Yep. The humour there was more-so characters being shocked and baffled by how he looks, rather than making him a pathetic villain. There are times where the limitations of his design are used for a joke, like when Hawkeye shoots his forehead with an electrified arrow that MODOK can't reach because of his stubby arms, causing him to need to retreat. However, it's not overdone and when it happens it's characters taking advantage of his physical shortcomings rather than him being a bumbling idiot that gets himself into trouble.

I unironically really want a Howard the Duck cartoon now. He is one of my favorite somewhat obscure Marvel character. Also, it seems to me that DC Comics is altogether better on the animation front than Marvel, or at least they have a large repertoire of hit animated movies that outshines their live movie exploits. It's the opposite with Marvel, while they have hit a home run with their live movies, their animations aren't as noteworthy.

My favorite portrayal of MODOK in a cartoon was from Ironman: Armored Adventurers. He was truly scary and intimidating in that show with no hint(that I can remember) of any jokes being made at his expense.
My first time knowing about Modok was in Marvels Ultimate Alliance where he would drain your power if you got questions wrong, He does have a goofy look but I still remember him being threatening.
Personally, the parts of the show I found funniest were when the show made fun of weird, obscure supervillains, heroes, or comic ideas in general. I think that should have been the direction a Marvel comedy show should have went in, adult or otherwise, and strangely, that seems like it would have been the original concept. All the originally planned animated shows were to be devoted to Marvel's most ridiculous characters. I think everyone expected MODOK to be a humorous and self-aware take on the character, but instead, the writers decided to also parody a bunch of adult family sit-coms we already have, and I couldn't really get behind it. Furthermore, there were also moments like MODOK's relationship with his son and the D-List superheroes, that felt almost depressing. I think they were going for the style of the subversive parts of Rick and Morty, but they're not surprising, or infrequent, instead they're treated like sideplots the way they are in Bojack Horseman, and I came away from them not knowing what to think. I think the show was trying to be the wrong thing, and delivered the wrong focus. I think your critique on the voice-acting was very well reasoned, and a great analysis on why the show wasn't as funny as it could have been. but I think the show suffered due to conceptual problems more than execution. But, thanks for bringing up the Harley Quinn show. I want to check it out now.
Sounds like this show was NOT made for the streaming era, where you can literally pause the show at anytime to gather your thoughts or let out a fit of laughter.
Its taking me ages to finish im trying so hard bc i love MODOK the character, but i just feel like i always have something better to do/watch when it comes to this, its just a drag unfortunately
I actually really enjoyed the show. And i think the reason as to why i did was exactly because it was all over the place. Idk it just gave me this chaotic slice of life if life was a comic the office out of bounds feeling and that just worked for me
@@davida12345 modok is one of the many things that game got right imo. In no way is it the greatest superhero game out there, not by a long shot, but I think it has lots of good things about it
I couldn't get into the show after 2nd episode I dropped it and explained it like this to my dad who loves marvel "If you know who the character is in any medium and want to see something funny then this might be for you, but if you don't know Jack about this character you'll be confused and lost."
Think they tried to make this their version of Harley Quinn. HQ is more consistent and knows who it is for and also manages to be really funny, a great send up of DC and Batman lore, and has heart.
You know who could be a great team to make an adult comedy in the Marvel Universe about? The Great Lakes Avengers! They are weird and obscure enough to be laughed at, yet their stories can easily be made more sad, for many heartfelt moments in the series. Just imagine those guys always being upstaged by the New Warriors (not the new book team, the nineties one), and, some time into the show, Squirrel Girl is introduced, and she makes the older, more mature GLA bond with younger and more hopeful New Warriors. A ton of laughs, some genuine drama, whacky and semi-obscure characters... I think this could work REALLY well
Oddly enough, Ben Schwartz plays an even younger (?) character as Dewey in the absolutely fantastic Ducktales reboot. I had that sounds-like-a-grown-ass-man problem with all three of the triplets at first, but by the time I was a couple episodes in, I didn't notice it anymore. I think it's because that show's characters are so strongly written to be their own unique thing. For a show targeted more to kids, it has a ton of really, really funny moments.
Gravity Falls initially had that issue too with Dipper but his maturity compared to Mabel made his adult voice fit his character more and by the end of the series you don't even notice it.
Let me get this straight Deadpool never got a green light even after becoming a character established in the mainstream who’s most notable attribute is being comical and entertaining but THIS show got the go ahead and also warranted enough ad funding to show up in my feed?
I think a more funny angle for M.O.D.O.K would just be to play him kind of like AoSTH Robotnik honestly, more intimidating and competent than that would fit better but cartoonishly evil and charismatic would really work
i think harley quinn works because it was based on real foundations. Harley quinn and ivy were an item in the comics, clayface was an actor in the comics, and harley and joker broke up in the comics. Modok on the other hand, didn't have a foundation to be based on.
In my experience with MODOK (the character), he is downright laughable at some times and cringe at worst. Though the line said by the Hulk to make fun of MODOK will always crack me up. “MODOK, Mental Organism Designed Only for Kickball.” - The Hulk, Super Hero Squad Show

I think the issue is that it was released all at once. If it was a weekly released, people would keep up with it. But I binged it in one day, personally I loved it, and then-that was it lol
I hope more people watch because I really like and I hope there is a season two if nothing else but to just get variety in marvel products because right now other than Spider-Man stuff this is kinda it besides the MCU
This show is being criticized way too hard I hate that people are just zeroing in on what it does wrong but it also does plenty right also the thing about modok not sounding Like more evil is a bad criticism considering he’s marketed on the trailer as an average guy who’s also a villain
I really like the plot of the show and hope it is taken more seriously because the concept of knowing you can win but that to do that you need to loose those you love I find really interesting and I would like see what the shows does with that plus I think the comedy will get better and its just trying to find it’s footing
@@anitamann9217 And all the complaint videos just boil down to just the same two complaints: They don't like the animation style, to which I say boo hoo f***em hoo... And MODOK isn't just another rip-off of the Monarch from Venture Bros, with a heavy coat of Deadpool/Harley Quinn for good measure. Yeah, Monarch clones are played out. Most of the people I've seen who liked MODOK were fans of stuff like Dan Vs., or Dr. Doofenshmirtz, where the main character's usually an antihero, sometimes an outright villain, so they usually fail, but when they get the rare victory, it's not in the ways they expect. But the fanboy types are right- Everything should be so perfectly catered to their little niche idea of what a good show/movie is that no one else has anything. I quit watching the MCU when it became every character is basically how much can they be like Deadpool without getting rid of what people liked before this trend, because, well... I can't stand Deadpool. I think he's boring as hell, he's like watching watching a self-aware episode of modern family guy. When every character became insert percent Deadpool, the MCU was dead to me. I heard the Black Widow movie isn't very good, and to be fair... It doesn't look like something I'd enjoy. But if it follows MODOK's lead, and stops trying to make everyone insert percent Deadpool, I might be able to find things to enjoy about it. As opposed to just wondering why I'm watching a bunch of actors cosplay the characters while doing live-action Family Guy, like I do with Deadpool, and the modern MCU outside of MODOK.
Is it more sad or more hilarious that theres so many comments of people upset over not taking the character of modok seriously... MODOK! A giant head in a trashcan. Yall get mad when they make Captain Boomerang a joke too? Lol
I liked it. Wasn’t a home run but if they made him more dangerous it would’ve been better. Like at the end if he pulled off some huge catastrophe, that killed off some high level yet not as known characters (Leader, Mangog, Dark Beast, StarBran, Hyperion, Gladiator) it would’ve been funnier.

It's the opposite with Marvel, while they have hit a home run with their live movies, their animations aren't as noteworthy.
believe it or not, i think my first exposure to the character of Modok was actually from Iron Man: Armored Adventures
i just thought "huh, he looks weird"
I think this show has potential. And the moments with modok and aim are interesting. I get a feeling they'll find their footing in season 2.
Patton Oswalt played a fun villain on Kim Possible, I think he had poor direction
One thing that helped there was that he was over the top and cartoonish. Where here his voice is just... normal guy.
Patton oswalt played a villain in real life when he killed his sick wife.
@@kameronlavender1478 not funny, report
8:55 FALSE his most public recognizable iconic role was in the phineas and ferb special
Even though i actually didnt mind Pattons performance, actually quite liked it, how dare you make me remember megas xlr and how great bruce campbell would have been here
the gwenpool books do modok pretty well as a comedic antagonist although i think it works better cause he's removed from the book early and even his removal was somewhat comedic
I think it would be cool for you to take a look at avengers: earth's mightiest heroes. no one talks about it and it's one of the best superhero kid shows I've seen
superhero kids show might not sound too impressive but this is the same category with every spider-man and x-men show so I think it's pretty high praise
@@soundsofstabbing3627 I wouldn't describe it as a kids show, seeing as it's pretty mature for its target audience. Just call it a show, lol
@@supermysticsonic2 well, the main audience is kids, it's just that it can also be enjoyed by others, I even first watched this show when *I* was a kid
I remember that show, it was bangin. Had a great intro ngl.
dude, this is like a fever dream, I saw this on an ad on the newspaper and thought "theres no fucking way, this dude who ive only seen fucking once in a gameboy advanced marvel alliance game got a fucking TV show" and forgot it on purpose out of spite
My favorite portrayal of MODOK in a cartoon was from Ironman: Armored Adventurers. He was truly scary and intimidating in that show with no hint(that I can remember) of any jokes being made at his expense.
I agree that modok was a scary badass enemy to iron man
God if they wanted to make him scary and comedic he'd be the joker/green Goblinish
Many people nowadays seems to think that its not possible to take him seriously anymore only because of the way he looks.
The show modoc seems like it was made by robot Chicken but you know they got the green light to make a marvel series
12:31 “This show is as funny as a cancer diagnosis most of the time.” This one single line made me laugh more than all ten episodes of Modok. Kudos.
I’m pretty sure the reason why people try to make M.O.D.O.K a comedic character is his design. “Haha, he’s got a big head lol”.
There have been funny comic books like Nextwave and I Can't Believe It's Not The Justice League. But they don't have good comedy writers anymore.
Sounds like this show was NOT made for the streaming era, where you can literally pause the show at anytime to gather your thoughts or let out a fit of laughter.
Funny enough tom kenny did play modok in super hero squad.
Its taking me ages to finish im trying so hard bc i love MODOK the character, but i just feel like i always have something better to do/watch when it comes to this, its just a drag unfortunately
I know that feeling
I actually really enjoyed the show. And i think the reason as to why i did was exactly because it was all over the place. Idk it just gave me this chaotic slice of life if life was a comic the office out of bounds feeling and that just worked for me
I feel like modok hasn't been given the serious treatment because of his design. It's goofy af.
The avengers game. ... Like he points out in this video. Fool
@@davida12345 modok is one of the many things that game got right imo. In no way is it the greatest superhero game out there, not by a long shot, but I think it has lots of good things about it
@@thegoldavenger.3829 I agree I think, I think his portrayal in the game was amazing. I just meant that was a good example of modok outside the comics
After learning that the voice of MODOK is in Minecraft story mode I can't look at him the same
I couldn't get into the show after 2nd episode I dropped it and explained it like this to my dad who loves marvel
"If you know who the character is in any medium and want to see something funny then this might be for you, but if you don't know Jack about this character you'll be confused and lost."
Think they tried to make this their version of Harley Quinn. HQ is more consistent and knows who it is for and also manages to be really funny, a great send up of DC and Batman lore, and has heart.
This show was announced long before Harley Quinn came out.
This show is definitely more similar to robot chicken then Harley Quinn.
Agreed
You know who could be a great team to make an adult comedy in the Marvel Universe about? The Great Lakes Avengers! They are weird and obscure enough to be laughed at, yet their stories can easily be made more sad, for many heartfelt moments in the series. Just imagine those guys always being upstaged by the New Warriors (not the new book team, the nineties one), and, some time into the show, Squirrel Girl is introduced, and she makes the older, more mature GLA bond with younger and more hopeful New Warriors. A ton of laughs, some genuine drama, whacky and semi-obscure characters... I think this could work REALLY well
Honestly I think that shuma gorath would function better as the main character in a comedic show because of the endless possibilities
It probably would’ve been better idea if the lead character was a regular aim agent, and modok was just their boss or something
Disney basically owns Hulu. 70% at least.
Let me get this straight Deadpool never got a green light even after becoming a character established in the mainstream who’s most notable attribute is being comical and entertaining but THIS show got the go ahead and also warranted enough ad funding to show up in my feed?
someone go back in time and tell this man that hit-monkey happened
When I hear M.O.D.O.K. talking, I only hear remy the rat. I can't help it
I think a more funny angle for M.O.D.O.K would just be to play him kind of like AoSTH Robotnik honestly, more intimidating and competent than that would fit better but cartoonishly evil and charismatic would really work
I was so excited tô watch this show, a super villain having a normal life comedy would be great, like a Doofenshmirtz show
it's like a robot chicken skit that was spread too thin- sort of stretched, like butter scraped over too much bread
The best animated version of MODOK to me will always be the one from the Superhero Squad Show
I am from the future, if you think this is bad modock representation just wait until Ant-Man 3
You got $5 a month from me Xavier. You’ve made some fantastic content and deserve the chance to go full time
6:52 I thought i was fucking hallucinating when Earthbound came on.
I like patton oswald, modok and stop motion so I thought I might like the show but I’m glad to hear your thoughts before I might see it.
Who would have guessed there's more to the show than that
i think harley quinn works because it was based on real foundations.
“MODOK, Mental Organism Designed Only for Kickball.”
- The Hulk, Super Hero Squad Show
Best depiction of Modok is in 90’s Iron Man TAS as The Mandarin’s right hand scientist to rival Tony Stark
From a video game to a show, he can’t seem to catch a break.
Gonna watch a few more vids of yours before subbing, but this was great and measured critique! I haven't heard anyone mention this show, and based on what i saw i'm not surprised.
anybody remember modok from the original Iron Man cartoon, good times
As bad as marvels avengers was, i really liked modok in that and i agree that he should mainly be takem seriously. Definitely glad that i played that before seeing the hulu show
23:37 I'm sorry, but the idea that because the internet isn't talking about MODOK means it's stale is a pretty weak argument. There isn't much internet buzz about Better Call Saul but that doesn't mean it isn't a hidden gem of a show.
I hear people talk about bcs all the time though. It's a veritable cult sleeper hit.
@@kat8559 Er, I don't know where you've been but no one talks about Better Call Saul, especially not as much as they talk about Breaking Bad.
Also, how do we get to point that something must be trending in order for it to be good?
I’m pretty sure this show was announced before Harley Quinn came out, so it couldn’t have been a response to that.
Also, the Hit-Monkey show is still happening, but apparently it might be 2D animated and more action-oriented.
It definitely was.
I think the issue is that it was released all at once. If it was a weekly released, people would keep up with it. But I binged it in one day, personally I loved it, and then-that was it lol
You mentioned the other animated shows Marvel was going to do but didn't. Now they released Hit Monkey. Any plans on reviewing that?
god an office-style mockumentary set in AIM wouldve been genuinely so good
there isn’t even fire at the bottom of his body to keep him floating 🥱
My ideal voice for modok would be Richard horvitz, but that's mostly imagining modok as invader zim
In my opinion I would have prefer Gilbert gottfried as m.o.d.o.k
I just read "Modok: Head Games" comic and even though it's written by the same people, I found it funnier and more enjoyable than the show.
Jessie falcon is the best modok voice actor
