Failing to enforce the law for many years people think even if it is illegal the Police wont do anything so they buy them or build their own. Practically every just eat and uber delivery cyclist is on an illegal bike and the Police walk and drive past them everyday and do nothing. If they are going to allow them for food delivery to keep the cost down for those that can afford takeaways they need to change the law. If not they should get them of our roads. The law relating to PEV's is ridiculous.
There was a proposed law change by the previous government allowing for an increase upto 500w motor and allowing provision for throttle assist. I personally think it’s a sensible law and one would go one step further allowing the bikes to go 20mph on Roads. I think this will actually decrease road traffic accidents as slow moving bicycles travelling up hills etc are more likely to cause an accident. Local by laws limiting speeds in cities and towns fair enough, but for commuting I think 20mph is sensible. We want to be encouraging our citizenry to take healthy lifestyle options, not dissuading them. Just an opinion of course.

The law needs to be changed to allow higher speed e bikes with a motorbike licence, insurance and mot. At the moment it is pretty much impossible to register legally a higher wattage bike. Firstly... ask the copper how many amps his kettle at home draws! I ride an 52v 750w ebike with a throttle and itll do 40mph easily with a little slope but that doesn't mean i ride it flat out or even use the throttle, nor is it a fire hazard as this is the fourth year ive been using it. I live in a low emissions zone and can't afford a car that i can use so at 55 years old an ebike is perfect especially when the kit cost £780. Noy the ridiculous £5300 that sucker paid.
Yea, build one with a torque sensor and gear it nice and high, no need for a throttle then.
@@Phil8219 I'm happy to just use the throttle to have smooth starts as the pedal assist kicks in with full power, I'm assuming you know that?
Would I need to get an aftermarket controller for the bafang, which I know are available, I'm planning on getting one on an Bafang HD as I'm using an BBS02 at the moment. That's a mid drive.
BTW when you say gear it 'nice and high', are you meaning for high speed, which would mean gearing it low, or high for acceleration?
Failing to enforce the law for many years people think even if it is illegal the Police wont do anything so they buy them or build their own. Practically every just eat and uber delivery cyclist is on an illegal bike and the Police walk and drive past them everyday and do nothing. If they are going to allow them for food delivery to keep the cost down for those that can afford takeaways they need to change the law. If not they should get them of our roads. The law relating to PEV's is ridiculous.
Because your cops don't carry guns
They will have to change the law before too long.
Plus, they don't do anything about bike theft because it's not seen as worth the time and cost compared to a car
@@ObiDanKinobi this is a good opinion
There should be laws against riding and listening to loud music down your ear hole, you need to be able to hear emergency vehicles

Why not just ban them totally for importation?

This is BS. When theres no load on the motor it will spin fast. The real test is how fast the bike can go with rider.
the motor should cut out at 15.5mph and in this case it didnt
The give away was the throttle/switch ,, which went passed 3.8 MPH (walk assist)
but throttle twist then went well past the legal 15 MPH (cutout) without "pedal assist" ,
you can go 25 MPH as long as not "pedal assisted " your own 👉🏻 leg power to assist to go 20/25 MPH
(without motor assisting at 16 MPH or more ,= motor cuts out at 15MPH) 👌

The law needs to be changed to allow higher speed e bikes with a motorbike licence, insurance and mot. At the moment it is pretty much impossible to register legally a higher wattage bike. We should align with the Netherlands and the USA. If ridden safely with the right skills like a motorbike rider these are environmentally friendly forms of transport. I have participated in a study for the uk government on this and our laws are currently outdated.
A lot of people want stop for someone waving them down because they could be criminals trying to steal your bike, the police officer should know that.
Even if it's clearly a couple of police officers?
@michelles2299 anyone can wear a high vis vest and say their police. Only when stopping and getting close you can tell and by then you've been stabbed
Ridiculous Just stopping working class people not criminals

Why not just seize the back wheel/hub if it’s over powered? Why seize and destroy the entire bike just because one easily removable component is overpowered?
Maybe even donate the seized bike frames to a bike charity that can fit them with 250w (legal) hubs?
The UK government has always been and will always be incredibly backwards in its thinking…
It's a deterrent.
@@JohnSnow-vf8jo deterrents are only affective against those who are already fearful of the law. Once they’ve scared all the commuters into either not cycling at all or spending thousands on a new bike - you’re still left with the little roadmen types that are gonna run around on 50mph surrons - which let’s face it here, are the main offenders in the e-bike world (next to deliveroo fat tyre bikes).
Regardless - the bike frames could still easily be refitted with 250w hubs and either donated to charity or sold and the money reinvested into the public pocket and the government still gets to use its little scare tactics and bullying to take even more liberties off its people - don’t worry haha
So you want the police to run their own mechanic shop? Start putting bikes up on stands, pulling out motors and disconnecting cables and batteries? That’s a bit unlikely. Even bike shops dont want to work on these things because they’re sketchy.

Makes you question people's survival skills really if you can fly along a path on an e-bike and no thinks hmm that doesn't seem right.
This will make it more dangerous for citizens as they won't use ebike to snatch people's phones, and then they will approach people with zombie knives to rob people

I eventually realised that he/she's wearing earphones , or those fluffy things on the ears must be headphones. Now and then, when they have looked over their shoulder whilst crossing the road, they've been startled by my presence so close.
But dont the headphones deprive a rider of one of their senses for identifying and establishing risk to themselves and others. They should be outlawed for awareness ground alone
Nope, you rely on sight to be aware of surroundings. Deaf people can drive.

These ebikes can still be ridden legally on the roads and the setting can be adjusted for private land use.
This is a legal argument to prevent seizure..

Better just get a 250 cc bike if you stay in the city, then to be harassed by pigs on push bike
I live in London and get around perfectly fine on my 50cc moped lol. I have been overtaken by these bikes in the video quite often which is always amusing. I have the license to use it because I passed back when everyone got handed a moped license automatically with a car pass.

Whats gets me is they complain about e bikes that do more than 15mph but end of the day i pedal a normal mtb around my town and i can easily do more than 15mph with just my legs so what ya gnna do to people that are doing exessive speeds on a normal bike cos if i crash its still gunna hurt. Yes that first bike is illegal, 250W is the legal limit, and it has to be pedal assist, and then only to 15.5mph. These aren't the bikes being used by the thieves, they are using electric "motorbikes", Surrons, Talarions etc, very different things altogether.

Why don’t this just restrict the bikes / scooters and then auction them off as legal EV’s. Use the money to stop knife crime and phone theft. Put it to good use rather than destroying millions of pounds of goods.
The regulations for EBikes is not able to be policed effectively. So, de-regulate the bikes. But fine riders extreamly heaverly when they cause any 3rd party injury or use them in any form of crime.
Throttle is legal its called walk assist
5000kg, he claims it's 100kg because he believes he can lift 100kg XD except bikes can be legally heavy as there is no weight limit. This is what happens when an idiot never reads legislation and doesn't even know about laws he wants to question. He just believes that the bike is illegal because it's heavy.

Firstly... ask the copper how many amps his kettle at home draws! Secondly... they should seize Ferraris/Astons purely because THEY CAN DO EXCESS of 150mph... point is just cause it can go fast doesn't mean it will. And they should regulate stopping riders for breaking the law instead of wasting everyone's time...
those cops are wrong the law was changed round about april and your now allowed 750watt motor but it must still be restricted
Now time for all delivery drivers not paying tax
Lesson learnt... Paint over hubs that say wattage maybe use a sticker or respray them saying 250w and dont use a speedo
Yeah that's what I did. Apparently legally if it says 250w then that's what it is regardless whether it is or not. And I removed the throttle so they can't do that stupid lift and spin test.
So regulate them better. But no just make it illegal. As someone with disabilities, i need the throttle only, so i can go on bike rides with my kids. The bike is 250w.
Do these officers give the money back after seizing these ebikes?
They are expensive bikes...
high wattage motor is not an issue if they don't ride above the speed limit. It only helps them get off after a light or going up hill.
Oh ffs, lets have a nanny state that puts us all in psych ward clothes and locks us in a pillow room because we cant be trusted with things, rather than deal with the root cause... criminals. 😂
