In the books, they didn't get that Auntie M is Medusa for a while. The first one to figure it out was Annabeth, just like in this version. It was also Percy that was the first one to want to go inside. With Medusa herself, she said a couple of things about not liking Annabeths mother. Some of those comments lead to them figuring it out. The book doesn't really go into detail about her, the monster - side is talked about and shown more than the "victim" -side. I think it's also Percy that decapitates her in the books, but Annabeths cap isn't used. He uses something else, but I can't remember what (besides the sword). The whole sending the head to Olympus - thing also happened in the books, including the quote " I am impertinent", but without the song. I really like what they did with Medusa's character here, it gives her more depth. If you know about the darker parts/versions of her story, a couple of lines sound different. If you don't, it still makes sense.
There is basically the Greek version and Roman version of the Medusa myth. In one Posesidon is her boyfriend and they were together in Athena's temple. The other version is that Posesidon SA her but Athena punished her. Making her a victim. While this series touches on her as a victim, it is clear that she has become a monster. Hurting innocent people as well as the monsters. What Sally said to young Percy in the first episode about not all who look like heroes are heroes and those that look like monsters are monsters, will be a huge recurring theme in the series. There are some elements that are similar to the book, Medusa is different in looks and personality, Percy uses a reflection in a garden decoration to decapitate her but I think the series improved it. I actually shouted "oh that's so clever!" when Annabeth put the hat on Medusa. I really enjoyed the TV series. While the movies were enjoyable if you don't consider them an adaptation of the Books, the TV show also doesn't quite feel like a 1 to 1 adaptation. Some things obviously changed based on budget and practicality. To me the show feels like the author revised the story 20 years later.
They changed the Medusa from the books intentionally because the me too movement made the sexual assault storyline more relevant. It could’nt really be explored in the books but they did good to suggest that she was more victim then villain. They sent the head to the gods in the books too.
Somebody else pointed this out, but I really like a detail about the statues: The monster ones are out in the open, visible for anyone passing by. The innocent ones are hidden away. It's basically her pretending to be like: "If you are not a monster, nothing bad will happen to you and I won't turn you into stone." Oh, anrd a bit of trivia: One of the statues in the basement is Rick Roordan, author of the booke :)
point it out that the amazing writing is because the author is one of the head writers, he was also present in ep 1 as one of the men in principal's office
so basically every quest should only have 3 people and not one person more, they COULD choose more but thats dangerous, as 3 is a sacred number and any more than that could get them into a catastrophe. thats explained better in the books haha
They can have more if the quest if the prophecy says so. But prophecy is tricky. I can't remember if its mentioned in the show but Luke had a quest he did on his own and almost didn't make it back from. Which is partly why he has some glory in the camp.
Exactly - They establish that three is a magic number in Greek mythology. The big three gods (Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades), the three virgin goddesses, the three Fates, the three Furies, etc. So they always send 3 on a quest. Sending fewer is asking for a quest to fail, and sending more is asking for those extra questmates to be killed.
The Medusa encounter is changed from the book, but it's one of the best changes they made. They gave her way more mythically-accurate depth instead of just being another obstacle
One of the things Rick Riordan said about this series is that it gave him a chance at a do-over, which a lot of authors would love to get. They also recognize right away who it was, which is much more believable than someone as smart as Annabeth being clueless.
Not really… the book was a lot more suspenseful, it was actually kind of a scary chapter when they came to the realisation it was Medusa, here… there was none of that at all. They just happened to know
@@charlottemarks8881 I was thinking this even before he said it. It makes sense. Most authors want to edit their work, but when you've published a huge best seller, you can't do it unless you are given an opportunity like this.
Medusa's story told even if it is sanitized for a younger audience instead of her just being a monster was when I knew I was going to like this series.
I loved how they used the hat for Medusa. She wasn't out to get anyone until she took off the hat. It acted as a way to pause her powers since the hair and her eyes were not directly visible so they could glance or look at her safely. It really is a great episode.
I think she is a victim, but she's gone on to victimize others-something that's all to common. She's rightfully angry at Athena for punishing her for what Poseidon did, yet she tried to do the exact same thing to Percy and Annabeth. And I doubt every person in that basement was a bully.
Well just like with other mythologies, the Greek myths vary in their details. One version says this was an unfair punishment for being assaulted, another says it wasn't. Some scholars suggest based on the first scenario that this was actually a weapon Athena granted Medusa to defend herself from any more attacks. Still another version of the story is that Medusa and her two sisters were always Gorgons, and never underwent any change at all. I think it all comes down to which version you like best, or what means the most to you. Pandora's Jar is a great book about these types of variations
I loved the tension between Annabeth and Percy cause mirrors their parents relationship (they hate each other). In the book Annabeth disliked Percy at first cause he was a son of Poseidon if im not mistaken
The reason for the quest being limited to three is that the number is auspicious in Greek mythology. Three fates, three furies, three sons and three daughters of Kronos and Rhea, etc. Taking more than three would be tempting fate (and a notion that may come up in future seasons).
@@Gradestar10 They do so in the second book (Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson). In the third book, they set off with five and return with three. In the fourth book, it isn't until they set off in a group of three in the middle of the book that they begin to succeed. And in the fifth, there is no quest.
Part of me does wish that Medusa was actually a friendly character, given how her origin story is often one where she's a victim of the gods' scorn, in some origin stories she's assaulted in Athena's temple. Plus it does kinda diminish Percy's lesson of 'a monster isn't always a monster' given that every monster he does come across ends up being a monster anyway.
Something to note, greek epics and heroic story's use a strong theme of character flaws in heroes. We can see Annabeth's when she's challenging Medusa's story about her mom
@@georginavaughan3052 eh I beg to differ. The first one is a mediocre fetch quest. It's ok, actually. It has good effects. The second one lost all reason.
