  • "Furiosa" has the lowest box office numbers in 30 years ... how is that even possible? It barely beat out "The Garfield Movie." This is why we need to stop forcing female lead roles into male-written stories.

She is taken prisoner in the first part of the film, then sold into slavery to another warlord, does grunt work for years in The Citadel, then is mentored as a driver by Praetorian Jack for probably more years. She has survivor skills which are similar any tribal person living in a low tech society at the beginning and then is completely changed into another person by her experiences and training with the warlords. There is a real arc and progression even the reviewers on the wokephobic Film Threat commented how she is not a mary sue.

I tend to disagree - at least where "Aliens" is concerned. Ripley is essentially a "final girl" in Alien. And she isn't selected as trooper in Aliens. She's selected because she has some expertise where the monster is concerned. And when you watch carefully, she survives by her wit rather than her physical force.
While Sarah is a "final girl" as well in Terminator, she is a girl boss in Terminator 2, agreed. But not the kind of girl boss we know nowadays. She makes bad decisions, gets almost hysterical when killing Dyson, dreams of having a family - things you'll never see a girl boss do nowadays. And she gets a real beating. It's not like she's kicking the behinds of 200 lbs guys in her heels.
But I agree on the premise that nowadays you'd interpret all this as as "woke" and dismiss the whole thing on the first trailer. I have been a film buff since my early teens. Gee, I don't even want to know how much money I left at the box - let alone all the physical media. But nowadays, even when I *think* a movie is worthwhile, I'm always utterly disappointed. "Nobody" being an exception. So yes, nowadays when even the hint of "The Message" pops up, I abandon the thing instantly. I want to be entertained - I don't want to raise my blood pressure to dangerous levels.

It would be a massively talked about moment that would have gotten people going out to the theaters! Mel's return to mainstream films playing the character that put him on the map in the first place, one last time.

The problem is not female protagonists, not even in action roles. We shouldn't have to list the female (action) protagonists again and again, from Sarah Conner, Ellen Ripley, Foxy Brown, Charlie's Angels, Buffy, Xena, every Milla Jovovich role and every Kate Beckinsale role and many more, going back to the 60s and 70s, were no one had a problem.
Because #1 they weren't substitutes for a male character that had to retire for her and made a fool of before, so we...might like her more(!?), which is weird strategy. No, in some cases they even made team ups that were awesome, Xena to Hercules or Angel to Buffy, the other way around.
And more important because #2 they were "protagonists", they were likeable or at least relateable, they weren't the ones with the characteristics of villains, which again is a strange constant of modern female protagonists, and yes, Disparu is one channel that will never get tired in pointing that out, it's basically his bread and butter...

I think it’s all about marketing. The marketing in recent big budget films have been lacking. If you look at films like this, or even Mission Impossible last year, the marketing has been lackluster. I know a lot of people who I’ve spoken to had no idea it was coming out. Even films like Abigail, which had all the ingredients to be a crowd pleaser, failed. All 3 films I’ve mentioned, I’ve seen and thought they were good to great, and any other year, would have thrived. But post-pandemic has conditioned us to also wait a few weeks for a film to come out on streaming services like, combining with lackluster marketing. Lets be honest; the only films in recent memory to get big marketing is Oppenheimer, Barbie and Dune, and maybe Planet of the Apes.

This is now the problem that Hollywood has created for itself. We've had so many preachy girl boss movies that every movie with a female lead is assumed to be a girl boss, feminist agenda flick. Even if it is a good movie and NOT agenda driven, the general public will assume it is woke bait and stay away.
That said, as Lauren states here, Fury Road lost money, so why they thought making a prequel starring Furiosa would be a big draw is baffling.

Today I won't even take a second look at anything that has a diverse cast.
Because I know EVERYTHING is only about race and gender.
So the last new series I watched was "Reacher" - because the lead was a white male.
Today, I would miss out on Ripley, Blade, Janeway... - however, we all know that today none of them would be the great characters they were 30 years ago.

Furiosa IS the sin of the girl boss. There is nothing abut her that makes her different. This movies should have had a male lead. There is no excuse for it having a female lead. Women can not drive as well as men. They can not survive a beating as well as men. They can not learn to fight as well as men. They have slower reflexes, they have lower stamina. They are much weaker. Take look at formulas one racing, and com pare male and female fencing. It's getting putrid seeing film makers for some reason pout in these butch women hated by both men and women. They appeal to feminine men, and the LGBTQ community. No one else.

However, when Furiosa was getting helped by her wannabe Mad Max male partner kill the bad guys, it showed she wasn't invincible anymore for the first time (being a twist) and is probably one of the main reasons people actually ended up liking this film. Actually...*ahem*...people are sick of poorly written movies, but when they see it has a female protagonist, odds are 80% that it will be poorly written as well.
The lack of quality when pursuing this FemiNazi approach post-2018 (female totalitarianism/authoritarianism/identitarianism) has been thoroughly demonstrated by now.
The overlap between both categories (female protagonist/poorly written) is damn-near mutually exclusive, because when a writer pursues a male protagonist, you know they're more interested in telling a story than shoving a female into the lead artificially.

It become more colourful and fantasy by the time we saw Fury Road, and as pointed out, Max was a tag-along for that movie anyway. To be fair, it's not just the 'girl boss' factor (although that is a large consideration.) There's also the undeniable fact that the movie is, like it or not, just another 'Mad Max/Road Warrior' movie, and when all is said & done, all those movies are pretty much the same. You seen one, you seen 'em all. You could probably switch around the action-sequences from one movie to another & have a tough time telling 'em apart. There's nothing really new or novel there in other words. That being the case, given the choice between paying good money to watch essentially the same tired old thing all over again in a movie-theater, or staying home & saving $$$, most people apparently chose the latter. And if they really, really, really wanted to watch yet-another dumb movie about cars zooming around in the desert & blowing up for 2 hours, then they could always watch one of the old 'Mad Max' movies on streaming for a fraction of the cost of a ticket-purchase.

Okay, with the hardcore fans the film is quite beloved, though heavily criticised for its use of CGI, which was not that good. Hardcore fans knew Max wasn’t going to be in it so it certainly wasn’t a bait and switch situation. The advertising made that quite clear in fact, cause he isn’t on any poster. In fact Fury Road was accused of being a bait and switch. Fans really loved Anya in it, so she’s not the issue either. There’s a few factors involved. I strongly believe that casual viewers in general are tired of strong female leads and the advertising did show that. People were very ignorant that this wasn’t some some agenda driven film. Furiosa isn’t some very strong female lead. She’s strong, but also suffers a lot through the film because she’s no superhero. On top of that you have streaming services. People don’t like to go to the theatre anymore. If Max had a bigger role in Furiosa then of course I think it would have drawn a larger audience. People just didn’t want to see it, so it’s also a matter of prejudice, cause the story is good, the characters are very interesting cause it’s my strong opinion that this is more a Chris Hemsworth film. I’m not saying he stole the show, but he does draw a lot of attention and did a very good job at playing Dementus.

There are multiple reasons why like theater to streaming dates are now shorter, ticket prices are high, theater audience behaviors (turn off your phones pls). There has been a trend in movies not doing so well in theaters and those movies are male leads (New Apes film, Fall guy, Minisry of Gentlemanly Warfare, If) and some those movies were decent/good. Its got nothing to do with a female lead or female protagonist. Barbies was a success and so was Evil Dead Rise,Megan, . Mad Max as a brand is not as big as some people think it is; its niche. Even if they brought back Mel Gibson, it still wouldnt have made a lot of money. Road Warrior and Thunderdome were not theatrical hits compared to Mad Max 1. Fury Road is the more popular movie among the franchise.

The fact that he is not in the movie isn't a thing, most fans know max is dead a few yrs after thunderdome. His age in fury roadwould be near 80-88. Miller claims Max was age 30 in furyroad which makes no sense, kind of like Max's interceptor still being ok. Not to mention Gasoline is in full force production, even though all production dried out just before Roadwarrior till the middle. In thunderdome we did get some hope for humans, they were starting to build small city's and using methane. Down side is sometime between the end of Roadwarrior and before thunderdome, the nukes dropped. Thundome teaches us there are radioactive zones now. What Furyraod teaches us is max can't be 30yrs of age and all the children are dying from cancer tumors from radiation. This crazy fake civilization should not last long, if most people are dying from cancer. Another thing Furyroad tells us they have no gasoline problem at all, as if the 91% oil shipments Australia needs, is back in force. These people waste fuel at every moment, even in a guitar lol. Lets not talk about how much breast milk 1 woman can produce in a day x by 9 we saw. "between 100ml to 400m\700ml later after baby is born." It would take all them women yrs to fill that tanker up, plus longer depending on how much people drink in that messed up camp." milk would rot by then" .Furiosa tells us they transport water, that makes more sense, milk doesn't lol. Over 80 per cent of Australia's gas reserves and over 95 per cent of oil reserves are offshore, this makes up 9% of refined. While 91% of Australia's oil is shipped in.

You said the right thing. I don't know why the "top commentators" surrounding this topic have to be so brash and blunt with their inaccurate diagnosis of the real problem. I liked Mad Max because it surrounds the experiences of a broken shell of a man, who has lost everything, and finds a spark of redemption in his journey of a purely primal survival based-existence. This is about the least feminine archetype I could imagine, and psychologically, nobody is interested in having this type of story told from a non-existence perspective of a woman who would never live it.

It's frustration from almost a decade of woke garbage we've had to endure, so now when there's a whiff or suspicion of the agenda, people will avoid. We've had years of nothing but "Strong Female Lead" movies come out that were either preachy, condescending to males, or replacing men in their own mediums, and it got old quick. Not to mention, they're all crap movies.
Mad Max, the male lead, should've been the main focus in their next movie, not a side character. Instead, we got a side character with Max's name in the title... Fans are interested in Max in Mad Max.
My medieval fantasy is called 'Castle of Calamity' because I didn't want to name it after my main character for this very reason-I can make spinoffs at my leisure. Mad Max is a name, not a world setting, and I couldn't give two damns about Furiosa. Hell, that's part of the reason I never saw Fury Road, because I kept hearing how Max got sidelined for Furiosa, whoever that is.

Furry Road wasn’t a mega hit. It was a media darling and a hit with critics. Movie goers were not clamoring for a Furry Road prequel 9 years later. And while Furiosa might not be a girlboss flick, it is certainly girlboss adjacent. She’s a female protagonist in a male-centric franchise. Making things worse, the real star of the franchise, Mad Max, was sidelined for her in his franchise.

This was actually a brilliant movie, and it was as much about Dementus v Immortan Joe. It is a Mad Max film, as it's set within the Wasteland estabished in Mad Max lore. I typically agree with this rhetoric but this one was actually really good.

Given the poor quality writing, and over-saturation of female protagonists in recent history, we have been conditioned to see a 'bad-ass' female protagonist in a movie trailer - and assume the movie will be garbage. Thus our disinterest in Furiosa.

He shoulda just made it a miniseries/series on HBO, not advertise it as a Mad Max movie. Its just not a strong selling point of "hey remember that character that stole the show from Mad Max in his own movie? Well go see the prequel show of her in you are interested, not advertise it as a Mad Max Movie but with a different character!"

3:28- More accurately "poorly written female protagonists" Pride, Prejudice and Zombies was much better than The Princess. Look at the two leads and try to guess why.

I still can’t get over the fact that this movie is made by the same guy who gave us Happy Feet and Babe.
