In Trina Robbins' memoir, she writes about visiting the Marvel offices in the 1960's. As the home of Kirby and Doctor Strange, she expected a bunch of hippie stoner dudes (her friends, basically). She has a great moment where she shows up in a super small mini-skirt expecting to meet fellow heads, and was shocked to find that Stan Lee and co. were the biggest squares in the world (i.e., they didn't do drugs). Still, she got along really well with them and had a great afternoon.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Len Wein on stage at the Sydney Opera House in 2013: even he laments that the 1970s bullpen photo you commented on was seemingly the only photo of him from the Marvel bullpen days as well! I think his exact words when the photo came up on the big screen was “that damn hat!”. Apparently he only ever wore it once. He did tell a story about when the entire bullpen wore Mickey Mouse ears hats once, all at the same time, between Stan Lee walking in and out of his office, just to see if he’d notice. Kind of ironic, now that I think about it :P Great episode, got the same book as an Xmas gift a decade ago. They have recently released a newer edition, better spine and sturdier I believe than the original binder version.

Joe Maneely was an ACE. He graduated from my alma mater, a school I also taught art at the last 7 years before it shut down. Maneely is a legend. I love seeing his stuff and hearing people talk about him.

From what I understand the whole Civil War storyline was meant to be an analogy for the patriot act, so in that way putting it right next to the September 11 page makes sense.

Len Wein’s tricourne hat may have been about the Bicentennial celebration being that it 200 years since the American Revolution. 44 years ago. Country’s 244 years old. I was 16 years old working in the City as a messenger that year - same year Taxi Driver came out in theaters - and I remember that day vividly with my family. We picnicked on the Hudson River right near the Lincoln Tunnel helix, watching Operation Sail. All the greatest sailboats I’m schooner class paraded up the River. And naval ships too from aircraft carriers to battleships right past the USS Intrepid on Forty Deuce. May have been the year they stationed that museum there as well.

There's a great TMNT book that has similar little reproduction pieces built in. I don't know if you're aware of that book. The name escapes me at the moment. That would be a cool book to take a look at.

It sounds like you're talking Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Ultimate Visual History by Andrew Farago. Follows the visual history of the different iterations of the Turtles from the beginning up to the time of the book's publishing in 2014. Has lots of facsimile documents and a reprinting of the first issue from Eastman and Laird.

Goodman was a trend follower if nothing else. Once the pulps started dying out he pivoted hard in the 50's into the men's sweat mags or armpit slicks. as they were known. In the 60's across the hall from the comic bullpen was Goodman's men's adventure mag joint. Gary Friedrich (Ghost Rider, Sgt. Fury etc,) worked in both.

I've never held one in my hand, but there was Aspen Magazine in the 60's, which came in a box. Every issue was a different theme and could contain a music disc, a miniature oriental screen, parable cards, booklets, posters. It was very much of the era when print was the medium of counter culture. I think McSweeney's later had at least one issue that was a package of disparate objects.

I'm pretty sure I remember this being available at Costco around Christmas time the year this came out. I flipped through the demo copy a number of times. You see it in remainder bins every now and then. Pretty cool packaging.

Why I love this channel! (David Choe to Marvel, what coverage!) Jim wished that some one would reissue those Marvel character shirts from the 60's. About 10 years ago, Graphitti Designs offered reproductions of those swinging Marvel t-shirts and sweatshirts. I still have a couple.

Martin Goodman was publisher of Marvel and all its various names until 1972. The pulp MARVEL SCIENCE STORIES lasted until 1952 and MARVEL TALES lasted until 1957.
