Zeus is the god of the sky lol. Hades' domain is the underworld, sea/ocean for Poseidon and sky for Zeus. Earth is the domain of man, with the god brothers having equal claim.
Also, in case you confused, Zeus broke the pact when he had Thalia, not Hercules. Hercules, or Heracles as he is known in Greek myths was born before this pact was made. And Poseidon broke it when he had Percy. Annabeth is the daughter of Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom, Arts and Strategic War. Clarisse is the daughter of Ares, the God of Courage and War, the more violent side of it. Luke is the son of Hermes, the God of Travelers, Thieves and Messenger of the Gods. Grover is a satyr and is technically 24 but mentally 12 because satyrs age twice as slow as humans. The flying harpy monsters are the Furies, who work directly under Hades.
This episode shows each characters motivation. Percy is doing this quest not for the bolt, but for his mom. Annabeth want do to this quest kinda for the bolt, but mostly to prove herself. She looks up to her mom and her friends/family, but thus cannot stand anyone who slanders Athena or Thalia. Grover is there to finish the quest and support Percy but he doesn't want to upset Annabeth, who he previously protected. But on this episode they all come together by understanding each other.
As for Medusa, what she said about her curse maybe right, but we only heard one side of the story, hence why Annabeth calls her a liar. We didn't hear from Athena, so we can't say for sure. And even if Medusa was innocent at the beginning, she clearly is not anymore, as she has turned countless innocent creatures to stone for decades or even hundreds of years and hid them in the basement. Notice how she only have monster statues displayed outside? It's project an image that she only harms actual monsters, but if you look at her basement, you know the truth.
Regardless, Medusa is technically a monster, so her body turns to dust when she dies. Her head, on the other hand, becomes a trophy, so it remains and can be still be used a as weapon, just like the minotaur horn from episode 1. Percy broke the minotaur horn and used it as a weapon and it remained as a trophy in the attic.

Athena is the goddess of wisdom and battle strategy so Annabeth is not like a typical demigod

the reason olympus is in NY and the underworld is in LA is because in the book/show lore, the seat of power of the gods follows the heart of power of western civilization, wherever that is in any time period. the books explain it has been in other places, for example is was in England for centuries before moving to the US. also, some of the monsters, like Alecto, do come back from the dead after being sent back to the underworld. they’re immortal in the sense that after being killed they can be sent back to life if Hades wills it.

Quick lesson on greek gods in percy jackson without spoilers: there are many gods that live on olympus! At camp there’s the 12 cabins, which represent the 12 major gods who rule from olympus (they are also thought to “live” there, but many of them spend most of their time elsewhere). The “olympians” part of the series title is a direct reference to those 12 gods. There are a couple empty cabins, like the poseidon cabin before percy showed up, which are honorary cabins. Those gods don’t have kids for various reasons, like zeus and poseidon with their pact, artemis who is a maiden goddess, and hera who is the goddess of marriage as well as zeus’ wife and so she therefore doesn’t have affairs that lead to demigods. These gods basically have cabins because to ignore them while honouring the other olympians would be seen as rude. But there are also tons and tons of minor gods, like hypnos, god of sleep, or the muses, goddesses of the arts, who don’t have cabins and may or may not live on Olympus. Their kids get lumped in with the unclaimed. These gods are typically considered less powerful and/or less important than the 12 olympians. However just because a god doesn’t have a cabin, doesn’t mean they are a minor god. Hades doesn’t have a cabin, even though he is one of the big three (hades, zeus and poseidon). He’s not technically an olympian because he actually lives full time in the underworld, and he’s not exactly a god people like. They don’t really want to bring his energy into camp. The cabins at camp are numbered, so here is the list of the cabins and which gods they belong to:
    1. zeus: god of the skies, king of the gods, son of Kronos, father of thalia the tree (empty cabin)
    2. hera: goddess of marriage and family, queen of the gods, wife of zeus, daughter of kronos (empty cabin)
    3. poseidon: god of the seas and earthquakes, brother of zeus, son of Kronos, father of percy (empty cabin until percy moved in)
    4. Demeter: goddess of the harvest/agriculture, mother of persephone (persphone is hades’ wife), daughter of kronos (not empty)
    5. Ares: god of war/violence/bloodshed, son of zeus, father of clarisse (not empty)
    6. Athena: goddess of wisdom and battle strategy, daughter of zeus, mother of annabeth (not empty)
    7. Apollo: god of the sun/poetry/healing/music/prophecy/archery, son of zeus, twin to artemis (not empty)
    8. Artemis: goddess of the moon/hunting/maidens, daughter of zeus, twin to apollo (empty cabin)
    9. Hephaestus: god of blacksmiths and fire, son of zeus and hera, husband of aphrodite (not empty)
    10. Aphrodite: goddess of love/beauty and war, the oldest olympian, daughter of ouranos (ouranos is kronos’ father), wife of hephaestus (not empty)
    11. Hermes: god of travelers/thieves/messengers, son of zeus, father of luke, (not empty)
    12. Dionysus: god of wine/madness/theatre/revelry, son of zeus, (not empty)

Percy is pretty much the only demigod (that we've seen) that has grown up in the human world, so he speaks and has the emotional development that we would have, but the other demigods grew up in the magical world or knowing about it since very young and they think/have emotional development from that sort of old school/ancient Greek way. The rules of society they grew up with are totally different, which Percy is just finding out about. He's learning from them and they'll probably learn from him. They don't really understand him (except Grover) or his way of thinking.
And I used to read a lot of Greek mythology when I was a kid (been a while) but Shane, you are right that the gods were petty and selfish a LOT of times and could be cruel. They'd punish people out of jealousy and perceived slights. The people many times didn't do anything wrong (to our eyes), but the gods would feel jealous or offended and transform them into objects or monsters, like the Minotaur and Medusa. I don't remember all the details of her story, but it does ring true the way she explained it because I remember feeling bad for her as a kid and saying, "Man, she got SCREWED."

There are different versions of Medusa's origin. Athena was a beautiful priestess of Athena. In one version, Poseidon "assaulted" her in a temple of Athena. In another, they got "romantic" in it. Either way, Athena was mad and turned Medusa into the monster she became known to be. In the book, this backstory is not told. Medusa is just portrayed as an old woman who provides them with food, hides her identity, and tries to turn them into stone while pretending to take a picture of them. In the show, they decided to humanize her and give her more depth. The demigods also quickly find out who she is in the show, compared to their counterparts in the book. In both the book and the show, the encounter with Medusa is fairly short. Also, I know your daughter keeps saying Annabeth is annoying, which I understand. 🤣 But, she is like Hermione from Harry Potter. She knows a lot and figures things out quickly because she is a daughter of Athena, the goddess of wisdom. She has a hard time understanding Percy's reluctance, which frustrates her. And, she is "self righteous" just like her mom in the show.

Thanks for the reaction -- I enjoyed watching you guys figuring things out! In the books they make clear that "Olympus" moves depending on where the epicenter of Western culture is. So in ancient times it was the Mediterranean, but in modern times it's in America. The entrance to the Underworld also moves accordingly to a significant locale that is east of "the heart of the West", so Los Angeles.
Later on in the series, they do travel to the Mediterranean region, but it's actually an extremely dangerous thing to do -- because the mythical world was centered there for a long time so many centuries ago, it's full of mythical monsters and creatures and artifacts and they're all very attuned to demigods. The only reason an adventure like this is feasible is because the American landscape isn't as cluttered with ancient monsters and curses, etc. After the characters cross the ocean, they're under attack and hunted basically nonstop.

I'm thinking that maybe it's better you have prior knowledge to Greek Mythology when you watch this show(?) Not really sure. It's quite difficult to understand some parts if you don't know.
For instance, the curse of Medusa's head doesn't work on the gods, they're gods, after all. Also, the family tree. It looks like you even didn't know who Athena is and that she's one of Zeus's children included in the main 12 Olympians.
There will be a lot more mentions relating to the mythology itself in the next episodes, though so....
