There was a lot of technological optimism in the 1960s.
I'd say risk adverse. Suprised they didn't try powering it with nuclear energy somehow, because the 50s and 60s just were... Quite insane with nuclear energy.
What the hell was the range on that thing?
Like you just ejected from your jet, probably compressing your spine. Then you have Vietcon coming down on you, but wait! Salvation! A helicopter drops a helicopter!
So you put together your helicopter just in time since they saw the air drop.
Get in as they are bearing down. Say, "ah ha! Not TODAY SUCKERS!" As you evade AK 47 rounds.
Off in the horizon they see you run out of gas, and crash for the second time in 30 minutes...

Thats some James Bond level ingineering
The “James Bond” contraption, which I seem to recall being named “Little Nellie” was a gyro-copter and didn’t need anything but a pusher-propellor and that was the engines only job. You could take off from a small piece of ground, even shorter if you hand spin the rotors first and any forward motion caused by the propeller would cause the air to spin the rotors faster until the second you pull on the stick and up you go.
The only negative is that unless you’re flying into a strong headwind then hovering above a fixed position is extremely buttock clinching, yet compared to helicopters they are incredibly easy to fly, such that if the engine stops the rotors will continue to spin (think sycamore seeds) and if you maintain a specific AoA then you won’t crash. Another nice feature is that because the rotors aren’t attached to an engine there no need for a tail rotor. With all the weight saved vs that of this helo as well as it’s far quieter engine and prop noise from the rotor tips they’re probably a better choice for a downed airman, provided you have a few clear space in front to get the ground speed up to requirements.
The guy that built the James Bond version could be seen at airshows flying side saddle as there were no pedals necessary, unless you count the foot plates which double up as brakes and there’s no tail rotor to mess with.

Black people invented that.
You can buy the plans to build your own. The original design was just for a very simple helicopter that anyone could build at home. The military was interested and they tried slightly larger versions based off of the original. It’s a fun helicopter, I built and own one. The main thing is, nothing is made to be used as a helicopter, so everything wears out fast. I replace bearings in everything but the engine every 5 hours. Anything that moves should be checked thoroughly before every flight. 3 hours of work to fly for 20min.
Just an FYI folks. This helicopter was designed and built for downed pilots to fly out of Harm’s Way during the Vietnam War. One is on display at the ARMY AVIATION MUSEUM at Fort Rucker, Alabama. I don’t believe that they have changed the name of Fort Rucker? Hope you have enjoyed the note. God Bless

They carried them on some missions but stopped after crew chiefs began shooting them down. (67N Certified Aircrew Member)
There is something ironic about a pilot getting shot down in a multi million dollar aircraft only to be given an incrediblely sketchy second helicopter to try again
Also at Ft Eustis, VA.
The USA entered the Vietnam War on March 8, 1965 and these things were cancelled in 1961, so it highly improbably that they were designed for use in the Vietnam war. There were only 12 built in 3 different variants. 6 are in museums, 1 is privately owned, and 5 have been destroyed by the builder. I'm 100% certain that none were ever used in the Vietnam war or shot down by crew chiefs, because none entered military service or completed military tests.

Another topic that should be recognised more is in the Korean War, the USAF was attempting to develop ejection seats that turned into gliders, small aeroplanes, or gyrocopters.
All this would happen mid air
Sounds great
Yeah nts, also for the Ov-10 bronco there was a system which would eject the whole front part in the development stages, which could both float like a boat and act as shelter for the downed pilots
But the glider would be shot down again. Then they would have to use parachutes. 😅
No way USAF thought of that!
I came up with that idea when I was 4 years old!
My ejection seat could also transform into a mini-tank then convert into a hovercraft when it entered water!

MAD MAX 2 ROAD WARRIOR!👍(One of the Best Action Movies EVER!)
That was designed by Hiller aviation. There is a museum in Redwood City that has a few other of their radical aviation designs from Hiller like the Pawnee flying platform and the VXT-8 Coleopter.
I visited that museum. It's a few miles south, down the highway, from SFO International Airport. They have one of these on display and play the video these scenes were borrowed from on a loop. I'm not sure how many were built but the unit on display was from the Marines.
The flying platform had an interesting top speed. It tilted to fly in a direction but the airflow increased lift on the leading edge, 15 or 16 MPH was top speed. At least it was stable. Part of ducted fan efficiency is lift from air across the intake edge.
Thanks for the info. I'll seriously look into this (always wanted to see a HILLER JOTNET up close and personal)
For. A sec I thought you said Hitler aviation 😂😂😂
The Hiller Aviation Museum is at the San Carlos Airport. There’s a lovely McDonald’s adjacent with a helicopter out front you can sit in.
Pilot gets shot down.
Military: lets send a larger, slower aircraft to drop off a smaller, slower aircraft.
lol...you'd think that slower aircraft (heli) could just pick up the downed pilot and skip the step of dropping a smaller heli. Kidding aside, in an active hot war, then dropping this mini heli makes sense.
@@StarrDust0 In wich scenario is the landing zone too hot for an helicopter to pick up a pilot, but not hot enought so that the pilot can get to the air dropped DIY heli, asemble it and fly out?
@@wolf310ii in a scenario where landing a rescue chopper isn't possible because they're being fired upon....but where they can drop this mini-heli and he can get to it before the enemy, and get it flying in 5 mins. It's also a smaller target. Ya there's no 'perfect situation' but this would sure beat walking....ofc the ideal case is if a chopper picks him up.
@@StarrDust0 And why should the enemy not shoot at the guy assembeling the DIY heli? If they close enought to shoot at a rescue helicopter landing, pick up the pilot and get out in less than one minute, they are close enough to shoot at someone building a heli for 5 minutes.
It would be search aircraft after air threats had been eliminated or had retreated to refuel and regroup, the downed pilot probably had to hide a while. I think Goodyear pushed an inflatable plane at the time.

I tried flying a friend's helicopter and honestly I looked like a complete idiot. There was no part of my helicopter flight that looked intentional. Having the helicopter function is the most optimistic part of the whole thing. Good luck not getting shot by the enemy the moment you get airborne.
The only positive thing is - a pro pilot could learn how to fly it 😅
Imagine, stranded on an island. You get given this. Manual included "how to fly a helicopter for dummies"

SO pilots can fly away--- designer must have been like well if they fly bombers this small thing should be like getting back on the bike.
With a range of only 50 miles, the operator would soon become part of the ocean's food chain.
These were designed by Stan Hiller for the U.S. military. One of the reasons they were not a success is that the military didn't want to train fixed wing pilots on rotorcraft.
I read three pilot training books before going to school. Do not attempt to fly a helicopter without a cfi. Certified flight instructor. You will die otherwise. It’s nothing like I had thought prior to training
Nothing like flying for your life in a freshly crashed helicopter you just had to assemble with a broken hand and 300 dudes looking for you. This thing was desinged to end up in movies. 😂

yeah, but it's meant for you to get out of enemy lines quickly. When you're behind enemy lines with enemies quickly approaching and wanting to capture you, trust me, you'd rather wanna risk your life on this one than going through all the suffering and torture you're gonna get from capture. You don't really have any other choice
Yeah, I would have to agree with the comment above mine. As someone who been in the military, amd experienced combat, he is right. I know if I was all alone, with enemy closing in on me, I was absolutely jump in that little thing and take my chances in the air. Without any hesitation or even a second thought. Even I could just fly it for 5 or 6 minutes at the top speed, that would be more than enough to get me a good several miles away and closer to friendly lines, and avoid capture. In a situation like that, being able to cover a few miles in just 5 or 6 minutes would be like having a superpower miracle.
Calls 70mph slow and wants to WALK. Calls a helicopter loud and exposed as also widely unstable, yet like every military uses helicopters for nearly everything. You are stupid, you are a joke.
Calls 70mph slow and wants to WALK. Calls a helicopter loud and exposed as also widely unstable, yet like every military uses helicopters for nearly everything. What a joke...
Considering the fact that most of the people we face nowadays honor the Geneva Convention about as well as the Japanese did in WWII, you might want to rethink that. Let me add two words as well: Hanoi Hilton.
Always ask your heli pilot if they have autorotation training.
I wish I had one. You could escape any situation.
If I was someone in need of rescuing I would be so grateful and blessed if this was dropped in especially if I were in a war zone
Unless you were a trained helicopter pilot, you would kill yourself trying to takeoff and fly away in it. This would only work for a helicopter pilot.
Fixed wing is completely different than rotorwing aircraft. A backhoe or excavator operator would be more adept at flying this than a fixed wing pilot
that's why you see the pilot running towards it. not because he is scared behind enemy lines but because he's so excited to get a present air dropped to him!
the problem with this logic is that a slow plane would drop that where a literal jet got shot down. no clue how that ever would be possible...
I'd buy one of these. I'd also fit it with a huge speaker so I could blast "Ride of the Valkyries" everywhere I went
During WW2 the Japanese had a little "Tow Chopper," that could be towed behind a ship to use as an "Observatinion Craft" looking for other observers )"
I started my career in fixed-wing aircraft and then transitioned to helicopters. I can say for certain that if you haven't been trained to fly helicopters your chance of survival in this thing is near zero.
Imagine being on the battlefield and seeing your enemy just fly away
Yes, I would be in shock and unable to operate my ak47 to shoot bullets.
So... free duck hunting practice?
Search planes and the escape would be after the battle but the area between the down pilot and safety would still be difficult to cross and likely patrolled. The downed pilot would have to hide till most of the enemy had been eliminated or simply left.

An XR-0E1 looks like SO MUCH FUN to fly!
Reminds me more than a little bit of an autogyro.
Helicopters don't just fall out of the air when they lose power! They use the wind of falling to spin the blades then reverse the pitch of the blades giving them lift and if done properly they can land without issues or damage.
That's a pretty poor explanation, you'd be better off just saying they use auto-rotation.
@jakewhite9179 except probably 20% of people know what that is, so I'm sure they get the gist with my explanation.
Do you think the U.S. military knows about this?
@@S4V4GE-IV-XX anyone who doesn't have an inkling of what autororation is won't understand your explanation, especially when it's not quite right. Reversing the pitch of the blades (lowering the collective) is the very first step, that's what helps the wind keep the blades spinning. Your explanation would in fact cause the helicopter to just fall out of the air
The rate of descent required to keep the main rotor rpm above stall speed almost guarantees damage and injuries. Auto-rotation landings almost always result in damage to the helicopter and injuries to the crew.

Planes and helicopters pros and cons:
Planes: Move faster, cant takeoff vertically, but can glide in emergency purposes.
Helicopter: Move slower, can take off vertically, but cant glide.
Helicopters auto rotate in cases of power failure, effectively allowing them to glide and can do this for a significant distance too, so yes, helicopters can glide too
@@calebmenker988 the window (altitude vs speed) where autorotation is viable is limited, though
@@calebmenker988Helicopters just glide steeply. Auto rotation requires height and speed to build up enough momentum for a safe landing. There is a height and speed below which is called the death zone as any failures won't allow a safe auto-rotation landing.
