The golden thread is a reference to the song Invisible String which is a song from Folklore (the sister album that came before Evermore, the album this song is from) which is about how she feels that her and her boyfriend were tied together/brought together by fate.

You should watch the video Taylor just put out of her directing behind the scenes of All Too Well the short film. That way you can see how involved she actually is when directing. It’s pretty awesome. I really like how you approach the song as a whole, both with sound of music, her voice, and the lyrics. She definitely uses all three to help tell her story/message. Very cool!

@@tnae yes this will be great to react to. Also to see more of how intelligent she is I reccomend watching her directors on directors interview from variety and thr making of reputation to get to see her songwriting

the video references her song "invisible string" in which she sings "one single thread of gold tied me to you", in the song she kinda says that fate tied these two people together, all these events that happened to them separately yet "isn't just so pretty to think all along there was some invisible string tying you to me" and I do think this video references different stages of her life, like the "intense" part to me is around rep era seeing as in the midst of it all she gets distracted by the string, leaves all the "witch craft" and follows it and enters a space that is "home" where she finds her love interest a.k.a Joe waiting for her, it's around that time she fell in love with Joe and she created that "separate" life from the one underneath the public scrutiny

Thanks for the insightful reaction. First time I've seen someone pick up on the tonal change near the end along with the visual of her coming back to the comfort and warmth of her home. And there he is... the object of her search. Very symbolic in every sense. Her art is magical.

She directed this video. This song is about Joe her boyfriend of 6 yrs, the gold string is the "invisible string", which is a song on her folklore album. So basically it is about destiny.

So you started with Part 2 😂 Cardigan video off Folklore is Part 1 and then there are regencies to Lyrics from Invisible String on Folklore. Having Willow be lead single for Evermore (and like Cardigan, only video she made for Folklore,) since Evermore was the sister album to Folklore… so she was acknowledging the connection between the albums. And like someone else said, song is about Joe (again see lyrics for Invisible String); but she also harkens to her song Seven which is about a young girl at 7 and her special friend… she is just tying it all together.

Lost in your current like a priceless wine…. I always took this as like historically there were many shipwrecks and irreplaceable stuff was lost at sea, the ocean won the battle against the careful transit of something valuable. Same with the relationship… going carefully and then all of a sudden being swept up in someone else, the person you were never to be seen again. Like can’t stop the pull of someone. Or something…I think it’s just meant to give you some watercolor impressions and set the mood. It’s a great lyric. :)

In Hendersonville her parents had a lakeside house. I took the line to mean that anything you spill in the current would be lost; wine (being a liquid) was not something you could pull out. You can dive for a bottle; spilled wine is gone. So she is emotionally swept away by him, changed forever. ymmv

And because she always has multiple stuff going on in lyrics. In regions where the weather didn't support growing grapes, people often made homemade wine from black currents.

lol "can only be that talented at so many things" she made her first music video when she was 16, and has always had top flight directors and film crews. Her brother Austin is an actor, and director of indie films. So, she recognizes good people and hires them. Also, watch her tour videos -- she gets the stage designers to work out how to make _her_ ideas of the stage productions work, so the stagecraft involved would interest you (there are some behind the scenes videos from different tours -- prep, choreo, rehearsals or songwriting bits).

That's a great intro, liked that you didn't cut it. Once again your positivity while remaining open-minded but also being honest enough about what you feel makes you an awesome content creator (at least what I think after seeing around 10 of your videos). It's ok to find a way that works for you to not have to chopt up the video.
Taylor "sucks" at being patience and sadly despite her trying she's a very mediore actress (but she is a good MV director and does the set design for her tours). She can also be petty and revengeful (some of my favorite Taylor songs come from her being like that).
I'm not the best at interpreting lyrics (and English isn't my native tongue) but in my opinion "lost in your current like a priceless wine" is basically Taylor saying "Your charisma is as strong as the currents of the oceans and I'm so into you, that I can't swim and I can only let your current guide me". And by priceless wine, she means something that only gets better with age like a more mature relationship that isn't in the honeymoon phase anymore.
I think only Taylor herself can say what that really means and I tend to like songs more when I go for my personal interpretation of how that song relates to my life or the experiences I know.

Sometimes I feel like crap that someone like Taylor Swift can be so talented and so beautiful. But then I listen to the Midnights album and I realize that self doubt is a human condition and even someone like her feels like she doesn’t measure up sometimes. There’s something comforting in that for me, like if she feels like a mess sometimes too then I’m not wrong for also feeling that way sometimes.

She's pretty much always storyboarded out her videos herself, with input from the directors; and she was a co-producer on all her albums and tour films since 2008. In 2019, she started directing her own videos. This is the only video from Evermore (Dec, 2020). She did only one video for folklore (July, 2020) and the story picks up from that. Gold = true love (is a contrast to her album Red, when she was smitten / angry/ passionate); she started making the distinction after she met Joe Alwyn in 2016. She uses it on Reputation, Lover, folklore, and Evermore in different songs (all about Joe).
The gold rope -thing also relates directly to Invisible String from folklore. "Bait and Switch" were all the bad choices she's made along the way. cf: Long Story Short, on Evermore. Cheers

Lost in your *currant* maybe? Like the fruit, you can make wine from by aging/fermenting it, but also a double entendre for previously describing him like an ocean - so she's lost in him, his current.
