So I was looking for new launch sites, therefore I launched a recon sat on polar orbit around Kerbin. on the Northern Ice Shelf I found an anomaly, so I went to check it out. What a surprise!

No, since green monoliths are in the stock game from the beginning if I'm right. They are rare and appearing in random planets/locations, so they must give you something unique.

The normal monoliths don't give you anything. You need a green one. I found it accidentally - via Kerbnet - while I was looking for new launching sites. This particular green monolith unlocked the ion engine (T3 R&D level) at T2.
In short, I got it without any science.
