Simon asked the right question, (illustrating again why he's so valuable to the show,) why are you specially different, (to be on such a show,) and they're the kind of performance that really tests the ability of the judges to say something adequate, to give their answers to the question afterwards. (And I love to try to be Monday morning armchair quarterback-critic.) There are many factors in such a performance, and surely the choice of song is great, as is it's key, for these children voices at this particular age. Children's singing can be a genre of it's own, and choirs can take it to a further level, (and it's one of my favorite genres). Each age of children has it's own strengths over all other ages, and that is surely illustrated here. There's something about the group as a whole that has an overwhelming impact. (I'm reminded here of Canção do Mar. Meninas Cantoras de Petrópolis no Morro da Urca, in the impression made by the movement of the girls as a group.) There is so much to see in so many faces that we're left hungry for more. They exude a powerful presence as children, of great authenticity, and beauty. This performance was obviously not easy to achieve! One very powerful element of their "presence" is that the children take it so incredibly seriously, (there's intensity of focus, yet in a soft song). This is a competition, and these kids mean business, and yet in such a fun way! Part of the value of the song choice is it's beauty, as a tune for these voices, but another part of it is surely that, as a lyric, taking us into our personal histories and questions of mortality and vulnerability,) and it obviously means so much to the children. I'm reminded of the challenges of Northern Ireland's history, (and the Irish certainly love their land). So there are these contrasting qualities, love and authenticity (as children) combined with excellence and incredible seriousness (from "mere" children, at such a young age), great synchronization and yet amazing diversity of uniqueness in their individual expressions, (I like the shot of the 4 faces singing together). The show loves the dynamically sensational, yet the theme here is “simple things.” So there's a seriousness of emotion, "I came across a fallen tree ..." an "old souls" quality amidst authentic childhood. I see great discipline, but sense surging emotions underneath, including joy, but also fear, and then grief from the lyric, and love. I think the contrasts give it the beauty and emotional appeal. (Very gripping to me.) They begin with the individual voices, matching the lyric, ("I walk across an empty land," and then the other voices magnify the message. So the softness of the voice of the first soloist is quite effective, and is followed by the seriousness of the 2nd, building toward the group. The risk of losing one's "sense of place" is a powerful theme in our day, and so they, as children, (cleverly) take us, as adults, powerfully back far into our own childhoods. Obviously, all of this speaks for itself with regard to the teacher, and she obviously asks a lot from them, and remains a bit on edge, (bringing them into this risk)! (In part, she reminds me of the guy behind "The Langley Schools Project.") Art is immeasurable, but we often speak of the approaching of 100% of potential. I see here, in the pressure of that quest, some bending, leaning of standing children in one direction or another, and similar (precarious) tilting of heads, (even mouths,) under the challenge, and similar facial expressions, which all, paradoxically, itself is so artistically effective, (so congruent with lyrics and tune,) that it too takes things to the "peak" that is achieved. They achieve all of this, not as highly trained dramatic performers, but out of the authenticity of childhood, as drawn out for us. Grace (as gift, as "genius" in the etymological sense,) surely plays a role in much of this. I think it takes great respect for children to draw such a performance from them. Surely how they feel about their teacher is a big part of it. They don't at all come across as a pre-selected choir of top singers from out of hundreds of schools. So it expresses what we all might achieve, a tribute to the human spirit, the human potential. So they show us that this quality of beauty exists all around us, all the time, potentially. Also kudos to the one who made the video, to tell this wonderful story. Awesome. (But again, what great material to work with). (The teacher calls for nothing less than beauty at the last moment, and then we see the impression of that on the face of one of the soloists to be! Great!) Part of the greatness of the "got talent" shows is to be wowed by unexpectedly great performances that contrast with first impressions, and the authenticity of these children as children of this age really set us up for that. I'm putting it on my "See the Main Chance" playlist, as the final entry (for now and "Farm Songs," as it resonates so strongly with the rural crisis, with the threat and loss we face, cf. "The Myth of Beauty?").
Long message
Lol
