totally different way. The best thing would be to first watch Decino's revenant videos to learn all about them, then watch this video to learn how you can use all your knowledge about revenants to beat them in game.
@@the8thark everyone has a different opinion my friend. While both teach you a great deal, I think that decino's analysis speaks more to me as I am more numbers and code-oriented. I watched both videos you mentioned the day they came out. What "is best" is not the same for each person. You and I both enjoy Doom and that is that.
Fantastic great amazing. I really like your balance between info and quick snappy jokes here and there, I dig that kinda levity. I also appreciate you using shotgun shells to demonstrate rockets lmao Hope you'll make more guides, I'll watch them all!
i love your delivery, clip editing, and writing style! the varied visual aids make this a very complete presentation, i showed to to my less savvy friend and they came away with a feeling of "oooh that's how that works!" im happy to subscribe to another doom creator, you're great.
Dude, what a slick video, dig the Streets of Rage tracks, what a comfy vibe, haha! Revenants were a demon that gave me a ton of trouble when I first started getting stuck into custom Doom content, particularly on maps with super close-range encounters and slaughter / slaughter-lite maps. Had no idea about the "retaliation rocket", this game truly is the gift that keeps on giving! Very much looking forward to seeing more classic Doom deep-dives, playthru's and analysis, can't get enough of it! Here's hoping your channel and content blows up, I know it most certainly will within the classic Doom community! :)
This has been the guide I never knew I needed. I've been playing Doom 2 since I was knee-high to a shotgun (weirdly enough I only played Doom 1 AFTER I completed Doom 2). And maybe it's because of that (i.e. playing when I was just a kid), I never learned the minute intricacies of enemy behaviour. And because I didn't know about the quirks in the enemy attacks, I didn't or how to exploit them by doing the various dances. Oh, I've seen Decino and others do the dances before against Mancubi, Cyberdemons and yes, Revenants, but its one thing to know they exist and another to have the knowledge to perform them. The only one I can actually do myself is safely punching Pinkies with Berserk, probably the easiest one to learn. (Is dodging Lost Souls to shoot them as they slowly turn around considered a dance?) Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that this video has made Revenants far less scary, so thank you!
Amazing. If there is one thing that this community needed is a good "how to doom" doomtuber, and from the three videos of you i watched, you do it fantastically. I hope you will get more traffic because you deserve it. (btw, as a keyboard player, unfortunately some of the tactics here are harder for us to pool out)
I loved the idea of this video, I hope you make more with the other enemies. And it could be interesting to analyze combinations of monsters, like in Plutonia with Chaingunners+Revenants. Or a typical one: Archviles+Demons/Spectres.
Alright yep, this is some good quality content. Well edited video on an interesting topic with a good voice over and the occasional chuckle-worthy joke. Thanks, I really enjoyed my time. I've checked the rest of your channel and all I can say is that you're hilarious but also knowledgeable on the topic of Doom, can sing and swear like a sailor and, despite not wanting to go huge on RUclips, can foster a nice little community. Have a sub, my friend. Add: Gotta say I also love your voice and mannerisms, along with the hearty laugh. Can't watch a video of yours and not leave in a better mood. Oh and despite doing this for just 4 months, the scripting and editing is really good, with the rare segment dragging on for slightly too long (The damn revenant tunnel). And the whole channel is so neatly organized with playlists, always a bonus.
Oh man, this video has been so helpful, and I've been wishing for this kind of video for quite a while now. I look forward to the future videos in this series!
Really cool video man. I've been playing Doom for a while and I didn't know about that pure melee trick, good thing to have. Can't wait to see the next one!
Yep, that's a sub right there. Good stuff! I was always missing this kind of content when I first started playing not too long ago. Even having self taught most of my current knowledge and skill, this vid alone has improved it further. Eagerly awaiting more, man!
Fantastic idea, and very polished too. I'm generally OK with revenants, but those large clusters tend to annihilate me if I can't strafe-circle to win. Good to see a comprehensive breakdown of what to do in various situations, I'll definitely put these into practise. Next video suggestion; how to 2-shot a cyberdemon with the BFG. No matter how many times I watch somebody do it, I can never manage to pull it off. Something about the angle I'm hitting them, or my timing with the shots must be wrong.
Oh I'm sure this technique will work its way into a video sooner or later! But in the meantime, you can see if this short and to-the-point video by A1s helps: ruclips.net/video/0usYUJoRN6I/видео.html
0:00 - I back up while shooting rockets. If there's no room to continue backing up, I die because that's too many Revenants for a small space and a rocket launcher.
Already over 1k subs, nice. I remember noticing you only had ten after i subbed like a month ago. I thought "this guy has potential" and I love being proven right. In regards to the vid it was neat having an explanation to some of the things i was doing instinctively. I really do have to work on my rev melee though. I'm incredibly consistent at being inconsistent with that.
I should've expected what happened at 16:26, it's a video about revenants after all and you can clearly see the death ball but no, it still caught off guard
A great series. I am glad more people are doing DOOM tech videos like this. I am glad it is not just Decino doing them well. Your video is pretty good as well.
Very cool video! I definitely learned some new stuff, but also gained a greater understanding of some of the things I do instinctually when playing and never really put a lot of conscious thought into.
But the real sure-fire trick to defeating Revenants is to shoot at them until they die.
I'm going to need some peer-reviewed literature to support this.

Fantastic great amazing. I really like your balance between info and quick snappy jokes here and there, I dig that kinda levity. I also appreciate you using shotgun shells to demonstrate rockets lmao
Hope you'll make more guides, I'll watch them all!
Never knew a revenant couldn't block his own rocket! Strange...
Probably to stop the projectile destroying itself when launched
i love your delivery, clip editing, and writing style! the varied visual aids make this a very complete presentation, i showed to to my less savvy friend and they came away with a feeling of "oooh that's how that works!"
im happy to subscribe to another doom creator, you're great.
Came for the strats, but stayed for the SoR tunes (and the strats).
Interesting timing.
First Decino binge in 6 months and I find this listed a few hours after publishing.
More please.
Where has this video been my entire life
Never really thought about what exactly I should do in rev hallways, this is probably going to help to improve my consistency at them. Awesome video!
Making this a series is a wise idea.
Amazing. If there is one thing that this community needed is a good "how to doom" doomtuber, and from the three videos of you i watched, you do it fantastically. I hope you will get more traffic because you deserve it.
(btw, as a keyboard player, unfortunately some of the tactics here are harder for us to pool out)
Just discovered this channel.
I think this has great potential.
I loved the idea of this video, I hope you make more with the other enemies. And it could be interesting to analyze combinations of monsters, like in Plutonia with Chaingunners+Revenants. Or a typical one: Archviles+Demons/Spectres.
It's really nice to see the views going up, getting the recognition it deserves. Keep it up!
I really find it really funny how revenants are susceptible to pain although they are undead skeletons.
Bro I love the streets of rage music. Excellent video, too.
Ooof what a terrible time to take an extended break. This is super kind! Thank you. Hopefully I can get things going again.
Looking forward to more in this series. Good stuff.
Oh man, this video has been so helpful, and I've been wishing for this kind of video for quite a while now. I look forward to the future videos in this series!
I do hope that you make more videos like this, this was great and oh so useful
Really cool video man. I've been playing Doom for a while and I didn't know about that pure melee trick, good thing to have. Can't wait to see the next one!
Great editing and music in this video, you have yourself a new subscriber!
Yep, that's a sub right there. Good stuff! I was always missing this kind of content when I first started playing not too long ago. Even having self taught most of my current knowledge and skill, this vid alone has improved it further. Eagerly awaiting more, man!
This is it, dude. Great video, hope you do more in this style and other intricacies of playing at a higher level.
Love me some SoR midis ^ ^
Very in-depth and engaging to watch!
But in the meantime, you can see if this short and to-the-point video by A1s helps:

@@sobaddoom thanks mate. It appears to be my timing more than anything. I'll keep trying whenever I get the opportunity
0:00 - I back up while shooting rockets.
If there's no room to continue backing up, I die because that's too many Revenants for a small space and a rocket launcher.
This is really helpful as a lesson in combat design
Already over 1k subs, nice. I remember noticing you only had ten after i subbed like a month ago. I thought "this guy has potential" and I love being proven right. In regards to the vid it was neat having an explanation to some of the things i was doing instinctively. I really do have to work on my rev melee though. I'm incredibly consistent at being inconsistent with that.
Excellent video, and I love Revenants. Easily my favorite monster in Doom 2.
I should've expected what happened at 16:26, it's a video about revenants after all and you can clearly see the death ball but no, it still caught off guard
5:00 Your humor is absolute gold. You make me snort so often! 🤣 🤣
5:19 OMG dude you're killing me!!
Love the usage of streets of rage music.
Really good video. Very informative and nicely put together.
Laugh maniacally while saying "is that all you got?!" Followed by me murdering the lot of them.
"While you and his buddy can go for the high score on DDR." I died. 🤣🤣
A great series. I am glad more people are doing DOOM tech videos like this.
I am glad it is not just Decino doing them well. Your video is pretty good as well.
Very cool video! I definitely learned some new stuff, but also gained a greater understanding of some of the things I do instinctually when playing and never really put a lot of conscious thought into.
this was a fantastic video, great info and great sense of humor
Revenants, the 99% reason of my deaths
music that starts at 12:30 what is it
"Whirlwind" from Shinobi 3!
Really great in depth explanations, at the same time as really great visual representation. Looking forward to more :)
