My question is since polyester rope is tested for tensile strength using a single line, would using polyester rope weaved through drilled holes in wood to form a sort of bed hammock structure, increase its tensile strength? In case this is confusing, imagine a bed made out of the legs and side support beams with an empty middle, and now you fill the middle with many lines of polyester rope looping through holes drilled in the wood on the sides - does that now hold more weight than a single line trying to pull up something heavy? Does the weight get distributed somewhat or does it not because it's still part of the same one rope? I want to know if an 8mm polyester rope I'm looking at purchasing can hold more weight this way than the approx. 400kg it is rated for. Normally I'd just assume this would hold more weight but I've already come across things that surprised me such as bends and knots in nylon reducing its strength, hence the question.
You say that polyester ropes are not favoured for industrial use, though excellent in terms of abrasion, heat and acid durability. Can you say what the drawback is which makes it less suitable for industrial applications? Thanks
Sure! For most industrial applications, many rigging professionals will opt for nylon core, 100% nylon, and poly/nylon blends over full polyester ropes. Polyester has slightly less flexing endurance, meaning that the rope will likely need to be replaced sooner when exposed to the same repeated action than the ropes mentioned above. Polyester does have its place in industrial settings as an on-hand backup, and general purpose since it's generally more economical than nylon ropes. Hope that answers your question!
