I see you have some SS brewtech in the background very nice! All my brewing and fermenting equipment in my setup is SS brewtec, great equipment hope to see your reviews on it soon.
Hi Guys! I am looking at purchasing a wireless hydrometer and this unit is quit an interesting way to calculate S.G. What about high krausen blow off? That can get messy. Great video guys. Cheers.
Hi Jo - I used the PLAATO airlock a lot when I was going to an office most days. Now that I work from home, I don't need to monitor my fermentor remotely. I like it. I found the activity and temperature recording fascinating. - John
Nice review and overview. I have several concerns with the product. As several Below have commented what about if the fermentation is so active it gets into the airlock? What if the bung for the carboy is not quite seated and you get a leak? And what if someone using the Brew Bucket that the lid is not real tight on? I think it's a neat idea. The Tilt looks to me to be the most solid device out there, but it is costly. Cheers guys! 👍🍻
I would imagine it's a closed system and any blow off would not be a problem. I am speculating at least....be very strange if they didn't think of that aspect. The reason I got a tilt was for me to stop poking around and taking samples. That is at least how I am justifying it. :)
Thanks Brian - yes, all the above are concerns. Here's the set up I am using that I think is making it work. I am using my 6.5 gallon carboy for this 5 gallon batch so my krausen is at safe levels. The bung I am using for the glass carboy seals tightly so that I feel confident that the bubbles per minute are as accurate as possible. I would like to give this a try with my Big Mouth Bubbler...that will be a test to see how this device performs with a different fermentor. - John
I always liked the data stream it provided. I think its a great way to catch a ferment that might be heading off the rails early and you can take action. You need to use it enough that you get familiar with how a ferment for a specific yeast in a specific beer looks. But if you had a house beer you make over and over then watching the profile evolve is pretty cool and helpful. Cheers! -Mike
I wonder what happens when the fermentation gets violent and comes up and into this device? All of my ales need a blow off hose and I usually ferment at 66 F.
Chris Storey thought the exact same thing. Other issues: poor seal on your fermenter could affect readings, the fermentation temperature will be different and than what you’re getting from ambient readings, and given that it must be plugged in, you probably cant lager in a ferm chamber being that it needs to be plugged in unless you don’t mind an extension cord hanging out of your freezer... I just can’t see this being worth it for even an advanced homebrewer.
I was thinking the very same things. Over a 100.00 for a airlock that counts bubbles doesn't seem worth it to me. I'd rather put that money into something else on my beer system.
The counter and the mechanics of the thing actually sit outside of the airlock itself. Its a small ring like structure that the thin neck of the airlock slides into. But that is a good question for PLAATO regarding a big foamy blow off. Cheers! -Mike
@@avrillabean Mine is on the way so I'll give it a shot when it gets here, but my thinking in terms of power is possibly to use a little battery pack to run it off of. It's likely such a small draw of power that even a small one should last the fermentation period no problem. But I'll try it out and let you know.
Hey guys, awesome video. Somebody sent me to your direction, I saw somebody somewhere use storage boxes instead of fvs as you can stack them. Is it something you do? Also any tips? Keep up the awesome work 👊🏻🍻

YES! We should tee up a brew session/review of that piece of equipment. - John
I always wondered about that device. Dig the WiFi option. I just got a tilt hydrometer to track gravity via Bluetooth.
Cool - yes, I have been happy with the connectivity. I have not had any issues with the device capturing and reporting data via my WiFI connection.

When I have used the PLAATO, I make sure I have enough headspace in the fermentor so I don't have that problem. - John
Any updates of the unit?

I think that's a fine justification. - John
So i just got one of these for my bday. Are you still using it , is it any good

Storage boxes instead of FVS? I am not sure what FVS means. - John
Sitting at work, app received notification. “ SITREP; spraying foam, burble burble, should have used blow-off tube, burble..”
Ha - I haven't seen that yet. - John
Thanks for the Plaato Airlock Review :)
You're welcome. I am having a good experience with it. - John
I just worry about any of the crazy wort I get sometimes that needs a blow off tube
I used it with my 6.5 gallon carboy so I was confident it wasn't going to blow off. That was a concern of mine but I had to try it.
Well.. this didn't help AT ALL!! Haha where's the review? It's just a talk about what the box hopes it will do..
I think it works well in terms of monitoring your fermentation. It was a little off in calculating the FG. - John
