Running Australia’s hardest 100km while needing a hip replacement

- MY NEMESIS: Meet Pete. He and I were cross-country rivals at school. I reckon I won more races than Pete, but I’m likely wrong. Twenty five years later, and too many laps of a basketball court, Pete’s on the verge of getting both hips replaced. Over a bottle of wine one night, we cooked up the idea of one last hurrah, one last run to see out the old, bone-on-bone hips. Heck, why not make it the hardest 100km race in Australia?! The wine worked. We signed up to Hut to Hut. Conjoined as a running pair, with a 22 hour cut-off, we set out to complete one of the hardest running loops on the continent. Can Pete make it? Who bloody knows.

This is one heck of a race folks. I'm back for 2025, all going to plan, and there are still bibs available for the solo and teams 100k laps...Get on it! Brilliant cause, mind bending terrain, and world class people. www.hut2hut.oscars100.com.au
The title is horrendous… had me thinking your hip was cooked!
I did a version of this as a hike in 4 days after seeing an old vid of yours of the cross cut saw. Inspired me to get out there and I can testify that is not running terrain 😂
"Life moves pretty fast if you don't look up mate" Beau Miles - 2024
Judging by the end of the video there it might have actually been 2022
I had to pause the video and just appreciate for a moment how wise this man is. We are all blessed to get to hear his honest thoughts on the world, and to see it through his eyes, even if only for 20 minutes.
Had Mr Peter Bruce as a teacher in 2019, he introduced the class to your videos and I’ve been watching ever since. Great to see him in a video!!!
This will probably get lost in the comments but, words can't explain how much I love watching your videos. The world would be a much better place if there were more people like you, Beau.
Always a good day when Beaudy uploads
I know right. It’s been a second
I was just feeling super thankful that Beau dropped a banger
Beaudy uploady
Exactly!
"You lose a parent and you instantly become the next generation" send a shiver down my spine, such a powerful phrase.
And it’s so true. When my grandmother passed I suddenly became the generation of mothers, not children and that marked a huge shift for me. Different decisions.
In the click of a finger you're making the decisions of life on your own.
Yes, what a sentence. At this point I immediately paused the video for a longer period of time. I had to think about it and will definitely continue to think about it. My father passed away in 2021. A lot has happened since then, but these words, this sentence... there are so many miles (and thoughts) between then and now, but no time has passed. Thank you both, I hope Pete understands when I say: see you next corner. I wish you both only the best! This video means a lot to me!
I say to people that when our parents die, we become the adult in the room. Don't like being the adult!😂
I miss my dad
Inspirational bloke. Never shall I whinge about sore joints from work and sport, at the least I'll think about this machine to give me some motivation to keep on chugging.
There are absolutely ultra's and trail running after hip replacement! I had a total left hip replacement. After recovering and taking it slow, I've built back up to 40-50 mile weeks, and longer when prepping for anything over marathon distance. The key is this: The doctor will say "don't run" because it extends the life of the implant. So what? If your health suffers because you can't run, what's the point?? Instead, take it easy, make sure you're doing strength workouts, and build it back up. If it does deteriorate over time, again, so what? Have a revision done - At the point you'll need it, the technology will be even better. Don't let a replacement stop you!
Inspiring to hear
Classic used to be when you have a hip or joint replacement, you are locked in for at least another unless you get hit by a bus in the meantime.
The newer items are better, but the join of the new material is still not 100% like the original item it replaces, more so when it comes to impacts.
Yeah. Let's make everybody else pay for my hips and clog up the health system because I want to ignore doctors advice.
@@mitchellking4988 You don't seem to understand the point. If your health will suffer from *not* running (which I said in my original post), then you should stay fit and run. But hey, misinterpret it however suits your agenda :)
My 86 yr old friend says she's going horseback riding next week. What the he## use it while you can!
Well, Beau ... are YOU recovered from your recent illness? You pressed ahead far too long without knowing you were sick and I really hope you're on the mend. It's good to see you out and enjoying the grind.
I'm on the mend Sherry. This was 2.5 years ago also...
@@BeauMiles I was wondering whether you still have to wear those bloody face masks in Australia. Well, there you go.
@@MrJspitsoh no. A mask. Absolutely tragic.
I’m here to say , I’ve had my hip replaced and grieved running long distances. Until I had it replaced and realised that it way more durable then it’s studied. I’ve ran a 50 km trail ultra on my 1 year anniversary of my replacement and I’m a year 2 months post op.
You will be able to run an ultra post op, you see !!
Pete, don't doubt yourself. I've had both of my hips replaced. When I was in the my 30's. Now I'm 45 and I'm the most active I've ever been. Gym workouts, lifting heavy weights. Long walks. Bike rides. Get through recovery and then go full on.
Turns a bit of on the trail flattery and a bloody leg got us a cameo 😂 See you again on Valentine's Day Boys ✌️
deadly combo haha. australian culture is so refreshing
Whenever I am procrastinating or being lazy but wishing I wasn’t, a video from beau pops up and makes me slap myself around the face and get out of my own head. The videos themselves are all great, but the real magic is the effect they have on me and I’m sure others, to make us stop thinking and start doing.
I put this on and said to my girlfriend "you know Beau Miles right?" And she looked puzzled for a bit and went "isn't he the one who put his daughter in a bucket or something" 🤣🙂
I like this ben. That's the one
9:25 you know you are a bit of a nut when Beau looks speechless into the camera :D
reaaaal ! that man is NOT easy to be made speechless, what a guy
If it takes 50km to make you feel like you've failed, then I think you've succeeded pretty well overall.
There are a lot of engineers and doctors working on improving artificial bones and joints, who knows, in a few years Pete might just do another 100km. There's a lot of hope for the future.
The hip replacement can actually be what makes running again possible!
Goggins 2.0 incoming?
"The start and the finish of days give beautifully optimistic light." Beau Miles
This resonates. What a deep thought. Thank you sir.
19:35 - How do you be open and vulnerable with your friends but not be a 'burden' Beau? Seems like you two are very close and do talk about difficult stuff.
We're all going to die. Some of us will live long enough for our bodies to betray us. Some will have the courage to fight while their flesh crumbles.
Beau I’ve watched everyone of your videos and this is the first that’s moved me to tears. Calling Pete a warrior is an understatement, the determination to even consider attempting this with his issue and then having the spirit to go back for round 2 is completely heroic. Good on ya mate and cant wait for the next one.
Blimey! I just tried to walk 100km along the nice, flat, Thames Path. I made it to 50km...
Coromandel?
Youve successfully completed the first 50km - and youll knock off the rest - what a great achievement!
Do some mudlarking! Well, get a license and do some. Pretty good way to spend time on the Thames.
I’m always so amazed at equally how fragile and ridiculously resilient our bodies are
If you want to, you can absolutely run 100km---even 100mi, in the old money---with two replaced hips. But the wanting to is the thing that matters.
Mr. Pete is incredible and so are you Beau. You are the top content creator in RUclips for me, Thank You
This film touched my heart deeply.
Thank you Beau and Pete❤
17:01 - this was a profound statement about losing a parent and what it means for the individual who lost their mom or dad. Had me choked up thinking about losing my own dad and what that would feel like. Thank you so much Beau for sharing this story and journey with Pete. Having a friend like you no doubt has helped Pete deal with the loss. Good on ya mate for being a true one!
It takes a positive person to be as strong as Pete is, fantastic film Beau, cannot wait to watch Pete give it another go!
Perfect...mates taking on personal challenges....accepting the physical and exploring the emotional...Great Stuff!! Ta Beau. Onya Pete.
Machine! An absolut machine!
I knew someone who had a hip replacement and he ran after it. Maybe not an ultra marathon but 10Ks etc. Hope he gets an optimal result.
I know that Pete is a serious bloke which deserves a lot of good things. He is a true hero. Also you Beau for your beautiful uploads. I always sweat a tear watching your vids!
Eagerly awaiting the next film ;)
Incredible grit Pete!
Lost my dad suddenly a month ago and he has also called me an idiot for various athletic undertakings. I'll honor him by continuing to be an idiot, might just do an Ironman to really prove his point.
Thanks for the video Beau, had a little cry seeing you guys work together through hard times.
Such a beautiful story about an enduring friendship.
Yesss!! I thought this one was beautiful! Nature, grief, wacky Australians, it has it all! Super excited for a 2nd part!
The Australian countryside is absolutely wild. Every time Beau shows it it’s just awesome and inspiring. What a magical place. I couldn’t be doing with the wildlife though. 😳
As someone who has gone from cranking out a 100 miler pretty regularly to a series of DNFs, I feel I can relate. Best of luck to Pete. Looking forward to the next video.
Such a typical Aussie way of talking about a good friend - call him a bastard 🤣
Boy, that was a difficult (but wonderful) watch. Gosh!
Absolute fucking mad lads
Mate you’ll be back into running even with hip replacements with the mindset you have. Good job fellas!
Dude my hip does not need replacing yet and I never would have made it half as far. Well done and good luck with the surgery.
I just love how your films make me feel. I always feel more motivation to do something, to try something new, to adventure and to get after it. Thank you
Love you Beau you bloody legend
bloody legends, both of yas
Just when I thought Beau was the most inspirational person out there, he goes and introduces us to his mate. Pair of legends.
I wince constantly watching Beau (and Friends) put themselves through it. I still watch, but mate I feel it. What an effort.
Another one from the secret screenings! I still haven’t bitten the bullet yet but I’ve been heavily considering the 50km race ever since the screening night. I’m more of a bushwalker than a bushrunner and I definitely don’t have the legs for the full 100 but I reckon 50 might be the sweet spot. Cheers Beau you bloody ripper!!
Puts a smile on my face when Beau uploads
I'm so doing this next year!! Thx Beau
i'll wait here 🤣
Yess!!
I love the changes you made to this film since the secret screenings, Beau and Mitch. Beautiful footage, more banter, and an even more emotional film. Stunning work!
Beautiful stuff mate! It was a gem of a short film and touching how you talked about life and loss with a good buddy. Have recently lost my last parent, my mum and it's been a surreal situation, to say the least! Well done Beau
The end.. HOOOOLY! What an absolute machine Pete is.
I'm 45. Two young kids, and been running for a couple of years. I identify so much with Pete. I ran my first trail marathon a few weeks back, and now I dread the day when the cut-off sweeper of my running life taps me on the shoulder. Keep going Pete! Great job Beau.
I was a 4days/week climber, would travel the world to climb limestone (China, Spain, etc). I have peripheral neuropathy due to so much crimping limestone. Never thought I'd identify as anything, but a climber. The social circle can be amazing. The adventures stunning. I stopped climbing and have a new identity that doesn't cause further damage to my body. I decided that I wanted to do something more noble with my life than chase limestone. I got over it. I have a tree nursery now and harvest all of the tree seed out in the wild.
One can move on.
how beau doesnt have millions of subs is one of the 7 wonders of the world
the best youtuber
I picked up running a year ago because of you
It's entirely possible I'd pay for a Beau Miles ASMR track with encouraging statements placed throughout...
What action camera are you using? Those shots were too good!!!
Great video Beau. Good on ya, Pete, for having a crack at something most people don't even dream of doing. Thanks for being brave and sharing the journey with the rest of us. Can't wait for the next film.
Good on you Pete, and sorry to hear about your Dad. Beau, there is no-one more encouraging and uplifting than you as a running companion. Legend!
i feel like i would be a much different, and probably much better person if i had a friend like Beau. i think we all need a little Beau in our lives tbh. what a unique and amazing an inspirational man.
thank you for sharing your stories and your wisdom with us, mate.
"He decided to go around again".
Damn I love ultra running. That's the spirit.
I lost my Dad to Cancer 13 days before my first ever 50km run to raise money for Cancer research. He believed in me and knew I could do it. I wish he was there to see me through it but I know he was watching from somewhere. I cannot wait for part 2 to see Pete smash this for his Dad 🙌🏼
Hey Beau, when are you going to organize a run event? That organization would be good video
this is just too good! motion is lotion they say. Cant run away from everything, but sure it feels good to be moving. Amazing film!
What a bloody nutter. Good on him! Great film, very emotional, especially when you realise that he’s facing his own mortality probably for the first time.
Good luck Pete, hope it all goes well and you'll be on the tracks again soon.
What a bloke! And how beautiful to see you going through his emotions as well Beau. Great film, as always.
There’s only a few of your films Beau that make me tear up, and this was one.
I’m very much looking forward to seeing the next chapter. Salute my brother 🫡
Inspirational !!!
What a crazy man , but deadset inspiring.
And crscking vid as always Beau
68 here, former runner. From ages 14 to 38= 31,000 miles. Had to quit…back disc issues/hip pain. 6 years ago…finally got R hip replaced. Wish I had done it sooner! But I miss being able to run even more so. Still.
There’s always a time in running and adventuring you tell your friends or family, “I’m going to do this.” and they tell you you’re crazy. You tell them that you’re not, accomplish the task, and prove that you aren’t that crazy after all. This though, is genuinely mad. 😳
The rush of adrenaline I got when I saw Pete taking off for the second time. Good on both of you and can’t wait to see the results of the second race. Finish or not, it’s having the gumption to take life head on that means the most!
Bloody brilliant video, just summed up everything I hold dear in ultra running, friendship, humanity and what mateship means to me
You remind me of a Labrador. Absolutely buzzed about life, brightening peoples days with your positive energy. Thanks for your videos.
Love from Scotland. 🏴
I love that your videos show just how spectacular Australia is. A lot of foreigners think it’s either desert or beaches. Not many know how rugged and beautiful it is here.
How do you find friends who do such adventures with you? I want that, I need that!!🙈😎
You bloody ripper. You guys have much positivity. Looking forward to the next instalment.
Looking forward to the next instalment.
What a tough bustard Pete is
3:41 is like a scene from a movie! A midnight precession, illuminated only by the lights they hold. Beautiful shot.
Have to say Pete, I got a little bit chocked up right there at then end, at the start of the 2nd attempt. Goodonya! Again an amazing short film Beau! Respect for the both of ya’s!
absolutely fabulous Beau. You beauty. You should come and do some walks over here in New Zealand. It would blow your socks off
As always, a spectacular film.
I'm currently recovering from a total knee replacement. I was a trail runner until the pain became too difficult to manage. My other knee will probably need to be done in a couple of years. I can relate to his pain. I kept hiking and backpacking until it was bone on bone pain. Working my way back to the trails now.
Awesome stuff, fellas. About time you get your MAMIL on...no lycra necessary.
Loved that Beaudy! I think you're at your best when you're guiding and coaching - a great watch 💪🏻🤗
right Beau I'll proudly admit that this was the first time I watched a video of yours with tears in my eyes
Wow what a movie and what a man and friendship. Well done Beau for being a great mat to him.
good ONYA beaudy! Your lessons on life as you age bring me the reflection and appreciation for life that I love, I'm definitely living better as a young knucklehead cause of you and people like Pete who you share stories with. Keep 'em comin, much love from Vermont
Pete we love you and Mate at 51kms you fricken killed it man!
Proud of you. All the best for your future.
It was quite emotional to see Pete being wheeled off in a wheelchair when the race was over. It confirms some of the fears as a viewer in this story. But it also paints a picture of Pete's mental battle. His desire to be fit and finish the race, versus his body which made him unable.
Then the video ends with that absolutely absurd cliffhanger... what a character that man is...
When someone totally flakes like that, I've found that the best thing is plain crisps and slivers of chocolate, washed down with a small amount of plain water.
Wow but Pete embodies “The Obstacle is the way”. What a legend
Ending was great, Pete is a beast. If he can run 60K in the mountains, why does he need hip replacement ? Majority of people with healthy hips wont make it 60k, so surely there is no point :)
As always , I'm looking forward to the next film . Thanks Beau .
this race looks amazing. I'd love to give it a crack
Beautiful video and I wish Pete a speedy recovery
