    Tried with 95% ethyl alcohol, and with a little encouragement from a thin guitar pick and a small screwdriver, it worked like a charm. Thank you!

    Great trick. I had no bottle of petrol handy, so tried this trick with White Spirit. It works just the same, just rub it really well into the join all the way round using a paper towel, give it a minute to allow it to seep in, then prise open with a gentle slight twist of a knife along the recessed join so no cosmetic damage caused. Thanks !!!!!!!

    It worked like a charm! I putted half an inch of gasoline in a glass, putted in a straw, closed other end of with my finger. opened it above adapter. Repeated it on other side of adapter. Not 1 minute later i could open it just by hand! Neat trick! Thanks a lot!

    It doesn't work like a charm, but it does work. I was able to open the adapter fairly easy. And I was worried how to open it without having to bang it with a hammer (that usually busts the adapter).
    I don't understand the dislikes for this video though. If you are not contributing, then go take your dislikes somewhere else, not to the person who took the time and effort to show his method to help fellow humans.
    Thanks to the uploader.

    Also, dry the charger thoroughly after using gasoline on it before you decide to energize and test the charger. It's flammable and not to mention conductive

    For those who think that you can buy only petrol with residue: there is petrol with no residue at all. Use that one if you so worried. Also why would you use half liter of petrol? You only need about 1 to 5 ml of it. apply it with syringe and you are done. Just think before you do thats all you need.The buy on the video clearly used tooooooo much of it.

  • @7smr
    @7smr 8 лет назад +13

    Petrol (short for petroleum) is the British word for gasoline. Any chemical that is made from gasoline such as kerosene or petroleum distillates will work. alcohol should work as well. Basically you are melting the plastic at the seam. I would recommend using nitrile gloves since gasoline has benzene in it which can cause cancer. Nice technique.

    • @chrisbloodworth72
      @chrisbloodworth72 5 лет назад +5

      Alcohol does nothing to open these types of boxes. They are not glued, they are ultra-sonically welded. Alcohol does not affect most plastics. And most wall plugs are made from ABS. Acetone will loosen the weld. But it also ruins the box.
      There is something fishy about this video. I am going to test this on some of my sealed boxes. But I don't think this really works.

    Thanks a lot for this video. Ants had infested my laptop adapter and it stopped working. I had no clue how to open the adapter, but after watching your video, I used petrol and was able to open it up pretty easily. I put drops of petrol using cotton and waited for 5 min, then used a thin screwdriver to gently push the halves apart. I then cleaned out all the ants from the adapter and it started working just fine :)

  • @gregriley1708
    @gregriley1708 8 лет назад +16

    Caution: the petrol can leak into the charger. I advise using 91% alcohol as it will leak minimal amount of solvent into the chargers components. I only had alcohol and used this method to loosen up the glue, then pried it open with a knife and hammer. I didn't have to use nearly as much force as I have in the past using knife and hammer only.

    Just finished and it worked well using gasoline. I use only a little gasoline in a cup because it is so volatile and dangerous. I saw someone used mineral spirits (like paint thinner) and this would be much safer. After a minute or two of repeated soakings I used a cutter blade to run down the seams, which helped it split. It came apart cleanly.

    Note: One can use Mostenboker's Liftoff Tape Remover (MLTR) as a substitute chemical for the gasoline, in order to open the Laptop Adapter. MLTR is apparently made from petroleum distillates, and it's the same kind of stuff found in lighter fluid. So, one can use lighter fluid too!

    Good to know that petrol (gasoline here) will undo the adhesive. That could be useful for more than just laptop chargers.
    Note to others: you should be very careful with petrol/gasoline, as it can explode. Don't do this right beside a window in direct sunlight- it might not cause an issue, but if it explodes, you've got a multitude of issues, and the adapter is probably irrecoverable. Don't burn down your house.

    "It is most likely a petroleum based glue, all you would need is to saturate a towel with gasoline and let it sit [...] for a couple hours... put plastic wrap or a garbage bag against it so it doesn't evaporate away as quickly and reduces fumes in the vicinity, and of course don't do it in an area where there could be flames or sparks.
    Of course use of WD-40 or other petroleum solvents are safer than gasoline, but people have been using gas [...] since the beginning, it is merely a matter of being mindful of what you are doing."
    From instructables

    Always unplug first and wait for capacitors to discharge (might take extremely long, mostly minutes, rarely hours, only in extreme cases days). Fuel is extremely explosive, you dont want it to catch fire, while the bottle is still close by.
    Also I wonder what would happen to the coilcoating and stuff.
    If that really works like that on glue, how wouldnt the copper coating of coils or other parts be unaffected?
