    Translated, its: if you act normal, you're acting crazy enough. And Doe normaal (act normal) means some sort of, be yourself, that's enough for everyone. Don't act like you're better of someone else.
    It's a powerful mindset to be happy with yourself and less exhausting if you need to act being better. If you're better, just show it with actions and results, no talk. Like the Americans say, "talk is cheap".
    When someone brags in the Netherlands, they mostly are worthless of having an issue with their capabilities.
    We also like to create an environment with people who have capabilities that the other person doesn't have and strengthen each other.

    your spot on, on the whole doe normaal issue hes portraying, it is indeed a mentality not a thing on the spot. if you are at a party and everyone is dancing normally and u suddenly jump on the counter knocking over glasses and whatnot, that would be a doe normaal moment, we also say doe normaal, dan doe je al gek genoeg which translates to, act normal, were already crazy enough as is. which just emphasises it.

      @feluciavt 9 дней назад +6

      This is something I was looking for as well, but also "Doe normaal" isn't just about not being crazy, it's also about not letting your craziness bother other people. Stand out all you want, but don't do it in a way that interferes with other people's lives (too much), and like you said no matter what your standing is you aren't excused from following that social norm. If you start breaking it, you're definitely going to get a "doe normaal" thrown your way before long.

    • @BlacksmithTWD
      @BlacksmithTWD 9 дней назад +1

      @@feluciavt indeed, it literally refers to the Dutch norms and values applied in the Netherlands when living together as citizens in this country. It can be said to someone bragging too much just as well as some idiot walking on the bike lane while there is a sidewalk next to it. Though in the latter case "Aan de kant!" or just the ringing of the bell on the bike is more likely.

It doesn't compare chips with vegetables. Or like we Dutch say: "je kunt geen appels met peren vergelijken". You can't compare apples with pears.

    You understand 'Doe Normaal' correctly! It's about an attitude. It can be compared to the Danish 'Jante's Law', which means: you can act crazy, but do not think that you are more special than others. It is intended to slow down people who seem to feel better than others. This aims to maintain a good atmosphere in the group. "Gezellige sfeer" :-) Sometimes Dutch people are critical of this norm, because they think they underestimate each other too much. For example, Dutch movies are sometimes called un-Dutch good by the Dutch themselves. As if the Dutch, by definition, cannot create high-standard things.

    • @deadso
      @deadso 8 дней назад

      Nah, we just used to make allot of horrible movies with terrible actors, so to finally find one that is actually good is an exception to the rule. Hence, un-Dutch-like ;)

      Yes, being a Dutchman myself I also think that the 'doe normaal' attitude is akin to the Danish Jantelagen. It's a 'small village' mentality, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

    As to the Dutch whopping the sea's ass, our King has a degree in water management. We LIVE for beating the sea, without that attitude 30% of the Netherlands wouldn't even exist. Sea level rise? Screw it, we'll beat it. Even if half of Europe floods, we'll welcome everyone the the Island of the Netherlands, 300 feet below sea level, but with dry feet.
    And even if the sea somehow would win this battle, our King also has a pilote's license, so the mofo could fly us all to dry areas.
    The caps connected to the bottle is pretty much 'Doe normaal' where being not normal would being to toss the cap on the ground, instead of taking it back to the store to get the deposit you paid when you bought the bottle.
    In my (dutch) perception, 'Doe normaal, dan doe je al gek genoeg' means being yourself, not pretending to be something your not.

  • @RubentLam
    @RubentLam 9 дней назад +5

    In my opinion “Doe normaal” relates to Dutch not liking hierarchy. So, if I have a university degree and the other person has not, that should not make me high-nosed. And if you have accomplished something very special, try to remain modest. That kind of attitude.

  • @Dragons28378
    @Dragons28378 9 дней назад +6

    There are several ways "Doe normaal" can be used, for example, one way is when you're encountering something completely unexpected, like getting a new car as a gift or coming home to a house cleaned from top to bottom as a surprise , you can use "Doe normaal" as a response.
    Or as second example in some situations when someone is being incredibly annoying, rude or inappropriate, saying "Doe normaal" is more like "act normal" , like, don't be a d*** or stop acting like an a******, just behave like the rest of us.

  • @BboyKeny
    @BboyKeny 8 дней назад +2

    Full saying is: Doe normaal want dan ben je al gek genoeg.
    Which means "act normal because you're already crazy enough". So it takes into account that nobody is normal, but we do expect a level of self restraint and respectfulness when being being with and around others. So it's basically "check your behaviour because you're stepping outside of the social norms". A variant is "doe rustig", which never worked in an argument with your wife or girlfriend but we will stay try to calm her down by saying "doe rustig".

  • @InkMink

    As a dutch person yeah you are right. This is mostly an attitude not at all similiar to nails sticking out getting hammered down. This is a very western individuality embracing place. All the nails here stick out 😂 You'll find a very colorful palette of different kinds of people that stand out in their own way. "Doe normaal want dan ben je al gek genoeg" besides a mindset can also be used as a warning for stepping over your own boundaries to be something you are not (aking to just be yourself you are enough). And it can also mean don't overstep other peoples invisable comfort boundaries by acting out in a way others will be bothered by it. Like don't scream and be loud and obnoxious or don't piss on peoples doorsteps which very much happens in the weekends and that would definately be a "doe normaal" situation. Cause we all know we aren't supposed to do that it's like a calling to common sense. Women also use it as a "reallly?!" When someone brings particulary intense news. They go "neeeee doe normaal!" 😂 so I get that it can be a little confusing and vague. Im not even sure if I got it completely but I tried 😂

    I think that people from outside the Netherlands misunderstood the "doe normaal" idea. It is perfectly fine to stand out and be better than others. It is more about how you deal with it. Bragging about it or looking down on others because they perform less is what is talked about. So you are an ace in IT, or Law, or Science... so what.. others might have skills you don't have. In the end, we are all needed in this society, the scientist is not more or less important than the baker or the garbage collector. That is the idea behind "doe normaal". Sure.. celebrate your achievements but don't go around being elitist. :)
    Notable Dutch inventions beside Bluetooth and WiFi: The Submarine, The Firehose, The compact Cassette, the CD and DVD and BlueRay. the Micro AND Telescope, the Eye test, "Fair Trade", Hardcore and Hardstyle, triangulation, The Mercator (world) map and the Atlas, the Continental drift hypothesis, Python, and that is just a "short" list of inventions and innovations.

Normal = "act like everybody else does". Crazy means: "be yourself, act like you!! You're YOU, so you're NOT "normal". In my opinion, normal and crazy don't exist. When a "normal" bloke says something about you being crazy, it's just him being restricted to his "normal" ways seeing you doing something outrageous in his or her mind, but what he or she's actually commenting on is his or her own VIEW upon the bloke they're talking about, so... nothing's personal!! the Full phrase "Doe normaal , want je doet al gek genoeg" (Act normal because you are already acting crazy enough) It’s a phrase that can be used as a reaction to a wide range of strange (and sometimes not so strange) behaviors from others. It can be used for anything from a minor infraction of an unwritten social rule to the kind of truly crazy behavior that might get you committed. Because of this it might not always be easy to understand exactly why someone started shouting ‘doe normaal’ at you (unless you were doing something that was really obviously weird, in which case they were probably right and you should stop). This has nothing to do with inventions because we think outside the box to use the inventions more efficient then normal.

In short it means 'don't show off because nobody cares'. It's not that we don't appreciate your invention or intelligence but we care more about your human interaction. Most people here don't flash their wealth even if they are very wealthy. Celebraties like to just walk around here because they can, even without security. The microscope but also the telescope. One person to give credit is Cornelis Drebbel who grinded lenses. They were used in Lipperhey's telescope.
    Drebbel also invented the submarine. He went to London to test it in the Thames.

    But you can also say "doe normaal" (with a surprised face) after someone has told something exciting, but then with a ! at the end. ''The technology itself was developed by the Dutchman Jaap Haartsen, who worked for the Swedish Ericsson at Nieuw-Amsterdamsestraat in Emmen.[1] The name Bluetooth refers to the Viking king Harald Blåtand, who introduced Christianity in Scandinavia'' (Wikipedia)

    When he uses it i can only understand it that he has some ''political' doe normaal on some points, and that goes on some ''left'' solitions to problems, like the nutriscore, its rigged by the big producers, doritos is a E, but they add ''full wheat'' or ''proteinepowder'' onto unhealtthy stuff to rig the system ( source fun to watch is ''keuringsdienst van waarde'' on the nutriscore )
    And with the plastic cap staying on, it was a solution ''coca cola'' started, and now its wrapping his 0,5l petbottles in plastic per 4, and it was invented to ''prevent plastic waste''. and spoiler alert, it doesnt help, so ''doe normaal'' is used a lot against extreme left, who gets a lot of pro media attention, and most dutch are kind of tired of hearing about Extinction rebellion, antifa or some other extreme's giving dumb solutions to dumb problems.

  • @thezetes

    You understand it perfectly fine, but for humoristic purposes Sky's interpretation is totally allowed!
    About the Doritos, they initially received a D nutritious score, so they changed their production to receive the B score.
    That might be actually the craziest!

    You are correct Charlie. Whatever greatness you achieve, we Dutch will always appreciate some form of modesty when you do. We had prime ministers who came to work by bike, for instance, and millionaires living in regular old housing with no plans to move to a villa, stuff like that. No need to flaunt your amazing self constantly, don't show off is what "Doe normaal, dan doe je al gek genoeg" entails. Whatever you are, even if you are king to our country, you will know that a little modesty goes a long way. It also entails displaying certain levels of pragmatism, social tolerance, plain old common sense and doing whatever wild stuff you need to do privately (if you really must).

    You nailed it, "doe normaal, dan doe je al al gek genoeg" (act normal, you'll be doing stange enough) is a social thing. People want each other to blend in, without anyone playing the first violin. Dutch are very egalitarian. It's possible and even appreciated if people walk up to their boss to discuss matters if they think he/she is wrong about something.

    My take on the underground trash cans :
    You'll see those in high population density cities, cause imagine what that is like, a building with 4 floors of each 2 apartments, that is 8 households, each household has 3 garbage containers, orange for plastic/alu cans, green for bio/garden and grey for 'anything that doesn't belong in the other 2'.
    8 Households x 3 containers, that's 24 cans on wheels.
    TWENTY FOUR CONTAINERS !
    Where do you put them ?
    The streets would be lined with garbage containers, everywhere you look.
    That is not how we want our surroundings to look like.
    Solution : Put them in the ground, done, no more containers needed.
    It is just practical.

    You don´t live in the Netherlands and you grasp the idea better. Pride for example isn´t doe normaal. It is just about acting/doing over the top. I am not religious.. but I think it is Calvinistic.
    Bottle cap is introduced about one or two years ago, because of european laws. We bring 99% of our bottles back to the store to get back our deposit. 99% of those bottles stille have their cap, otherwise your reusable bag gets dirty. But in Italy and those countries they just throw bottles away. In Italy they have a nag of throwing the bottle cap in nature. So now we have those irritating bottle caps because in some european countries they pollute and don´t have statiegeld/deposit. Very annoying. They should introduce the deposit/statiegeld/pfand system everywhere.

    It's not that we don't want to stand out, I think we do want to be exceptional and successful, but for the the right reasons. You don't want to be known for being dramatic and acting over the top, which would be "niet normaal", you want to be known for being good at what you do. Again it's about who you ARE and how you ACT, that should be something to be modest about, but try to be good at what you DO aka your job/study/hobby etc. And even if you are doing well, you shouldn't boast about it. That means you're acting as if you're too big for your britches, which is "niet normaal".

    "doe normaal, dan doe je al gek genoeg" literally is says "act normal, then you are acting crazy enough". Shortened to "doe normaal" "act normal".We use this to correct somebody's behavior when they do or say something that is considered outside of standard values. For example, when someone is picking on somebody who can't defend themselves, they will be corrected by somebody by hearing, "doe normaal" in a more ferm way. If somebody is making there presents very clear (this mostly happens with kids), they will hear somebody say "doe maar normaal, dan doe je al gek genoeg.

    "Doe normaal, dan doe je al gek genoeg" is the full phrase. And the 2nd part is usually implied, although if someone is really annoying, we'll say a more straight forward intended "doe normaal" too. Or sometimes even on the other side of the coin, as an expression of being amazed by something. The full phrase is indeed more like you interprete it Charlie, 'you do you, but keep it real'.

    Hi, Dutchy here! I think Sky is confusing our actions with our attitude about the actions. "Doe normaal" means "Be humble".
    We can do incredible things, but it's frowned upon to brag about it. The difference in attitude is, if Americans see someone pull up in a Ferrari, they admire that person and say "Whoa look at that cool guy in his awesome sports car!" Here, we look at such a person with a side eye and say "Pfff look at that show-off in his midlife crisis vehicle, what a douche." That's the difference.

    Yeah.. the Dutch invented a few things and they always love to pat themselves on the back if (for example) an highly engineered bolt, a screw or some other minor detail is they thought of/created is used in a foreign (not specificly american) spaceshuttle.
    While Germans have invented so much more, for example the diesel engine, the contact lens, airbags, helicopters, highways etc etc.

  • @DavesDeepDives

    As mentioned by a lot of people, you are correct in your assumption that "Doe normaal" is an attitude. Basically, the fact that he didn't know the Dutch invented the stock exchange and helped create Bluetooth and WiFi and had to look it up is a prime example of this. Just because you did this and that, or that you are an actor or whatever, doesn't mean you are better than someone else.

  • @HereIamG

    It's to deescalate a situation because someone has a bad attitude, like causing a fight. Don't become a crazy person, that's why we say: "Doe Normaal Dan Doe Je al Gek Genoeg". Translated: "Be normal, you already are crazy enough" (by being normal). Furthermore, we are innovative and direct people. Of course we have small innovations and really big ones we are more known for.

    Nutri-Score is not a measure of healthiness. It's how much nutritional value the contents of the package has based on fixed weight. The actual portion size is up to you.
    The invention of Bluetooth was due to the financer of the development being the Swedish phone company Ericsson. Jaap Haartsen, the guy who invented it and worked for said company was Dutch.

    It's crazy that for someone who has never been here and doesn't have family here, you understand the concept of ''doe normaal want dat is al gek genoeg'' this good. What you say is exactly right. In the Netherlands we do a lot of crazy things but this sentence means it's okay to do crazy things just don't brag about it. It's about the idea that the accomplishments of 1 Dutch person are the accomplishments of all Dutch persons.

    Doe normaal is indeed an attitude. Do not feel or act more important than others. The examples shown in the video are about people solving problems and doing good business, which is accepted and encouraged. Claiming fame for it isn't; notice that nobody knows any of these people's names. It's always just 'some Dutch guy did this...' or even more nondescript '...The Netherlands did this...'
    I think this attitude is very antithetical to US customs, and it is why some cultural imports from the US are so terribly awkward and out of place in NL, such as DEI and pride parades. They are centered around putting people on a pedestal, about singling people out based on something other than merit. It is the opposite of 'doe normaal'.
