As someone w/ generalized anxiety disorder, I understand doodling in YOUR notebook or papers. But like, vandalizing the desks which others have to use/clean is just rude. Then using anxiety as an excuse? That's low for people (which is a lot more than you'd expect) w/ anxiety who need outlets to ground themselves back to reality

    • @lunarsprinkle6580
      @lunarsprinkle6580 2 года назад +21

I draw on the desks when I'm super bored then I erase it sometimes or make it small. Its usually just shapes like stars or diamonds, nothing too graphic. I do it for other people to see some history on the desk. If there are drawings that are inappropriate I erase them, but their always by other students so it doesnt bother me too much. It's just digusting on my desk though. I sometimes do animal drawings to cheer people up since most of my classes are so boring and our desks cant have anything on them. Or they sometimes dont allow drawing at all so I cant have paper on my desk at instruction time.

    • @grace-4105

Exactly! I'm 27, and many people doodle in meetings and zoom calls on their notebooks all the time in every office I worked in. But if a grown adult with anxiety started to draw on the office desk it would be so weird 🤣 I think a lot of things they tell you in school that "prepare you for the adult world" is BS, but this is fair enough.

At my high school, (general rules) the rule was you get 1 warning, then the next time the teacher takes it until the ends of class, and then if it happens again, it gets confiscated to the office until the end of the day. But each teacher might be more lenient with phones, or more strict (you’ll have to put it in a phone dock), but generally it just has to be silenced and away unless you’re in lunch or study hall

Also, not all schools are great and sometimes things can happen in the bathroom. We've had everything from drugs, fighting, and..."inappropriate contact with another student" in the bathrooms. So when something like that happens, people want to know when the kid left and how long they were gone. For example, sometimes there's just a HAZE of vape smoke in the bathrooms, to the point of making it unusable. Even if the kid who was vaping is gone, it's really easy to say "hmm, well we have Tommy, who was gone from science class for six minutes, Jesse, who was gone from math class for ten minutes, and George, who's been gone from English class for forty minutes and still isn't back yet. Who could possibly have been vaping?" Another time we had a kid straight up punch the soap dispensers, which aparently damaged them. Since there were only a few kids who used the bathroom in that time, they were eventually able to narrow it down to the kid that did it. So if some sort of rule is broken while you're using the bathroom, the adults can figure out who did it.

I agree, we really need to not only pay teachers more but also teach students to respect them. But I must say that teachers have to be patient, kids are not going to be perfect and they have to be calm and supportive when it comes to kids. For example, if a student is drawing on the desk due to anxiety, perhaps the teacher should have provided the student a white board or sheet of paper for them to draw on instead.
You have to realize how unaccepting the school system is of neurodivergent people, like for example if a student has ADHD. If the student requires something to draw on during class to help them focus on the lesson, they should be able to do that, and if they’re drawing on the desk a different resource to draw on should be provided.
Each student is different which means that teachers have to be really really patient with everyone, which I understand can be tedious, but it’s important to try to make the learning experience a positive one for all students!
Anyways, sorry, just wanted to provide my take. I also feel bad for the poor teacher getting bombarded on TikTok- the commenters are being unfair.

Like vandalizing someone else’s property is not a good coping mechanism, and people shouldn’t have to bend over backwards and let you RUIN THEIR STUFF because it makes you feel better. Literally just use paper.

    1. Just draw on paper

    3. Janitors are not paid to clean up vandalism and don't have the time to clean every desk thoroughly
Students are just sometimes mindlessly destructive. It's not malicious but it is annoying. Completely unnecessary to stab holes through erasers, snap pencils in half, leave garbage everywhere, put gum on stuff, or draw all over nondrawing materials.

Honestly, with the drawing on table thing, no one ever considers the cleaning staff and I think that's very disrespectful. My mother is a cleaning lady at my ex school and any drawings that are left at the end of the day take away a bunch of time in their tight shift schedule. Yes, maybe one pencil drawing isn't an issue, but imagine having to clean 25 or more rooms worth of them with minimal time, while also having to clean everything else. It is worse with ballpoint pens, which do not come off easily, especially if they've been left for a while, as is the case with markers. For those you actually need to take out even more time and special cleaning material, which can get you stuck on one table for up to 30 minutes. Not to mention anything that doesn't come off is likely to get you yelled at by supervisors during inspections, even though they do not work at schools and don't know what it is like. So while the student may not think drawing on the table is a big deal, it makes someone else's day much easier to just draw on paper. The teacher is being respectful by watching out for other people.

I went through school without any accommodations (due to a shit mother), and luckily my teachers were understanding. At our school site, students have been vandalizing the bathrooms, so that’s another thing for teachers to monitor. I have had a few students just walk into other teacher’s classrooms to interrupt/visit their friends. Honestly, I don’t think anything she said on her Tiktoks were bad. I think it’s missing the key element of rapport that teachers build with students.
Phone policies, desk drawing, bathroom rules are all things that teachers have to enforce from the school site/district; it’s like being upset at a cashier when they tell you to put a mask on? Of all the things teachers could be put on blast for (racism, sexism, ableism, etc.), I don’t think this teacher in particular deserves it.

Relating to the “anxiety is an excuse to vandalize school property” thing, I just thought how weird it is that some people use their mental illnesses/disorders to rationalize their bad behaviors that actually affect others.
When I was in secondary school, a kid in my class frequently bullied me, both physically and mentally. It got so bad to the point that he was cutting off my hair IN CLASS, while I was crying and unable to fight back. After that, his mom was forced to come to my house and apologize to me on behalf of her son. And you know what, SHE DID NOT FEEL GUILTY FOR SH*T. She told me that her son has ADHD, that’s why he did what he did and hopefully I will understand when I’m older.
Okay, so your son’s ADHD somehow excuse him from the fact that he’s been bullying me for a year now? So I’m just gonna blame the suicidal thoughts on myself?

I have nothing to project. Now, I don't think peoole should be taking it out on her or being childish in the comments, but clearly there's a reason why people have swarmed her page. Imagine making a tiktok and it's dedicated to "POV Im your mom and I tell you to clean your room". Everyone can relate to being a little lazy, so no matter how much context you give about how the room was outrageously dirty (at a level that was unacceptable for most viewers), it will still invoke negative emotions because of their own memories. She also doesn't show what she's dealing with, she doesn't set it up so you can empathise with her, so people default to empathising with the student because most of us have been there before. Moreover, no matter how justified a teacher is in something like taking your phone, it just doesn't feel good being caught slacking. Even if you rationally understand that you kinda had it coming, most people understand the shitty feeling of getting in trouble when they deserved it. So it doesn't help her case. This is why people find her annoying even if she's technically right.
And, this whole issue aside, the fact that a grown ass adult is making these videos to prove how justified and respectful she is in communicating with her students is just...weird, especially because she doesn't seem to be making a point about healthy student-teacher dynamics/healthy punishment to other teachers, but rather, pandering to kids and highlighting herself as a teacher better than what most people have. Yeah, I get in theory that nobody wants to have to ask to go to the bathroom but anyone who thinks that kids will NEVER just hang out there on their phones half the class and use it to skip has some serious rose colored glasses on. If they do have a medical condition that causes them to stay in the bathroom, that can be super embarrassing and being asked about it out of the blue would suck.
Better to address it neutrally without saying either "do you have takes-too-long-to-poop-itis" or "I accuse you of doing non bathroom things on your bathroom breaks" because you don't know what's going on, by definition you can't see them.

So, her asking about the medical conditions regarding bathroom use is actually a legitimate policy. Some students abuse their bathroom privileges to wander the school and avoid class, so if a student is going every single day and is gone for over 10 minutes every time... they can miss up to an hour of instructional time during a week, which adds up and affects grades. Teachers are also still responsible for their students whereabouts when they're out. They can get in trouble for what the kids do while they're out.
As well, with the school officer coming to pick up the phone, that's most likely a school specific policy that admin implemented to defer liability. If the teacher handles the phone, they could get attacked by the student or break it and that's a whole mess the school doesn't want to deal with. Having the officer take the phone would prevent possible backlash as they are armed.
And if you're still reading and think any of that is fucked up for a teacher to deal with, then welcome to the world of education!

Teachers are sent an email on what accommodations you're entitled to without the specifics of why you get them. If they start aggressively pressing for more information than they're privy to; you can complain to the education access center if you have one and get approval from them. If there's something going on that means the kid CAN and HAS TO stay out of class for a third of the time, then that should've been disclosed beforehand and is almost grounds for a different kind of education or extra lessons/work.
It's also a lot nicer to go "hey, kid" instead of "I've contacted your parents immediately, without even saying anything to you".
Not like the teacher needs to know your exact medication and address of your doctor's office. It'd just be nice to know if you're in danger of collapsing/allergic/in excruciating pain in certain scenarios so those can be adjusted. it makes sense, you have to have a reason to be out of the class. The teacher is responsible for their students, if anything happens during class and someone gets hurt, it's their fault. If the student is not in the classroom, the teacher can't keep an eye on them but will still be held responsible if anything happens. Besides, many students are literally being disrespectful and smug and use toilet breaks for just skipping class so it's totally understandable if the teacher gets suspicious about someone's behaviour if they leave the class often but as said, a simple chat after class is enough if you have a condition or other reason - just let the teacher know, be fair to them so they can be fair to you.

As a teacher-student and substitute teacher in Sweden we have a no phone rule in the classroom (with a dedicated bin) they hand in the phones at the beginning of class and get them back at the end. If I catch anyone with a phone I get the bin and let them put it in themselves since it is their property. The only exception is if a student have to take a call and I just remind them kindly to keep the phone away while waiting for the call. Never had an issue…
The restroom brakes: I remind everyone that if they are leaving for the restrooms/ getting a snack/ refilling their water bottles give me a heads up and return as soon as possible. Sometimes I catch maybe 1-2 student slacking or playing table tennis which gives them 5min absence.
And since I have a bit of a streak of dark humour within me, when I have to get coffee/ go to the restroom or get supplies I tell the class “Don’t kill anyone and don’t burn anything down” and when returning 2-3 minutes later “Oh great, everyone is alive!” + when the students inform me about their restroom break I also say “Don’t die” which is either met by confusion or a chuckle and the reply “I can’t make any promises!”

As a teacher, I can tell you that there is NOTHING you can do to force a student to pay attention to your subject. If the students are showing a total disinterest that speaks more of YOUR teaching style. If even after doing your best to make the class interactive the students aren't paying attention, there's NOTHING you can do. Take away the phone? They'll doodle. Tell them to stop doodling? They'll play with their pencils. Tell them to stop doing that? They'll at this point be so agravated by the constant telling them what not to do that they won't be able to concentrate at all, especially teens who haven't got the emotion-regulation thing down yet. A much better tactic is to understand that everyone has their off-day, and if they can't pay attention that day, hopefully they can use your hour of class to reset, calm down, self soothe, so they can at least pay attention to the lesson after yours. Surely they can ready up on what they missed later. This will make students respect you and like you more for being understanding towards them and their insane workload that CAN cause burn-out, and also allows the OTHER students who ARE paying attention to have an uninterrupted lesson.

I've had teh most atrocious shitty teachers ever, but I also was lucky enough to have parents who are teachers, and had a select few wonderful teachers of my own so I can see both sides. at some point, the problem is the student alone. students can have insane work loads, but so do the teachers, especially good teachers. half the problem with teaching is admin honestly, even when you have great students you love. I truly don't like how one sided your statement feels. teens are always gonna be emotional and crap, so what? other teens listen. other teens were raised with respect or innately listen and see the value of not using their phones even if they can't pay attention. an effort needs to be made. and not every teacher has teh energy to baby and do make up works or remedies for a student not trying. like teachers have a workload as well, and they are also adults with outside lives. they often have bills to pay and adult responsibilities unlike students, and they need to constantly find workarounds and alternatives? no. for the few amazing teachers I had that went out of their way to do those things, I appreciate them. because I know it wasn't each investing so much effort in something that doesn't always work out. thankfully, I always utilised their opportunities so I didn't waste their efforts.

as someone who goes to school in austria, its normal to give your phone when school starts. its LITERALLY in the school rules! that you need to give your phone to the teacher, who then puts it in a desk and then in a cabinet which then gets locked with a key so the kids cant take it in the 5-min breaks. also if a teacher(at least in my school idk if its the same in others) catches you with your phone/that you have your ohone on you, they, if it happens for the first time, tell you to put your phone next to the others, if it happens for the second time, they take your phone with them for the rest of the day, and if you geth caught three times, your phone will end up at the principal office and your parents/Guardian has to pick it up. and seeing ppl get so worked up over something thats so normal for me makes me realize how intitle some ppl online think they are. and i watched this vid 100s of time and i never can understand how this teacher can get sooo much hate. like she is probably one of the chillest teacher i seen in a while online. like other teachers wont even let youe DRINK WATER and she is over here letting her students eat, be on their phones when the lesson is very long, AND isnt like one of those teachers who doesnt allow you to go to the bathroom and blames you for it. and there are many of those teacher in my school.

I’ve been homeschooled all my life so I’ve gone to a homeschool group. The way the group would work is this huge group of kids from ages 5 to 18 and their moms. There were 10 classes, which were the daycare-ish thing with the kids under the age of 5, the next class up had kids from preschool to kindergarten, the next class was 1st grade-3rd grade, then the next class had 4th grade to 6th grade, the next class had 7th graders, next had 8th graders, 9th grade, 10th grade, 11th grade, and 12th grade. There was also a program for kids from 3rd grade to 6th grade that you would go to in the afternoon. In the elementary classes there would be the kids parents sitting in. So basically you would need to tell the parent next to you that you’re going to the bathroom and that would be fine. I was always the lucky one to sit next to the nice adults.

As a person who draws to cope with my anxiety, it really isn’t that hard to pull out a notebook or have scratch paper on hand to draw on when I need it. I think the teacher is in the right. It’s a different story when they don’t let me doodle at all, but they’re just looking out for the school property, and they don’t get new desks or chairs often so they have to make sure to take care of the ones they get.

She seems like a very reasonable teacher, I would have much preferred to have her over many of my secondary teachers I've had, and I was a kid good, albeit with attention difficulties!
I actually had a teacher grab the paper I was drawing on (my own paper) and throw it in the bin without saying a word. THOSE are the ones who misguide their frustrations and those who are in it for power that I dislike. This teacher seems to actually respect her student. The people who don't like her are just the disrespectful disruptive teens who would get in trouble, hah. I'm a real shame she's getting flack.

I don't think that teacher was in it "for the power". Its simply because they've had to tell students to stop messing around so many times that they are just tired of it and instead of wasting time trying to be nice to you, will simply take it off you without any kind of temper tantrum. I had teachers simply walk up to kids and grab their phones off them if they were seen using them, it was simple and effective. If they had a problem with it then they could just leave the class, because lesson time is for learning, not going on your phone.

You are legally allowed to ask your students if they have medical condition. This is actually the preferred way to deal with students who are taking long bathroom breaks as they could be skipping. Instead of accusing them, you ask them if everything is okay.
I have Tourette’s and would often leave the classroom if I felt like i was ticking too much and my teacher would come find me if I was gone too long and asked if I was okay, usually if I didn’t come back it was because I went to the nurse, having a tic attack.
Also with the phone thing, I’m in high school and am on my phone all day. I wear my headphones and usually listen to a video like this while doing school work. My teachers 1) don’t care because I have straight A’s and 2) only get onto the students with their phones out who are failing their class or when we’re taking a test.

Yeah. She's first addressing the possibility of a physical health issue that may need addressing, but the discussion is ultimately about the reason WHY the student is skipping most of her class. It could be a health issue, but in many cases it's their mental health, attitude to the class or relationship with the teacher. It seems a bit cynical in the way she acted it, but overall it's supposed to be a way to approach the issue that makes it clear that the goal of the confrontation is not punishment but accommodation.

    • @lainaballls
      @lainaballls 2 года назад +12

@@donutstew4117 Exactly, teachers don’t know if you’re using that class to recover from other classes being difficult or if they’re being bullied. So it’s best to approach the situation with no anger and with compassion for whatever the student is going through.

I’m in high school and there are no punishments for having phones out. It’s frowned upon to use them in class, but the teachers don’t call you out or confiscate your phone if they see it out. A lot of my classmates use them frequently. There’s kind of a “mind your own business” mentality and if you aren’t paying attention and subsequently your grades suffer, that’s completely on you.
