  • Continuing our coverage on mid-size family sedans, we're taking a look at the 2018 Volkswagen Passat Highline and 2018 Honda Accord 1.5L Touring. What features do these two cars share, and what makes them different? We find out!
    Before watching this Showdown, we strongly recommend watching the TestDrive Spotlight episode for each car to find out all the features and our thoughts about them individually, as this Showdown does not cover everything and is meant to be a comparison between these two popular mid-size family sedans.
    2018 Honda Accord 1.5L Touring: • 35 Years of US Accords...
    2018 Volkswagen Passat Highline: • 8 Years & Counting | 2...
    Both cars offer similar features inside and out, but like any Showdown there are some differences that make each one standout in it's own right. The Accord is all-new for 2018 marking the car's 10th generation. With the fully loaded Touring model you get LED headlights and fog lights, front and rear parking sensors, leather seating, heated and ventilated front seats, heated outboard rear seats, heated steering wheel, an 8" HondaLink infotainment screen which support Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM Radio, and built-in navigation.
    The Accord also features a colour heads-up display, backup camera, two driver memory options, front power seats, a power glass moonroof, automatic dual-zone climate control, and Qi wireless phone charging which works with the iPhone 8 Plus and Samsung Galaxy Note8.
    The 2018 Volkswagen Passat Highline is optioned with the R-Line appearance package and Driver's Assistance package. On the exterior the VW has LED front headlights but the R-Line package deletes the fog lamps. Parking sensors are located on the front and back along with corner sensors to aid with the Park Assist feature. Automatic power folding mirrors are found on the Passat, along with a leather interior, front and rear heated seats, a 6.33" navigation screen with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and SiriusXM Radio.
    The rear seating space is also much larger on the Passat, making it idea for people looking for a more full-size sedan experience while keeping it under $40,000.
    Our Showdown will compare these two and crown one a winner, so that if you're in the market for a new mid-size sedan you'll have a better idea about either car.

      @Joe Joseph Been there done that with a standard shift car in NY. You seem to know little about VW to make such a blanket statement. I am on my 4th VW with 104,000 miles the other 3 before this one also had over 100,000 Miles. ZERO problems.

    I happen to drive a 2014 Passat 2.5 SE, and that car, also being my 3rd Passat so far, offers everything I need: the space, ease of use, and driving experience. While the new accord is a beautiful car and I wouldn’t mind owning one at some point, I just can’t wait for the new VW Arteon to enter the market. That car brings the looks, proper powertrain and the tech to the Passat (it is based on the Euro-spec Passat) lineup. And accord will not be able to beat that for me.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  6 лет назад +1

      Well the Arteon is a full-size car, so it wouldn't compete with the Accord anyway. But we are curious to see the car when it hits the market out here.

      Perpetual Radio Networks
      Well, true. Or is it actually, I wonder. VW considers the Arteon model above the Passat, but technically (underneath and on the inside) it is still based on the Passat, again the Euro Speced one. Also when we look on the dimension, the Arteon 8mm shorter than the NMS Passat and only 1cm longer than the current Accord. Anyways, very good material, and I would be really pleased to see how the new Accord compares to the 2018 Buick Regal Sportback.

    Passat any day. Bought my 2014 SE w/roof with 1.8 EA888 new. I've driven 116,627 trouble free miles.
    Build quality on V.W. has much more solidity. Even the door hinges are made from forged steel, vs. pressed steel.
    I service my car faithfully. Just had pads, rotors, and brake fluid flushed and replaced. Rear brakes were original, as ARE the wiper blades, plugs and ignition coils! Yes at 116,627 miles!
    Also had coolant system flushed and filled. Second transmission service, pan dropped, gasket, strainer and fluid replaced. Work performed by V.W. Master tech.
    Recently popped in Honda and drove this Honda. Great Gadget/tech car. Rides ok, but not refined in comparison, and no where close to the substantial feel of the Passat.
    My 7th V.W., including a 2011 German built GTI, and my USA Tennessee built Passat still has zero squeaks and rattles. Best and most reliable car Ive owned including Honda, Toyota, Ford.
    A solid road warrior that feels substantive, not like a band aid box on wheels.
    Thats been my first hand experience.

    For me it always comes down to seating comfort 1st. Can I sit in for hours at a time if needed and still be comfortable. I bought a 2015 Passat SEL and am thrilled with it still at 35,000 miles. The seats are amazingly comfortable for the long haul. Having said that, the 1.8T that is in my car is nearly silent. It is not ultra powerful, but it is smooth, efficient, powerful enough and like I said, silent. I went and test drove a new 2018 with the 2.0 liter; and it is loud. I did not find it very smooth either. I decided to wait, despite huge rebates in place.

    I would say VW PASSAT has 'intelligent beauty' . it'll last for quite some time. But Honda & like most Japanese marks, is too 'pop-culture' when comes to styling & design. It look's pretty at first then after awhile, it looks boring & out of fashion. No 'evergreen' kinda look at all. (...and the 2018 Honda civic type-R is even uglier!!!)

      This is not true at all. It only appears that way because the Volkswagen barely ever updates its design, whereas Honda updates its designs frequently. The 2018 accord has a very edgy yet modest and nice design, whereas the VW looks like it was made for people who wear crocs.

    Nice review. I have a 2017 Passat 1.8 TSI. I'm an older guy (65) that has come to appreciate comfort and room over sports models. My wife and I drove round trip to California from Ohio last year, and I highly recommend the Passat. Head and legroom is generous (I'm 6'3") and the seats are supportive and comfortable. Highway driving is smooth and quiet, and passing large trucks and crosswinds have little effect. In the mountains, the torque from the turbo made the steepest grades effortlessly. The trunk is quite deep and there was room to spare. The controls, especially the info-mation stuff, is easy to use, and you don't need to keep referencing the user's manual to figure it out. A tech-twigit would probably prefer the Honda, but I like the understated looks and simplicity of the VW. As of this writing (April 2020), I've got 39k on the clock and zero issues.

    It is interesting to know the variations of the Passat line up in different countries. Our 2018 Passat 2.0 TSI in Brunei is the EA888 engine frm the Golf GTI producing 220hp/250ft lb torque mated to a 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG). It is based on the new MQB modular platform which is stiffer, lighter. The digital instrument cluster is very bright and multi-functional including putting up yr navigation on the big screen. It comes with a pop-up HUD. Nappa leather seats. It comes with Dynamic Chassis Control. The same features u find in the Golf GTI. Handling-wise is great thanks to the new lighter and stiffer platform (same platform as the GTI). It doesnt feel underpower, excellent brakes overall. But if i have to choose, i'd get the Passat Variant (estate) as it is more functional for me who recently taken up woodworking as a weekend hobby.

    The Honda is my preference, even though the 1.5t is known for gas filling the oil pan due to blowback. This seems to be a problem in colder climates where the engine never maintains operational temps long enough to burn off the excess gas. I also know Honda performance guys prefer the 1.5 to the 2.0 as it can be modified more reliably.

    Are the Canadian rear seats different than the American versions? Per spec sheets the rear on the Accord is larger (but I imagine headroom the Accord is behind).
    As for comparing these vehicles, I agree it's a fair comparison because my best friend and I were looking for new sedans and he cross-shopped these two. In the end he enjoyed the refined and understated design of VW and there were more incentives. I went with the Accord 2.0. I've driven my friend's VW and I think that's the better quiet drive whereas the Accord was a bit more fun due to its low end torque and tech.

    I bought the Passat in 2016 brand new, I have 136,644 km. Already and I notice that this vehicle I have to add oil in the motor and I’m not happy about it because I threw my Honda Accord 2003 with 644,000 km and I never add oil into it, I never have any issue about motor.
    Now it’s up to you to judge which car is better!

    Just bought a 2018 Passat last week (35,000 mi)! So far I'm loving it. AND it's still under warranty. That year VW gave a 7 year, 85,000 mile (or something like that) warranty. My last car was a 2000 Buick LeSabre limited (great great car - still see lots on road even though they discontinued them in 2005, which was stupid). Coming from such a low tech car, I really didn't want such a high tech car, but you really don't have a choice today. I'm sure I won't use most of that tech. (BTW, I'm 73 - old school for sure! ;-) So far I know how to drive it, play the radio and play a CD. Baby steps....
    Oh, and I really didn't want a CVT trans, so no Honda. And the Passat looks a lot better (IMO) than the Honda. I guess some like that big high screen sitting on the dash (and displays on the windshield -- I'm not one of them.

    I test drove both the 2017 Accord and Passat prior to buying and my choice was the Passat. It had a more quality feel than the Accord overall . Better looking better ride and more responsive. The Accord makes noise when the accelerator is pressed but not much change in movement for a while. The noise of the engine and cvt is a very unpleasant drone. The Accords wheels were hideous and a deal breaker for me. I didn't spend much time with the Accords infotainment system but it didn't seem as user friendly as the VW's. The nearest dealer to my house sells both Hondas and VWs and I switch between the brands frequently. I planned to get a Honda this time but the VW was far superior so I got a VW again. Maybe next time Honda.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  5 лет назад +2

      The Passat isn't an awful car, it's just really dated. We're a little disappointed VW is keeping the same Passat into 2020 with just a microscopic facelift. This generation Passat has been out since the 2011 model year, it's time for an update. Aside from that, VW also removed some features for 2018 like homelink and the analogue clock yet kept the price the same. Navigation is also very dated, and overall engine performance isn't good for the size of the vehicle. We don't hate the Passat, it works for a lot of people, but the Accord is forward-facing while the Passat is clinging onto the past.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  6 лет назад

      The Camry was nice, especially if you don't care about navigation. It had a good mix of features and styling, not to mention that 301 horsepower engine. The Camry would have been higher in our list, and won the Showdown we did on it if it offered proper navigation and ventilated seats. Toyota announced Apple CarPlay for the Corolla a few weeks ago, we haven't heard if it's a retroactive update for cars like the Camry, or if Android Auto is part of the mix.

    The one very odd, confusing thing they changed from the 2017 and older years that I hate on the 2018 Passat is removing the analog clock above the infotainment system on SE trims and up, it's only replaced by a plastic "PASSAT" badge and I feel it removes the luxury and further ages the interior, not to mention, it makes that portion look hideous. I think you can only get the analog clock on the base S trim.
    Although I like the Passat and it's 6 year-old design has aged well, I think that change is odd considering many automakers would just not offer it on base trims and only offer it on high-end trims, I just don't get it.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  5 лет назад

      We're not sure why they decided to remove the clock also, that Passat badge is really useless. I'm pretty sure they removed it, and HomeLink due to overall cost cutting. East features to cut while keeping the price the same, to help boost the bottom line ever so slightly.

      A good majority of cars need to have the doors locked prior to the remote starter activating, even if the doors are already locked. That’s not the problem here, when the door is opened on the VW during a remote start the engine shuts off, defeating the entire purpose of pre-conditioning the vehicle in the first place.

    • @tnguyen2298
      @tnguyen2298 6 лет назад

      I would consider the larger 2.0T engine if it wasn't for the electronic gear selector. I've read opinions/reviews on electronic gear selectors and this is what one had to say about the Acura's gear selector that's similar to the Accord - www.cars.com/articles/carscom-editors-sound-off-on-electronic-gear-selectors-1420683874162/
      Cars.com's editors test drive nearly every new car that hits the market, and we've encountered just about every type of gear selector. But among all the conventional console- and steering-column-mounted shift levers, pushbutton transmissions, rotary shift knobs and spring-return levers, some of us found the setup in the 2016 RLX the most frustrating.
      Its selector is a smallish, vertically oriented strip on the driver's side of the center console. It has seven different buttons for different functions - each with its own shape and unique positioning affecting how it is pushed.
      Top to bottom, the selector includes:
      A narrow, rectangular button for Park
      An indented, V-shaped button for Reverse that the driver pulls rearward like a trigger
      Another rectangular button for Neutral
      A large circular button for Drive
      A narrow, rectangular, dimpled button for Sport mode
      A large, square, upward-pull switch for the parking brake
      A small, thin button for the hill-hold function that keeps the car from rolling when stopped in Drive
      With all of those different shapes and functions requiring different actions to activate them, our editors never got comfortable with the electronic gear selector. Every time we wanted to pull out of a parking space forward or in reverse, or put the car in Park, we had to stop for a couple of beats to make sure we were pressing the right button and that the transmission had indeed shifted into the gear we wanted. It was like the Groundhog Day edition of our What Does This Button Do? story series - one that repeats over and over again without an answer.

    When you drive the 2 L touring model that actually Compares in price point to this Volkswagen the Accord hands-down takes the trophy! Honda has way better maintenance costs when you start having to put some money into it.
    I love German engineering don't get me wrong, but I can get a stage 2 hondata tune that'll bring that honda 2L turbo up to almost 300 horsepower it puts an even bigger smile on your face😊

      We've seen the 2.0L Accord in action, it destroyed us in a drag race with the Buick Regal GS we featured a couple weeks back, and the Accord was completely stock. It's a very underrated engine!

    I bought a low mileage used 2013 VW CC 4 Motion, fully loaded, most expensive vehicle VW makes outside of that big SUV, in 2015. Drive it regularly, sometimes hard. Have put in nothing but routine maintenance and premium Shell fuel, expensive yes, but I knew that going in. Not a single problem, love the VR-6 motor though it's a little thirsty it's smooth as silk. Great in the winter in Ohio.
    I love it, very satisfied. I had owned nothing but American and Japanese vehicles prior, including a couple Hondas, which I liked. My next vehicle will be VW's CC replacement, forget the name off the top of my head. Arteon, maybe.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  6 лет назад

      Glad to hear it! The Arteon is VW's next full-size sedan, but I'm not sure if it's a direct replacement for the CC. We haven't done any research on either car, but the CC is considered a mid-size vehicle, I believe?

    • @gfff3400
      @gfff3400 6 лет назад +1

      Not certain but I believe the Arteon is VW's replacement for the CC. I bought my CC because I finally wanted a top of the line German car but could not afford anything but a basic BMW or Merc, never cared for Audi.So I bought a lightly used CC 4 Motion and could not be more happy with it. The little things, confident braking, steering, suspension, the heated/cooled/massaged seats, engine. Yes it's not perfect, and the maintenance and fuel is expensive but it is a well engineered machine and I will purchase the Arteon when available.However if the Accord V-6 was available with 4WD I would definitely consider it, if not prefer it. Acura's are WAY overpriced.My CC 4Motion kills it on ice and snow.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  6 лет назад +1

      We'll have to see if we can find one of these to feature then! I think both the CC and Arteon have that 'coupe' design to them, like the Mercedes CLS-Class. Either way, we'll add them both to our list to feature! Glad to hear you're enjoying yours!

    I’m looking for a newer Passat than my 2008 Passat Kormfort with the V6. Volkswagen has taken away the V6 engine on the new ones and kept the 2.0 liter four cylinder turbo! Volkswagens are n’t as reliable as the Hondas. Passats have good power with 2.0 liter four turbo but the V6 would have less gas mileage but less stain I think.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  4 года назад

      The big benefit of VW's inline 4 engines is fuel economy, we didn't do our controlled testing with this Showdown but I'd say the Passat would end up being more fuel efficient, but reliability is where it would be let down.

    VW seriously needs to improve their interior design compared to today’s standard. I dont know why they are going with the same interior design with minimal change. 2018 accord has seriously modified their interior look that makes it more eye soothing compared to old passat similar interior design. If the make it upto todays trend then passat will be my all time choice ✌🏻

It also looks miles better,far more elegant, and classy, those taillights on the accord are ridiculous lol designed by a 5 year old.

      Unfortunately it's due to the frame rate of our cameras, the LED lights create that effect when the camera's shutter isn't fully in sync. I believe something like the Canon 5D Mk. IV is able to adjust for this and clean it up.
