- Filmed on Monday, July 3 2023, I drive around Battle Creek, MI to see what's going on.
The naming of Battle Creek is a mystery. Some attribute the name to an encounter between two members of the Potawatomi and a federal government land survey party.
Another theory is attributed to a local river, which was known as Waupakiso by the local tribe, and the name was a reference to a battle between two indigenous tribes before the arrival of Europeans.
A post office was opened in Battle Creek in 1832. The first school was taught in a small log house about 1833 or 1834. A brick manufacturing plant, called the oldest enterprise in the township, was established in 1840 by Simon Carr and operated until 1903.
The Battle Creek Sanitarium was founded in the late 1800s by Dr. John Harvey Kellogg. In addition to some of his sometimes bizarre treatments that were featured in the movie "The Road to Wellville", Kellogg also funded organizations that promoted eugenics theories at the core of their philosophical agenda.
W. K. Kellogg had worked for his brother in a variety of capacities at the Battle Creek Sanitarium. Tired of living in the shadow of his brother John Harvey Kellogg, he struck out on his own, going to the boom-towns surrounding the oilfields in Oklahoma as a broom salesman. Having failed, he returned to work as an assistant to his brother.
While working at the sanitariums' laboratory, W.K. spilled liquefied cornmeal on a heating device that cooked the product and rendered it to flakes. He tasted the flakes and added milk to them. He was able to get his brother to allow him to give some of the product to some of the patients at the sanitarium, and the patients' demand for the product exceeded his expectations to the point that W.K made the decision to leave the sanitarium. Along with some investors, he built a factory to satisfy the demand for his "corn flakes".
Inspired by Kellogg's innovation, C. W. Post invented Grape-Nuts and founded his own cereal company in the town. Battle Creek has been nicknamed "the Cereal City."
Today, the Kellogg Company World Headquarters is still located in Battle Creek, employing 2,000 people.
In 1982, at the insistence of the Kellogg Company, the city annexed Battle Creek Township, nearly doubling the city's population. Kellogg's even went so far as to threaten to move their headquarters if the annexation failed to occur.
As of the census of 2020, there were 52,731 people residing in Battle Creek.
The city's racial makeup was 68.2% White, 17.3% Black or African American, .6% Native American, 3.7% Asian, 8.1% from two or more races, and 7.9% Hispanic or Latino of any race.
The median household income was $42,285, and the Per capita income was $25,270. 22.7% of the population was living below the poverty line.

Welcome to Ghetto creek Mi, ive been living here since 2009 it wasnt much better then its all a show they will talk so much about Battle creek cereal city back in the day many decade's ago, Battle. Creek is run by a bunch of WORTHLESS. RICH FAMILYS THAT DINT CARE ABOUT ANYTHING BUT MONEY IN THERE OWN POCKETS SOUND FAMILIAR. I worked for one of the familys 3 years no longer but here is some advice DONT MOVE TO BATTLE CREEK DONT IF I COULD LEAVE I WOULD
As you can see...absolutely nothing going on downtown. The roads are horrible....the homeless are all over the place downtown. The city government continues to destroy the town while simultaneously saying how vibrant and friendly it is. Plenty of weed shops in town....mostly in neighborhoods that are at most risk of drug and violent crime. Well done Cereal City.

Funny you should ask. You are familiar with the delicious gas station known as "Buckee's". I was on the road driving back from Michigan yesterday. I stopped off in Pontiac, IL to visit the knock-off version of Buckee's called "Wally's", and it's not as good but I don't need to drive 800 miles to get there! Beef brisket baby!

No very boring and huge population decline. Kalamazoo area is a lot better. After living in BC for only a year I GTFO.
