He Brad! Missed you! ;) Well done! Derive is not an easy thing to explain and understand. A good approach in explaining derive is that the first part of the timeline is in the original and the timeline is continued in the new file. So making changes to the original will ripple all the way down the timeline in both files. But having access only to the last part of the timeline in the derived file no changes can affect the original. It’s really like a timeline sprout! Hope this makes sense! It’s how I understand it.

BTW you dont have to go to parameters to define, it carries the inventor trick of typing the variable name and parameter when you start and its auto written into user table of parameters eg num_of_slots = 6 in the numeric field as you are carrying out the features operation. The polygon feature is still not able to update user parameters. I.e. if you use a user parameter to specify the number of the edges of a polygon in a sketch and change the parameter later, then there is no update of the value and the polygon stays the same. In the past this was also with the text height of the text feature. But this is now fixed and works as assumed. Please have a look at the polygon feature and let it work in the same way as the text feature. So it will improve the parametric design further. CU Jens

Yes if we could have some more CAM tutorials (for new users)as we have a new 3 axis mill (Ajax) and getting a 4 axis Kimla router - if anyone knows which post processor they use would be really helpful. Also would be great if Fusion could add more and more machines and tool holders to there libary would be really great, thanks loads, JT

Hi Brad. Thanks once again for a great tutorial. I do some DIY metal work at home and would love to see a tutorial on modelling these kind of stuff. I work mostly with thin walled tubing. As a South African, we work in metric, but I am familiar with imperial measurements. Most of the tubing is 1.6mm and 2mm. I would love to see how you would, let's say design a driveway gate. Main frame is 76mm x 38mm x 2mm rectangular tubing and then some 38mm x 38mm x 1.6mm tubing inside. Especially a drawing with a bill of materials and a cut list for these.
Hi Brad, I know it has been over a year since this video was published, but presently I am following your tutorials. I came across your videos on Fusion 360 only recently. I am really impressed by your knowledge and skill on Fusion 360, but most of all I am impressed by the way you use the Fusion commands; really out of any box thinker. I am writing this comment to share with you an issue I came across during the Modifying the Derived Model part (31:55). While trying to delete the faces, the delete failed. I noticed that the selection did not contain all the faces. The problem turned out to be that in the Select>Selection Filters, the Select Through was not checked.
Creating a component first adds an unnecessary component that is not attached to the root component (no asbuilt rigid joint was added). This means if this model is inserted into an assembly and joined via geometry, the empty root component occurrence will be floating unattached. Since there is no geometry in it, I guess this won’t be noticed. It will likely stay at assembly origin unless the inserted model is moved-on-insert. This is true for other instances on model (say pattern is used) and also instances of the derived model which has same useless root component. You could add the asbuilt rigid joint in this “part” or (better) not create component in first step. This model is intended to be a part, so don’t make it an assembly right off the bat. Fusion is weird this way, allowing creation on assembly in single save-able model and not treating subassemblies as rigid by default. I know this causes headaches but that is the current state. Fusion leads to unconstrained components very easily. I think Brad has a good reason to want to create component off the bat but maybe that is a reflex when creating an assembly and not when creating a part for insertion into an assembly.
Addition: nice derive demo BTW! I say Fusion is different WRT components but there are good things about this. I don’t mean to be negative. It does trip people up.
ok HOW are you rotating the model around without the mouse? I can see the mouse doing it's own thing and highlighting, but you are spinning the model around. Did you predefine some hotkeys or is this something new with fusion?
I can almost geurantee a space mouse. They have a smoother acceleration profile than a mouse along all axes and let you move roll/pitch/yaw and XYZ all at once by different amounts.
