The reason that you didn't smell marihuana so much outside the city center of Amsterdam is that there are much less tourists. I seriously don't know any Dutch person who ever did drugs, but all my foreign friends did it at a certain point in their lives.

Well , well over 17 Million makes the Netherlands (or Holland) bigger than Portugal, Greece, Sweden, a.s.o. It is the most dense populated country in Europe. Because of the well thought out infrastructure you wouldn't realize this travelling through-out the country. The 'caves' in the St Pietersberg are not actually caves but the result of quarrying marl. Such quarries are in quite a few places in southern Limburg (Valkenburg is famous for them).

Judging by the fancy wooden tray it was served on and the bread used, this was a 'hip' restaurant that probably charges you the pretty penny for something silly. A traditional Dutch lunch would be pieces of bread with cheese or some meat. Peanut butter or sandwich spread is another option. For someone with a sweet-tooth, there has to be a slice of bread with chocolate sprinkles.
