I Love your tutorials. You never make me feel stupid for clarifying simple things and make more complex things simple. I know how to knit largely due to you. Thank you
Omg I was just going to sign up for a class that costs $65 dollars at a local yarn shop (not including supplies) to explain the same thing you just did. You're making me want these needles!!
Even when you say it so many times, being able to see the actual technic as it goes, makes it super didactic! Well, I learn something today!!! So thank you!
I am just now confident enough in my Knitting to attempt helical knitting. Thank you, +VeryPinkKnits, for a such a well explained, flawlessly executed, easy to understand tutorial. Well done! You explained perfectly 🥰 I will be saving this to my watch list so I can refer back as/if needed.
Great video showing how to carry your yarn! This is the cleanest edge I've seen. Also, great visual on carrying yarn when knitting in the round. This one is going in my Knit Encyclopedia playlist. Love your work... I've been watching for years. ❤
Hi Stacy! Always a pleasure watching your tutorials and this one was so timely for me. I'm a bit of an advance beginner and I've been looking and practicing how to knit a hat in the round and using two colors. Not kidding I've spent a whole afternoon trying and trying and watching videos, oh well? Gracias, gracias Stacy. P.S. I love your little pep talks.
Thanks so much for another great video! A bonus is now I have a great excuse to buy a second of the "specialty treat myself" bulky hand dyed yarn. My first thick 'n thin too. I know I can count on you for great tips and detailed video instruction :)
I've been a victim of color pooling! Thanks for the video. Now I've been enlightened. (btw I bought the 16" KP nova platina interchangeables last fall after seeing them on one of your videos and love them. )
Joan Luiz I am finding Portuguese knitting really easy to learn with your videos. Currently working on perfecting my tension. Perhaps a video about how to keep your tension even with Portuguese knitting?
Love your videos! Love watching you knit (I need to learn to flick better) and love seeing the yarns. Most importantly, I learned something about my new circular needles (ie using the key) - who knew? Thanks!!!
I would love for you to do a tutorial on holding the needles and yarn the way you do ...it just looks so smooth and effortless...mine is so clumsy and my hands hurt!
I'm knitting socks - so I really don't care if they don't match or if there is color pooling - but this is great information for some larger items that I have in the works.
Thank you so much! I know this an old post but I’m struggling with my work -either of these: a) not joined, like if I drop and don’t pick up from underneath or b) not looking tight and tangled at least on the inside when I’m trying to “catch” the new yarn with the old (or worse, tight and tangled on the outside!). Now to try to solve the problem of the red pooling from being in the exact same spot on both yarns! So many nuances that I don’t think people understand when they say, “that’s a great sweater! now start on mine!” 😡🤬🤯🤯🤯😵💫😵💫😵💀
I am planning on knitting a baby blanket with an i-cord side edge (thank you so much for that video!). Is it still possible to alternate skeins with an i-cord side edge and if yes, how would I go about doing that? Thank you in advance!
Hi! As I watch this, I’m wondering if it isn’t just the same as helical knitting. Without the twist of yarns wouldn’t it eliminate the cable at the changing point? Now I need to try this to find out!
If you have a big project that is going to use 4 or greater skeins of hand dyed yarn, what is your recommendation for changing to the next two balls to make sure that there is not a major change in the flow of color?
I've been alternating with 2 balls of yarn and am close to binding off. How would you recommend dropping the first ball of yarn before binding off with the second? Simply weave it in or a different technique? Thanks!
Interesting! I've knitted mostly with hand dyed yarns and I find the shift of colours absolutely mesmerizing. However, I have never experienced this "colour pooling". Maybe the German ladies that dye the yarn are complete pros at this? :)
Hi Staci! I want to attach a scalloped piece to a flat piece. I've seen pix of 3 needle bind off but no clear video of a "join". Do you have a video? Thanks, Ruth Shields
This image makes it pretty clear - the colors in the yarn are contrasting, which really shows off how the colors pooled badly. "Badly" mainly because the two socks do not match! simplysockyarn.typepad.com/.a/6a00d83452e09e69e201310fe4aefa970c-pi
Great tutorial has always. I am wondering if you would give us your opinion on Zing Circular needles. Would you recommend them and for the best items to knit with them. I understand they are made by Knitters Pride.
Thank you so much for this video! Would you recommend alternating skeins in the ribbing of a sock pattern cuff down or waiting until you got to the actual stockinette section.I will be doing a 2 x 2 ribbing and wondering when I should start alternating skeins to avoid pooling and to help with the blending. Thank you so much!
Yes, it's always a good idea to split it up if you're using hand dyed yarns. I'd split it half and half, this video explains how to do that: ruclips.net/video/kNdLF8gVWhI/видео.html
What if I am knitting in reverse stockinette (where the knit side is on the inside)? I am working on a pattern and am having a hard time getting this technique down.
I am doing a top down raglan sweater with short rows after the ribbing then raglan increases on the yoke. There are also raglan increases on the short rows. Do you recommend alternating skeins right away or after all the short rows are complete?
Hello. My question is about when alternating skeins I’ve seen tutorials where several stitches are slipped before switching skeins. Is this necessary, because you don’t do that in this tutorial. Thank you.
Can you do this with 3 or 4 balls of yarn? I’m making a sweater from one of your patterns, but it calls for 6 skeins of yarn at 110 yd/skein. I have 4 skeins of 200yd/skein and am wondering how I can alternate them all to make the colors in the sweater look consistent and nice. Do I just do two at a time until I run out and then start the other two? One of the balls is very colored/speckled, one has barely any, and two are in the middle, so I know I definitely need to alternate but I’m not sure how to get it looking evenly distributed!
Hi Staci - I am wanting to make the Hitchiker scarf that uses 150g of yarn. The yarn I used only came in 100g hanks though, so I used up 50g of one for something else, and now have one 100g ball, and one 50g ball. Should I just split the 100g into two 50g balls? Thanks
Do you alternate the same way if you are working short rows? I just knit a sweater with hand dyed yarn and the pattern called for some short rows after joining the sleeves to raise the back neck a little (bottom up raglan construction, knit body tube, knit sleeves, join then knit up to neck.). I alternated everywhere except the short rows. Looks ok but just wonder if I should have done it there too.
You can really only alternate yarn balls when you reach the end of the row or round, so the few (or many) short rows you work wouldn't alternate every two rows/rounds. If that was my project, I would still alternate two balls of yarn every time I reached the end of the row/round.
Sherry Brandenburg it's to prevent color pooling in the project. Doing this keeps the colors randomly dispersed and you don't end up with ugly blobs of color.
Also, because of the nature of hand dying, sometimes two different skeins of the same colorway can be slightly different. The overall color(s) might be darker or lighter, etc. When changing to a new skein of yarn, you might run the risk of a drastic line across your work from the slight differences from one skein to the next. Most notable in a garment or large shawl knit in tonals or speckles.
I find it very hard to learn how to knit, i'm looking for a basic knitting pattern that will teach me how to knit with circular needles, just a hat for me an my 1 year old grand daughter, the problem is that I don't know what size needle to purchase size and length for size f acrylic yarn, I can crochet but knitting OMG can anyone help what needles?? What Yarn?? I hate DK yarn. Thanks
Staci, thanks for this clear demonstration. I was wondering two things. (1) If you are using two new balls of yarn, do you knit both strand pulled from the inside or one strand from the inside and one from the outside? (2) If you are making two balls of yarn from one new one to accommodate this technique, do you wind one from the inside of the big ball and one from the outside, or do you wind them both from one source? Thanks! I learn something from every video.
If the yarn is dyed like the yarns I show here in this video, it shouldn't matter. If the yarn is dyed in long color segments with distinct color breaks - that is a bit different. That kind of yarn is meant to create large sections of the same color, so it is probably not necessary to use two balls at once (or choose a different yarn if you don't want the color segments to show).
Love your pod casts...I have a problem..I just knitted a hat and it is HUGE. (Quele domage) (how do you like my french?) (that's the extent of it). Exactly what I need right now! I'm getting ready to swatch for a shawl using two skeins of hand dyed.

The way you knit is so beautiful! I wish I could figure out how to do it
I love Knitter Pride needles. Also enjoy your videos!
Thanks, Stack! Just what I needed to see, just WHEN I needed to see it!
Thank you for this! I am still fairly new to knitting and never even thought to use 3 different balls of yarn to avoid the color pooling.
Fantastic video. Thank you so much!
Informative video. Especially with wrapping the yarn. Thank you.
You are really my hero ,you make things very much easier, thanks a lot.
You are so knowledgeable and talented!!! Thank you!
No longer afraid of working with two yarns ... thank you!
The yarn is so beautiful! I love it, but Twisted Owl at Etsy is on break...so sad to need to wait.
I’m getting pretty good, thanks to you!
I love Knitter's Pride :) I have interchangables in a few different materials and lengths (short vs regular)
This is wonderful! I got my first balls of hand dyed yarn and wa storied I’d half to cut the yarn each time I changed? Thank god.
Fantastic idea! Makes perfect sense.
Awesome, you are such a great teacher! I have learned so much from you!!
Thank you for your videos. Could you demonstrate how to get an argyle pattern by intentionally using color pooling?
oh I love that chunky yarn-- so cute! Thanks for the tutorial--I always refer to you for help.
How would you handle yarn overs in hellical knitting?
Super result! Thank you for that new interesting information.
Brilliant!
Really interesting! Thank you for the tips! And those yarns (both for the flat piece and the hat) were so pretty and cute! ^^
Thank you! I made a pair of socks that I kinda hate because of the color pooling. Now I know to aviod pooling the future.
Thank you, I look forward to your opinion.😊
I would love for you to do a tutorial on holding the needles and yarn the way you do ...it just looks so smooth and effortless...mine is so clumsy and my hands hurt!
The way I knit is called "flicking", and I have two videos that demonstrate this method. Here is one of them: ruclips.net/video/DmEGLLbbRB4/видео.html
I'm knitting socks - so I really don't care if they don't match or if there is color pooling - but this is great information for some larger items that I have in the works.

Thank you for the information. I wasn't quite sure what pooling meant.
The cast on on the hat looks very interesting. Is there a tutorial for it?
Wonderful information as always. I'm curious why you like the 16" cord so much. What else would you use that length for?
Thank you 🌸
If you have a big project that is going to use 4 or greater skeins of hand dyed yarn, what is your recommendation for changing to the next two balls to make sure that there is not a major change in the flow of color?

Just cut one ball, BO, and weave in both ends. No special technique necessary.
What if you want the color to pool? I've seen lots of videos for "planned pooling" in crochet, but how would you do that in knitting?
Very neat looking.. Thanks..💜💜😎
You are the BEST! ! !
The chunky is adorable! But I really liked the other yarn you were using for the flat demo. What is that yarn?
Interesting! I've knitted mostly with hand dyed yarns and I find the shift of colours absolutely mesmerizing. However, I have never experienced this "colour pooling". Maybe the German ladies that dye the yarn are complete pros at this? :)

Very helpful. Thank you!

I recommend altering the hand dyed yarns at the beginning of the project.
VeryPink Knits Thank you so much!
How do I end the alternating yarn on straight needles?
If i am knitting a shawl with 1 100g skein of hand dyed yarn? should i split it and alternate or not? If so how should i split the skein? Thank you!
Yes, it's always a good idea to split it up if you're using hand dyed yarns. I'd split it half and half, this video explains how to do that: ruclips.net/video/kNdLF8gVWhI/видео.html

Do you ever use the other end of your working yarn ( same skein) to alternate ?
Some people are happy doing that...I don't like the tangled mess!
Are cables easy with out cable neeldes
The "Twisted Owl" Etsy shop isn't open any more.
ok, but how do you start with the 2nd skein?
Just start knitting with it at the beginning of your row/round...leave yourself about 6 inches of tail to weave in.
Have you ever used hand die yarn to make a sweater? If yes, how hard was it
What's the point in wrapping and changing? I'm not getting it. Are you saying it's because of the even sides of ur project?
Sherry Brandenburg it's to prevent color pooling in the project. Doing this keeps the colors randomly dispersed and you don't end up with ugly blobs of color.

You'll always find all of the information about everything you see in my videos in the video description field, just below the video.

How do you bind off when working with two yarns?
Usually you just want to bind-off with just one color, unless the pattern tells you otherwise.
