How to Outline a SERIES With the 3 Act Story Structure! 📚✨ Ever since I posted my video series on the 3 act story structure, I’ve been getting this question from you guys: “how would this structure work for a book series??" So that’s what we’re talking about in today's video - how to take the 3-act story structure and translate it to be an outline template for a whole SERIES of riveting books, not just one standalone novel. I'm 14 too! I'm writing a duology about a girl who's a agent that is given a mission to try and find a resigned agent who went rogue. It actually turns out the agent who went "rogue" actually didn't and is undercover.

It's funny, the first book idea I ever had as a writer was a giant 3 part series (every new writer starts with grand ideas, am I right??) I recently looked at all the notes and outlines I had written for this "series" and thought I like the idea, but how in the world will I ever structure this thing, then boom, Abbie drops this video. I have a lot of work to do!! Thank you, Abbie!!
I actually agree with you although my first book was a sad dramatic short story ..then the series idea popped.. I've been working on it for three years now and Abbie just bosted it up👏🏽

I read it not long ago too and I must say, it's not my usual genre but it was so well-written that I just loved it. One of the very few books to genuinely make me cry (a list of maybe two or three at the most).

Anyone else think that the authors of Avatar the Last Airbender found a time machine, traveled to the future to watch this video and then went back and wrote the script for one of the greatest children’s shows of all time???
This structure has existed in fiction for centuries now. It became engraved in the subconscious of the audience, especially in the audiences who would later becomes authors themselves. It's like a hidden invisible tradition that fiction-creators didn't even realize they had. I can't think of any author who doesn't use these common structures in their stories... except for Hayao Miyazaki. Years have passed and his formula is still a mystery, his stories don't follow these structures (or at least not as much as other authors), but his stories are still some of the best that have been created.
Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, Kiki's Delivery Service... I'm trying to find this structure in these movies, but only a few things appear. There's an Inciting Incident in Spirited Away, but that's about the only obvious plot-point I see in this film. Kiki's Delivery Service has a Game-changing midpoint (when she can't use her powers) but the rest of the movie feels very loose like an indie-film, without following rigorous rules. Castle in the Sky is more clear on the 3-act structure: Inciting incident, mid-point and final battle. But at the same time, it does things very differently to western films. Miyazaki has said that when he approaches an idea, he doesn't follow any sort of structure, he just goes with the flow and creates the story as he goes on. Maybe that's the answer, following a structure too rigorously compromises creativity.
@@100lovenana definitely agree with you that the Ghibli movies are very unique to say the least. Yes, there is a thing as too much structure, but I would also argue that any story needs plot “anchors” if you will. (At least if you want closure. There’s many movies/shows/books that don’t do this as an artistic choice usually to convey a message of some sort) Miyazaki’s movies are more soft world. He’s not trying to make anything concrete like Lord of the Rings universe. But he does use elements (plot anchors) that we see in other movies. For example, I would liken Spirited Away to a type of Alice in Wonderland narrative, where the main character travels to or ends up in “another world” (usually really strange) and learns more about their world through encoded messages within this fantasyland. This character usually comes back to their world a better person because of their journey.
@@emilymenjivar6138 I agree, I'd say if Chihiro had an "inner-conflict", it might be her lack of bravery. At the beginning she refuses to enter anything unknown, she's very cowardly in that sense. But there's 3 things that challenge her mis-belief: her parents, Haku and No-Face. She knows she has to do things that scare her to save her parents, because she loves them and wants to save them. She also cares for Haku, since he's the first person who protected and helped her. With No-Face she acknowledges that she's the one who let him in the Bath House, so him going berserk is kinda her own fault
I'd say that the story of Spirited Away is about a little girl learning that she must be brave and face scary situations to protect the people she loves. It makes sense, because what hooks the audience is her dilemma: We want to see her save her parents, we want to see her succeed in saving Haku and No-Face. But this inner structure is so cleverly hidden in the mysterious world that surrounds her, the audience is so captivated by the world that they don't see the inner-structure the first time.

Hi Abbie! Thanks for this video. I was hoping if you will make a video on how to write a good revenge series.
This is amazing, and heaven-sent, as I am currently outlining a triology. I was done outlining most of Book 1 until I stumbled upon your Channel and realised I had been going at it all wrong. Your videos are seriously amazing and almost every one of them gives me an Aha-Moment about my book(s). In the triology I am writing, I will adapt this template, to fit two protagonists. One will stay the same over the course of the whole triology, the other will switch from one, to the second, to the third. So while my main-main Character will not finish their journey until book 3, the others all have their own Aha-Moment and a (mostly) finished character arc, when their POV ends.
There is one thing I still struggle with though, and on which I have not found a Video of yours yet: Romance, when it's not the main plot. When I write something, of which the genre is supposed to be romance, then I am to do it and convey it realistically. But when it is not the main plot, as in my current Triology, I struggle with it. My MC is supposed to realise that Love is worth it, through the course of the fantasy-triology. That means (a part of) the Aha-Moment will be realising she is in love with her love-interest. However, building the whole romance thingy up in the first place, establishing that there are feelings for this person, that she isn't fully aware of, or that she pushes down is really hard, especially if it's drawn out over three books. Do you have any tips on that?
Well, I'm not Abbie, but I have some ideas.
Your MC should probably encounter the love interest multiple times throughout the series. Bonus points if MC has to talk to/ text/ call/ DM Love Interest. MC should have some really good reasons to not want to have feelings for Love Interest, such as MC not being emotionally ready for a new romantic relationship, due to a nasty break-up. Maybe Love Interest is flirting with someone other than MC, or maybe MC is so busy with or stressed about the main plot that MC doesn't feel like getting into a relationship. Or both.
Stuff in the main plot should impact how MC interacts with the rest of the world. Maybe an event in the main plot teaches MC something about the importance of love or the brevity of life.

Can you explain more on internal conflict and how I should explain it? Do I use italics and use my protagonist’s thoughts? What they say? I’m another young author, and lately I’ve noticed, while reading, that internal conflict is such a key issue I acquire in my writing. When starting off, my character gets “hurt” (injected with a tracker) and her brother is missing. (I need suggestions to not keep this cliché or a trope, however I do plan to rewrite it ALL) And should a prologue or “years earlier” make much sense? How do I write backstory like such topic? Well, I just applied this structure to my trilogy outline and it seems there is about 80% coverage. It's a really good template and it allows me to even deepend my understanding of some of the beats. Thank you, Abbie :)
PS: I think it's not a 100%, because my MC goes trough a negative character arc.

@@jge8144 Well, my MC is searching for the Source of all in the Universe - God, and wants to go back to him, to go home, where all living souls come from. In his journey he discovers some deep dark parts of himself and embraces the lie of becoming the hero, who will achieve total jutice in the Universe - even if that means destroying the Home he so desperately wants to go back to.

I realized this about my story, and that is that my characters fears is not really holding them back. instead i created it in a way that they did go after what they want, but that their fear instead made them do it in a disastrous way, that hurt either themselves or others.

I wished I'd found your channel a year or two ago when I decided I'll write this long epic tale I and the boys brainstormed for a long time. We were planning on making it into either an animated series or a comic series but due to us being mere 13-year-olds with 0 budgets and experience on stuff, we simply couldn't. Most of my friends eventually forgot about this dream leaving me, my best bro who eventually became my co-writer, and another friend of mine who was secretly perfecting arts so he could draw the comics for the story. That's when I decided I'll just write the entire story despite having no experience with writing. And I find it daunting as heck that I almost lost interest after 5 story revisions. Over the past 6 months tho, I decided that if I'm not gonna be the one who will write it, no one will. And so I tried thinking about developing the plot Wich I greatly struggled on until I stumbled upon your channel some days ago. You made me realize that it's not all about the plot that makes a story worth remembering, it's all about the characters and the main theme of your story. (I realized that the villain of my story is the only well-written character but he also needs some polishing as well.) So I binged watch your videos while also developing the characters and man did it made my story more colorful. the characters have more feelings than ever and my main character went from being an edgy teenager with zero character development to a curious badass, (still edgy) problem solver who is trying to find the reason why evil is a thing and why can't it coexist with Good (Wich was the misbelief learned and thought to him in both of his previous life and his current one.) Thank you so much for teaching this to me for free. Tbh it feels like a sin to not pay you for the guides and free templates you prepared, but man did all of those helped. You're the best writing channel I've found. I'm still developing the story tho and I plan to give myself 5-10 years to perfect its storyline and arts (yep I'm also going to practice arts) before I publish it but it's nice to have a headstart and that's your writing guides. Every. Single. Time. I hear people talk about structure, they forget series exist. Thank you for this. When I look at my favourite series, they tend to be a whole lot of a messy whatever, and sort wrap up at the end in a twist. There is character development, but not a lot of linear progress. Massive change, but rarely about overcoming fear. Stakes low to nonexistent for the most of it. And yet it feels coherent and super satisfying... I guess with series it comes down to "write a ton and once you have some experience, rely on your gut feeling..."
This was epic!! I have a very strong feeling that I will be referencing this a thousand times when I get around to finishing my fantasy trilogy. Super helpful as always!! 💕

I feel smart bc the way I outlined my three-book series is very similar to this! It was also really helpful, I can use this advice to make my themes consistent and flesh out the parts I haven't entirely figured out yet.

When I was going to make my first novel I found it I still use the three-act structure, but I introduce a sort of subconflict that would pop up every now and then and within each series that sub conflict would slowly build until its conclusion while the main conflict in each book gets resolved

So if I wanna use it in a duology, I put the small aha-moment at the end of book one and then continue with the formula for book 3 on book 2? Or do I use the template for book 1 without changes and just leave out the second book and continue with the formula for book 3 on book 2?
Oh, well. I was looking at the 3-Act Structure for a series a little bit differently. Book 1 is Act 1; Book 2 is Act 2; Book 3 is Act 3. Since I've started, and it seems to be working for my series, I'm going to keep on it. Thanks for the write-in today, Abbie, Wednesday, October 6, 2021.

Hello, thank you very much, I was thinking about writing all the steps until you said there was a template, very useful indeed. I just realized my long story had ao many important batles and journeys that its better to make it a trilogy, do you recommend plot this trilogy or plot with another arctype? Because my book (which was supposed to be just 1, but would be a trilogy now) was a story just to show a jorney where the world change and then the superpowerful battles for the lands might start. So can I start this trilogy to open my world to a future second trilogy?
Be bold enough to freestyle it. Make it about ideas and competition and team work and after each board meeting, your confidence will grow.
I'm planning a series that I think will be more than three books long, maybe five or six. How would I apply this advice in this case?
Should I use the same basic outline as the middle book in this video for each book that comes between the first and last? So basically every book in between is a new act two? Or would I have to find some way to stretch out the entire act two arc/outline over all of those books?

Hey Abbie, thank you so much for this video, it makes a lot of sense. It is a bit overwhelming to plot a whole series and the fear of not hitting all the marks persists. How would you treat this with a 4 book or 5 book series? I saw another channel recommend that the "journey" book should be multiplied through all the "middle" books. But wouldn't that get tenuous at some point?

@AbbieEmmons What if I want to write a Paranormal Romance, novella series? Can I use this outline or do I need to create a different one?
Can this be applied to dual POV's? Since my book is still in the outlining phase, I'm not sure whether it should be a series or standalone but this gave me some spark to make it a series. But its dual POV one character is fully done and then the other main character is nearly fone except the fear and misbelief aren't linking... but yea can I apply this to dual POV's if so how?

Can I ask, when doing a Dual POV, when you say 'ask yourself', do I apply this to both Characters or just one. Or is it a case of at some beats it's one and in others it's two?
I'm writing romance. Would it also be fair to say that my MCs goal can change between book 1 and the following books in the series? For example, my MCs have met before but only one remembers it. When he realises who she is and they part in between book 1 and 2, his goal is less about his mission and more about being with her.
I'm new to the whole writing thing and I wanna nail it, but everytime I start to get somewhere, I think "but what if I...."

Quick question: How would I use your negative character arc template and intertwine the trilogy template together? I am writing a YA fantasy trilogy/quartet with a tragic ending and characters.
This video about trilogies made me realize that I’m probably actually writing a duology because what *should* be book one is being woven into books two and three in flashback 😵💫

Does this count in a series where it’s different problems in each book but they’re all connected from one another? If not I think I kind of figured out how it can work. The whole theme of my two characters relationship can basically be worked out into the inception/the journey/the battle.
