Similar story to the rediscovery of the Golden Palace, or Domus Aurea, an impressive piece of architecture left behind by another of Rome’s famously mad emperors, Nero. Legend has it that Nero set the city of Rome on fire to clear space for the construction of his golden pleasure palace.
It wasn’t until the 14th century that the palace ruins, buried at that time, were rediscovered by complete accident. Its opulent decoration was so impressive to contemporary Italians that it became a destination for the finest artists of the day, like Michelangelo and Rafael, who took inspiration and incorporated the style of the faded frescoes into their own work.
The discovery is seen as having a formative impact on the development of Renaissance art.

But the bacteria that causes it is related to the Yaws disease (from Southern Africa) and there is evidence that outbreaks may have occurred in the 14th and 13th century and misidentified as leprosy.
Caligula's early lifespan predates most suggestions of the pre-Columbian origin of Syphilis (either from an undiscovered African strain or some other unknown source i.e. Vikings or something) and it's more likely his madness was caused by a number of other things. Lead poisoning, genetics, trying to up the Imperial lifestyle of his forebears, who knows. A lot of it, of course, is propaganda. But not all of it. My father flew TBM Avengers in WWII. When I was 5 or 6 he taught ground training to Firesign students fir the Air Force. One day S Korean military officials came to observe. He told a story about sitting in TBM waiting fir the order to destroy a bridge, the order never came because the Japanese in charge committed suicide. After the talk, one the officers came up,and told my father his fortunate it was he did bomb the bridge. The officer was in the Resistance and he and other resistance members were hiding under the bridge. This piece brought story to mind,

Caligula came to power at age 25; a "kid" by today's standards; whether or not the characterization is fair. I don't know that the retrospective, "Historical" assessments will ever provide an accurate picture of the person. However, for what is known with certainty, I am certain that I would defer from the life he lived. That aside, his "artistic sense" resonates a positive NOTE. Quite advanced for the often brutal realities of his time.
    Thank you.

    • @Sashazur

I don’t think his artistic taste was “advanced” compared to most of his reality - every rich person in the Roman empire knew art and wanted it if they could afford it. Of course being emperor he was on a different level.

Perhaps in several hundred years, but in the meantime it is on display for everyone to see and appreciate for it's age and artistry. What I can gather by Galigula, demise his Imperial Pretorian Guards assinated him on his way back from watching the Gladiatorial carnage at the Colosium...taking a short cut back to the Palace & being a bit Enibreated from alcohol 🍸he was caught him off guard by the time he probably realized what was about to happen his life quit literally flashed in front of him with devastating effect..

Caligula was HORRENDOUS, but without perspective a person can't get a feel for what things were really like back then. Just seeing this table after reading "I, Claudius" makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

She is someone who is not just a collector and a dealer but she has written many books on antiques and history and she is an expert on the subjects. So much of the world's art is stolen art. Tax-deductable funding of archeological excavations in poor countries has been a source of theft and income for many rich families in the west for ages.
