Female pole vaulters, my goodness the way they are built. But I really enjoy the actual sport now as well. Watching these elite female pole vaulters compete is amazing.

Because they don’t want to wear themselves out on heights that they know they can clear so they start later to conserve energy for some of the bigger jumps
Each athlete can actually choose at what height they want to come in at depending on each jumper's capability. Obviously if a jumper has never jumped higher than let's say 4.55 in their life they are not gonna come in at 4.55 , they will enter at a lower height and work their way up. If a jumper knows that they can jump and clear 4:65 easily as a first bar (like Stefanidi did at 19:28) then you do that in order to conserve your energy. Then there are athletes who might be comfortable with a higher bar but want to come in at a smaller height cause they feel that they perform better with warming up with those smaller jumps (like Sandi Morris did) and then tackle the bigger heights. It all comes down to each vaulters ability and confidence.
