Thank you for these tutorials. Every one is so well thought out & presented & a huge gift ( along w the books- which I’ve bought😉!) to people like me trying to learn jp. Very much appreciated.
Whoa! Very interesting - "Dissonance is a sound that invites resolution" ... context/tone are so fascinating ... THANKS! as always. Great starter video for my practice today.
I am a classically trained pianist and have begun learning jazz this year. Thank you so much for this fascinating video, it really helped explain so much about what sounds “good” in jazz, and inspired me to play some much more interesting harmonies on standards. Thank you and resolution!
Thanks Jeremy! Great "Ted-talk" style session. Very helpful points- main takeaway for me is looking horizontally not just vertically and RESOLVING, along with your clearly defined points to pay attention to
I'm really getting into your channel, and may hire you soon for some private lessons! But I wanted to make a suggestion that maybe you should figure out a way to run a line in with your piano and voice, through a DAW into obs or something because sometimes the sound is so distorted I have a hard time making out what you're playing. I think it's especially prominent with a subject like dissonance :). Anyway love the content and I think you're the real deal!
This is such a good example of your teaching. Take something that is sort of intuitive to musicians once you're used to it but breaking it down to meaningful, digestible chunks! Oh, also I like your perspective on "never play a b9 but wait... we always play V7b9 chords..."!
I would add instrument timbre, of course this is only for piano but the same chord on electric keys & synths can sound much more consonant or dissonant. I found it myself trying to play guitar parts and having to change them cause they don't really work 1to1 on piano
Definitely! And that’s part of what I’m getting at with tone. With different pianos and different pianos, different amounts of dissonants are possible.
"invites resolution". Yes, for the most part but one possible counter example jumped into my head. An augmented major 7th chord is pretty dissonant but it doesn't want to go anywhere. To my ears it just wants to hang around in the air being mysterious.
GREAT POINTS! Not just a faster tempo but SHORT comping can solve a lot of dissonance issues. (as you did here, ruclips.net/video/a0HBeES331E/видео.html) As it happens, short comping often happens at medium to fast tempos, whereas long comping is usually reserved for ballads.
5 ways to make dissonance great again: 1. Revolution, 2. Fast tent oh, 3. Spinaltapeity, 4. Stone, and 5. Hide it among a bunch of turds. Okay, I think I got it. But my hearing seems to be off, a bit, today, so folks might want to watch the video themselves, to verify the accuracy of my transcription.
thanks for taking us into the subtleties beyond "never play a flat 9", I'd say you've done your Due Dissonance
My pleasure! Thanks for checking it out, Dave!
Ha!

Sorry for the late reply and thanks so much for this. I appreciate the feedback!
Interviewer: -How much dissonance do you want?
Jazz player: -Yes.

Fantastic discussion!!! Learned a lot.Thank you, Jeremy ⭐🌹⭐ Resolution is the solution.

I’d think of each note individually. Each note (in my opinion) has a pull
We need more world conquerer advices 🎉

Sense of humor coming through...so funny, do i really know what "quotient" means?
