    It's definitely hard to understand what happened at the head of the UTMB mens race especially considering how Katie Scheide and Ruth Croft both absolutely nailed the race (and haven't been given the exposure they deserve for it).
    I suspect Tom almost over-prepared and simply forgot to go out and enjoy himself. I felt sick for him as I followed the advice on preparation he's been giving out on his podcast as closely as I could and it worked for me like a dream at the TORX130 last week. I'm sure he will have his day at UTMB.
    Francois D'Haene's victory at TDG was stunning considering he dropped from Hardrock a month or so ago having not sufficiently recovered from an injury. Was he seriously attempting a Hardrock / TDG double?

      Oh I was going to do TOR130 but was just too tired after a busy summer. Well done on your finish. Will be there next year. Yes Katie Schide particularly with a course record. Amazing. Tom will get the win I'm sure eventually. I just think he felt the weight of expectation this time.

    With Jim, considering his career wins, he never has to win UTMB again, and because it's a little more technical than his best race, he may never feel the need to finish again. For Tom, he still had one of the best seasons in ultra running this year. I wouldn't be surprised if he had some niggles too. In that clip you had of him it reminds me of when I had a minor injury and was focusing on form to try to not further injure it.

    • @FilmMyRun
      @FilmMyRun  15 дней назад

      I think Jim loves Western States too much and it's much more his kind of race. But to be considered the greatest ever, he would need to win UTMB again I think. Thanks for commenting.

    We've done analysis of the race and as far as we can tell Tom was super smooth, he was not pushing, but had a sudden power drop starting from Bertone, so did Germain, but his drop was from Champex-Lac and a few others but not Pau who had a continuous effort degradation until he dropped out. Looking at the common denominator, everyone of those losing power, including Jim was on high carb strategy and what no-one tells that from a number upwards, carbs won't help but actually stop you from performing. The digestion system is similar to the metabolic system, it needs to be used at a % of its capacity. If you want to go deeper into the topic, reach out.

    • @FilmMyRun
      @FilmMyRun  15 дней назад

      You mention 'power'. Are you invested in Running Power as a metric? Also you talk about a carb strategy being a bad thing in this case. Are you a proponent of fat burning or 80/20 by any chance? What organisation do you represent? If you could explain a little further. Thanks for your comment.

    • @YouTubedarek
      @YouTubedarek 15 дней назад +1

      I don’t think I understand what you’re trying to say.
      Are you suggesting high carbs is always a problem? Only a problem with lower effort and needs to be a percentage of perceived effort?
      What about the finishers? Were they on non-high carb strategies?

    • @zsoltkovacs5093
      @zsoltkovacs5093 15 дней назад

      @@FilmMyRun effort is like GAP (Strava) or NGP (TrainingPeaks) is a metabolic equivalent of pace on slope to pace on flat or like specific power (W/kg) which is not dependent on runner's mass. With a bit of data science we can reverse engineer this value from the split times at checkpoints. Obviously we don't have every runner's individualized GAP, so we use average, but we see very little difference between the average model and individualized one even with those runners we coach and have created individualized GAP for. Carb strategy bad? Surely not. If you want to maximize performance you need to maximize carb strategy. But no-one tells you there is a limit. Just like you don't want to run at your Lactate Threshold during UTMB, similarly you don't want to exercise at 100% of what you can digest in 1 hour without being bloated there is a very well defined % of that capacity you can sustain for a set period of time. I'm not a proponent of anything - we're taking science at the basis of what we do and surely we take experience as well. I am personally an ultra-runner as well. You can check www.spectro.life or facebook.com/spectro.life If you need more details, you can get in touch so we don't bloat the internet here :)

    • @zsoltkovacs5093
      @zsoltkovacs5093 15 дней назад +1

      @@RUclipsdarek sure not, high carbs is good. Till a point. If you cross this point, your're stomach can't handle the load and will keep stacking the food, gathering acid which will damage your gut and in turn will slow digestion even more than initially. With lower carbs you're better off, you just slow down worst case, but with too much carbs, you'll come to a halt. It is a very fine line between failure and optimal performance and I suggest most of people if they don't exactly know what they are doing, err on the side of caution and better let some seconds, minutes on the table rather than turn the table on you. Another thing, when there is heat, more blood is going to skin and less blodd is going to the guts, that means the carbs need to be reduced even further because the capacity is just reduced, similar with higher speed. HIgher speed generates higher core temperature which needs more cooling, more blood to the skins and you know the rest. Now what I suppose happened with the elite runners, was a combination of the 3: heat, speed, carbs and even 10 grams of carbs more (after 90 grams) puts their strategy from being able to endure 20-21 hours to just 7 hours.

    Once they know they're not going to podium, they can't be bothered so they dnf. An elite can't be seen to cross the line in 30 hours because it wouldn't look good for the aponsors. It's pathetic really.

    All the complaints about stomach issues every year is also an excuse. At that level it shouldn't happen. Everyone eats way too many gels, too much sugar and the awful noodle soup, you literally have to dodge the noodle puke piles, but they still eat it. More normal food is the answer.

      @@vic6820i said the same to sage canaday and he took massive umbridge. So i guess the response here is along the lines of "let's see you try running utmb then blah blah blah". My point with sage is he's *never* had a decent 100 mile result. I also suggested carbs per hour could be the driver and he didn't respond after that. I honestly don't think he has the data though.
