My number one voice of all time. She cuts directly to your core and she has NEVER fallen off. Singing songs in the original keys decades later. A national treasure.
What I liked was that FINALLY we got to hear a woman covering this song who was NOT simply trying to imitate Jennifer Holliday's version. Gladys sang the song as herself. Bravo for that!
This is my very first time EVER seeing this clip...and I applaud Ms. Knight on that beautiful rendition of Jennifer Holliday's song. The mood and the tone are exactly what the song was meant to have. Not taking NOT ONE NOTE, PITCH, TONE OR KEY away from Jennifer's way of delivering the song because Jennifer put her stank on it and sealed it up to be unmatched. But Gladys simply made it sound like a torched love song... I LOVED IT.
She's absolutely the most amazing in this world no woman can sing that song after her. They can try and maybe even hold a note as long but they will never be her or sound better
Gladys Knight always brings it home. And she has perfect control at all times. Songs don't get out of hand as they do with so many singers. Gladys Knight is just a "PRO"
Alright Miss Knight, truly beautifully talented. Still after all this time. Hey she's 76, now and still sounds so good. Her voice is strong. God Bless, on and on.
She has no equal. The true Empress of Soul. She totally inhabits the song and wrings every drop of emotion out of every note. No words are wasted or thrown away. Today's Divas could learn a lot from Empress Gladys. With the exception of the Jennifers, is there anybody around who can sing like that?
@@tanyabartley2010 IT WAS A NIGHT TO REMEMBER/...ON MY TWIN BROTHER'S GRAVE.....ONE GUY JUMPED UP IN THE MIDDLE OF HER SINGING A LONG NOTE.....I THINK HE PASSED OUT.......SHE "TOOK US TO CHURCH " THAT NIGHT......IT WAS 36 YEARS AGO....BUT I STILL FEEL THE VIBES FROM HER SINGING THIS SONG.........WHEW...
This is what it's like when a singer has a really good understanding of music, melody, lyrics and context. Gladys knows how to handle a song that is highly associated with a particular singer and a particular musical. Dreamgirls was still touring in 1985. It was still in the public consciousness. Gladys sang it in an original way, but also in a way made sense for the audience. I don't imagine an America's Idol contestant would treat this song as anything but a vocal showcase for uncontrolled vocal riffs. Gladys isn't my personal favorite R&B singer, but I see her many strengths. Definitely one of the greats.
Several things strike me about this song. Gladys Knight killed it, of course, but since everyone has documented that well enough in the comments, I want to focus on the song itself. Honestly. When was the last time you heard a major song release where the story was about actual, real love? Not hooking up. Not sex. Not some stupid, superficial emotional appeal. Not "Woe is me, you did me wrong." Actual, real, broke-down, defining the very word, love. No one writes this stuff anymore.
I understand what you are saying. After the recent loss of James Ingram and listening to his music again, I realized that this current generation of music has just missed the essence of romance. Everything is about sex and violence not love.
To me this song surpasses personal relationships. It encompasses something deeper and broader. Her rendition definitely touches the depths of your soul. She should've had her title along time ago. Nevertheless, the EMPRESS still reigns 👑
That contralto voice is something serious. She ****** this song up in that lower register. Hometown girl always delivers and on point. (Archer High Eagles!). Don’t ever stop singing!
Correct me if I'm wrong please but...........Gladys Knight was in Detroit with Motown in 1967 when Florence Ballard was imploding and eventually being fired from The Supremes. Of all the female vocalists there at the time who knew what what going on behind the scenes, she was.....and clearly is.......the best singer of them all who witnessed that moment and could bring the passion and history to a rendition of the song that rival's Jennifer Holliday's version, which was based on a fictional character that everyone believes was based on Flo. That is why Gladys' version is beyond incredible.
Jennifer Holiday stated in an interview that when she first recorded this song the producers told her that it wasn't suitable for radio. They told her that if she didn't hold back they was going to have Gladys Knight recorded it.
Really? It's from a BROADWAY ORIGINAL CAST ALBUM. They were threatening to use Gladys to sing on the original cast album or just on the single version of the song? Most Broadway cast albums don't have a single but this one did and it was #1 on the R&B charts.
@@aze2252 lol. I felt no containment from jennifer. It was like a nuclear bomb dropped. I remember it played on the radio as a kid and I literally fell of the bed with goose bumps as she went in. I do like how she restrained and was soft in the beginning and then went crazy. It made that song classic.

Yeah you pulled that one off sista, SHE was even surprised, Gladys actually has the PERFECT VOICE but I get bored listening to her after a minute. She did an EXCELLENT Job. This is the ONLY singer I've seen that has NOT had a bad night. Aretha (had more bad than good the 2nd half of her career), Patti has fallen off the past 10 yrs (expectantly so due to age), Diana (I have seen her 5 times in my life and she was good each time), Dionne (well she sounds like a man now but she was kinda consistent when I saw her) but not Gladys. She is the ONLY one of this era who sounds IDENTICAL to her earlier years.
I’m speechless. Her voice is otherworldly. Pure, and uncut soulful 🔥

Gladys sang the song as herself. Bravo for that!
Amen. It's her style, her interpretations ...and it's always GREAT!
She simply did it her way and what more a person could have asked for from the inimitable Gladys Knight
Yes... Me Too
Yes.. She was just Gladys!!

wow, just wow this woman's voice is just on another level, beautiful ❤❤
Could this woman be any more talented or gorgeous??? xx
At last a great singer who doesn’t scream through the song and sings it
What a voice Gladys has pure class
Agreed. She did a great job with this song. The Whitney Houston live version is also excellent.

That’s how you sang she ain’t even go high and still brought the soul🙌🏾
Alright Miss Knight, truly beautifully talented. Still after all this time. Hey she's 76, now and still sounds so good. Her voice is strong. God Bless, on and on.
Wow she effortlessly did one of the hardest songs. Love her version ❤
This version delivers the emotion of Jennifer with a great deal of restraint. Bravo, Gladys!!!
This version of "And I am telling you" is all Gladys Knight.
OMG, the queen nailed it with natural emotion, she's the mother

Oh Gladys when you sing Lady you sure to sing.

Wonderful
Always wanted to hear a different style voice sing this song rather than the usual powerhouse soprano. Now I want to hear Mariah Carey do a rendition.
magic QUEEN !!!
What an iconic outfit.
Great x
Lyrics
And I am telling you I'm not going
You're the best man I'll ever know
There's no way I can ever go
No, no, no, no way
No, no, no, no way
I'm living without you
I'm not living without you
I don't want to be free
I'm staying, I'm staying
And you, and you, you're gonna love me
Oh, you're gonna love me
And I am telling you I'm not going
Even though the rough times are showing
There's just no way, there's no way
We're part of the same place
We're part of the same time
We both share the same blood
We both have the same mind
And time and time we have so much to share
No, no, no,
No, no, no way
I'm not waking up tomorrow morning
And finding that there's nobody there
Darling, there's no way
No, no, no, no way
I'm living without you
I'm not living without you
You see, there's just no way
There's no way
Please don't go away from me
Stay with me stay with me
Stay, stay and hold me
Stay, stay and hold me
Please stay and hold me, Mr. Man
Try it mister, try it mister
I know, I know, I know you can
Tear down the mountains
Yell, scream and shout
You can say what you want
I'm not walking out
Stop all the rivers
Push, strike, and kill
I'm not gonna leave you
There's no way I will
And I am telling you
I'm not going
You're the best man I'll ever know
There's no way I could ever, ever go
No, no, no, no way
No, no, no, no way I'm living without you
Oh, I'm not living without you,
Not living without you
I don't wanna be free
I'm staying, I'm staying
And you, and you, and you
You're gonna love me
You're gonna love me, yes you are
Ooh ooh love me, ooh ooh ooh love me
Love me, love me, love me, love me
You're gonna love me

Doesn't scream and she makes you shiver

You better not let Gladys knight do your song she just take the song away from you.

NOT THIS ONE! LOL
True Jennifer no one can beat her on this song. An I mean no one!!!
😍
Sang it Gladys! She lived that song!
besides whitney houstons cover of the song this is the only other good cover
tashan patterson a lie
Her cover and Whitney's are the only two that are unique and not imitations of Jennifer Holiday. I agree with you to a great extent.
mercy triumps you got that right many people try to immitate
