I really need to go and visit the NYMR again. Going to see Sir Nigel Gresley running used to be my birthday "treat" as a child, and we went every September for many years. That stopped when my parents divorced around 20 years ago. I went once by myself, after passing my driving test, for Gresley's last official run before overhaul and haven't been back since. I adore the NYMR but the streamlined Pacific was always the highlight.

    Some lovely shots!
Thought you might like to know what happened (to show I know what I’m talking about I was the signalman at Grosmont this day and was involved in the decision making). As others have said, Lucie failed at Levisham on the morning and sadly we never recovered, rubbing about an hour late most of the day. As a result the Control decided to step the trains up, so rather than running an hour late we would be on time but the locos and sets wouldn’t be as advertised, as the key thing now was to ensure everyone could get home, including staff, passengers, locos, etc.
It was therefore decided that Gresley would be held at Pickering to form the last departure. The S15 would work the penultimate train to Pickering, rather than the last round trip. Sadly this still left about 15 late from memory due to needing coal which wasn’t expected. It later came back light engine as it was needed at Grosmont.
This plan would have seen the Q6 and Standard 5 take the last train to Pickering rather than the penultimate train as planned. But the Q6 was sat around doing not very much, and nothing was moving from Pickering for reasons I’m not entirely sure of, so the Q6 ran light engine to New Bridge to get that crew closer to home. The Standard 5 then worked the last train to Pickering with Gresley working the last train from Pickering, albeit still an hour late in the end rather than more or less right time as had been planned.
But at no time we’re trains running two hours late - we just cancelled a couple of trains in the afternoon and held things to form the next departure right time, though sadly that still didn’t quite work as intended…

Some stunning clips there with the drone. I have never been to the North Yorkshire Railway but I do want to go because I used to enjoy watching Heartbeat and the Royal on TV which featured the railway and the surrounding village of Goathland. The station at Goathland also featured in the first Harry Potter film at the start and end of the film with some slight CGI landscape trickery.

They never do. There were 20-30 minute delays on the Severn Valley Railway 2022 Autumn Steam gala caused by many factors including the shunt turn around for the local services, passengers boarding the trains and as we found out on the Saturday Hagley Hall was deciding to set fire to both the Worcestershire and Shropshire countryside as it travelled up and down the line which inevitably forced it to be taken from service for the remainder of the gala.

I was on the NYMR from The Friday Pullman service right until Monday.
From that Friday night on the Pullman (where the steam heat was knocked off at grosmont while we waiting for the line for 45 minutes where staff and guests were getting into there jackets because it was 5c outside) to the returning Whitby service A on Monday afternoon.
The only service that left on time was the First one Sunday morning.
I had spent much of it travelling up and down the line and despite it being late. I absolutely loved it all, a Gala is not a day trip event. Don’t plan to leave on time and certainly more so don’t expect it to be smooth.
Too many people not really understanding that it’s a vintage service. Running with vintage equipment.
I heard the last freights being called off, spent hours set at grosmont (drinking from the beer festival while we could) running on the double headed as shown in the video (No.85/No.29).
Watching dozens of man hours/volunteers doing there up most best
I was even on the greene king you mentioned that should of been the Q6.
I genuinely had the best weekend I have had in a long time and that was because I had nowhere to go but the rails and enjoying the company of my wife and we were genuinely prepared for this hence making no other plans.
I was very happy to not hear 90% of the people complaining and only those online really seemed to have an issue. (Not the sort of confusion with it all you seemed to have)
I did think at some point if this is where Lawrie would be but alas I missed you, had seen plenty of piglet though.

Just curious, you got some great shots etc., and felt free to say how annoyed you were about late running. Did you just stay lineside or pay to go on any of the trains, or make any financial contribution to the railway on that day? I’m asking because speaking as someone involved in gala running on another railway I find it irksome when people make these sort of comments without bothering to find out why there is late running, especially when it’s a freeloader annoyed because he didn’t get the shots he was after.

    • @lmm
      @lmm  Год назад

Not annoyed at all, just absolutely amazed how late it got and how much it stacked.
It certainly wasn't meant to be an attack on the railway, just disbelief. We all know these things happen, but it's how people the railway deals with them that matter.
I stay lineside, I have no real interest in riding on the cushions in truth.
But, I get a ticket to support the day - we know these things cost a fortune to put on.

I used to volunteer up there in the 90s and early 2000s and they were just as bad back then. And that was before they started running to Whitby! There are some really good clips here, especially the tram at Levisham. However, I do think that perhaps you might have been a little hard on the good chaps at the NYMR. I'm sure they were doing their level best to keep things running in trying and challenging circumstances. It looked like a damp day, were they having problems with adhesion on the heavily graded line? Were you able to give them a donation towards their work whilst you photographed their wonderfully turned out trains? Thanks for putting the footage up and I do enjoy your channel. I appreciate the 4.5 hour drive you had to get there and back again and the frustration you must feel but go easy on the criticism. When you consider the vast minutiae of details that need to be right to run any train service at all, it's a wonder they do as well as they do. It's not easy running a railway to everyones liking all the time.

They're a big railway, and we know things happen.
I commented that it was very late, and the latest I've ever seen.
I did at no point critise the people or the organisation or say they were doing a bad job.
Just it's gone very wrong, and serveral of the decisions made to me - not knowing the full story - I didn't understand why.

Lawrie you are what we used to call when active on a heritage line a free loader. After spending a lot of money setting up a gala. We would find photographers popping up upsetting our neighbours. But worst of all the photographers never paid any money towards the cost of the gala. You as a volunteer should understand this. I have not watch nor will I Like.

Nice shots there. Not referring to Lawrie, but some gala photographers can be a pain. A lot of trespassing, damage to fences etc. Some twonks at the NYMR gala even uprooted fire beater stands this year to get better choo choo pics. Bit stupid given the fire risks during the summer. Never mind though - volunteers will be out in crappy winter weather fixing it all up again. 😕
