Really liked you video but reminded me about the time in 1980 when I was framing in a window skylight. I was Standing on top of Ladder with my hammer and a few 16 penny nails and NO! safety glasses. Your hammering Position and swinging action is exacting the same as my eye accident. Lost my left eye for 20yrs and was able to restore it with a lens implant in 2001. I was using a well built hammer but never the less a piece chipped off the head and drove a piece of metal directly though my eye pupil. Just a reminder wear safety glasses Thanks for your video and take care ! Dave
Nice instructional video. The only thing i would add, I think it is easier if you run the return up the rake further, enough to cover the entire width of the siding corner. That way you can just square cut the top of your corner, instead of having to trim it around the return and bringing it up to the overhang. If doing vinyl siding, you can then just return the j-channel that comes down the rake into the corner. If doing wood siding, its even easier. Hope this makes sense
if u dont want a birdy, you can always run jchannel from eave to rake and back to back it with zip screws. Go from vented soffit to plain. Depends on whos building is all. Thanks for the video
Nice video, old school. You will never see this now days. A bunch a babies that what all the equipment and fancy tools. This is the way the road was built.
I think that longer board nailed to the house is going to get in the way of the F channel. I just did one and I had to notch about an inch out of the bottom of the board to make room for the F channel.
I don't use f channel, I put my soffit up first and then put j channel up against the soffit to accept the siding. Sometimes I will also put undersill inside the j channel.
I don't use f channel. I use J channel after I nail my soffit up. I put the j channel up against the soffit and if necessary I put undersill in the j channel.
Very good instructional video and I will put your knowledge to good use. Although my foreman would tell me to take off the building paper and turn it the other way around.
No hes talking about the words being up right I've had builders make my crew remove tyvek and make the words right side up it makes absolutely no sense but some people are picky
Yes, about the nail gun, I have one too. But, I try and show the average homeowner that probably wouldn't have a nail gun how to do the job. A framing square will work too. Thanks for your reply.
@@doityourselfdenniscom I put some bracing on the sides until I put the siding & roofing...Maybe the roofing/decking will tighten it up? Or should I do the siding first? Thanks!!
@@fastestmanon3legs454 What kind of siding are you planning to use? Normally regardless of the type siding, you should put plywood on the sides first, then the roof, then the siding. You don't have to neccesarily put the finish on the roof, but at the least dry or felt it in. Also you might want to use some bracing until you have the roof framed up and the plywood on.

Why not build the return/ aka dutchman or queen anne while the gable is on the ground or bench build it? All you really need is the pitch of roof and length of overhang, cut a 12 side of that pitch from nothing to howevr long the line runs along that board. .Make two matching pieces and a 9" lon end block and nail it home. For a queen anne ,two times the length of the overhang ,and set your freeze rack in 4 1/4 if its to be bricked .Pole barn spike it into the wall/ gable face and tadah!!!
Good explanation and filming. It could be worthwhile to comment on the importance of carrying the building wrap up to the top plate as you have done. Thanks
You can birds mouth the 2 x 10 rafters so they sit on the wall heads that way they can't side away. Much stronger job. 2 x 6 wouldn't work because the timber would be too weak with the notch.
If you knew what you were talking about mrs. A 1”- 1/4" stainless Steel nail isn't going to go through A board that's a 1"-1/2" Right now he was framing not siding I could blow those nails in, in like 2 or 3 swings. And just to inform you he is using a 16d nail which is 3" - 1/2"
My dumbass contractor told me they dont frame fascia returns anymore, so now my soffit is supported by a flimsy one by nothing strap, how is this going to last longer than five years? Must be this new advanced framing crap, how the hell am I going to fix his mistake?
Yes and there is no price limit for safe working...... balancing off a ladder is in no way safe...you wing it if you want to matey and we'll see you when you hit the deck....jus sayin
Keith McKendrick Don't know where you live but scaffolding would cost more than the job itself. It would be cheaper to pay someone to do it. When I was growing up no one wore a cycle helmet. We built ramps and did crazy stuff. My kids don't wear helmets and I still don't either. It must be expensive being you, enjoy snowflake.
Both of these are rookie comnents. Scaffolds only take 5 minutes to set up but not needed. Ladders are safer than scafolds of set up right. Ive seen people fall of of both. We use siding, framing and trim guns ourselves. Personally i feel using vinyl is not real construction thst falls under the line of building a plastic toy car. I build houses n yet to truly fing a real fascia, sofit, Cornice video with someone with real experience
Yeah, just in case the siders don't show up in a week or two 🙄. Nobody wants to be reading Tyvek upside down. In his defense, it was right side up to him when they were framing the gable on the deck before standing it! This isn't a balloon framed, truss job. Looks like a New England home. I like it!

I like to use a framing square personally to get that soffit backing mark and it is 2018 we do have nail guns

Hey man how do i do this if my wall bows real bad? Its not level. I live in the house that Jack built,,,
Does it bow and not level?
Where is the gun nailer?
I try to make my videos as if the person is a novice or beginner and not likely to have a nailer.
Im building a 12 X 16...So far Ive only done the framing & it feels wobbly..Is that normal??
No it shouldn't be wobbly. Have you got any plywood on the sides or bracing if you don't?

Do NOT be afraid of using wood screws instead of nails!
Especially those of us who do this by themselves
Great video-- can u do a follow up video to show how to apply the wrap over it thx

Why's the flashing installed before the facia?
What flashing?
@@doityourselfdenniscom the eave starter flashing and gable flashing. Both are overlapping the framing, no facia trim?
I am just showing how to build the return, the trim coil comes after.
mark kouba Are you asking about the roof drip edge? The fascia and gable trim will slide in behind the drip edge when it is applied.
Thank you
You are welcome!
What are you swinging a 6 ounce hammer
No leverage when your arm is extended out and trying to swing. Fuck hammers. Get an impact and some torque screws
DO YOU KNOW ABOUT NAIL GUN ? YOUNG CARPENTERS LOVE ❤️ THAT
I try to make my videos for the average home owner. A lot of them won't have a nail gun.
Thanks
are those roof rafters 6"? There supposed to be 10"
No they aren't. Size of rafters is determined by the length. For the length of these rafters, 2 x6 are plenty.

A roof made out out of 5 1/2" timber could sag especially with lots of snow. What's the length of the roof anyway?
Wrong, apparently you don't know what you are talking about.
I don't get much snow here.
Old school !
Whatever!
That’s how I build mine.!
Great!
Good!
3:54 "AHHH...."
Don’t look right , is the end piece upside down. The 90 is wrong side. Flip it
Which end piece? What are you talking about?
Get a decent framing hammer and cut down on the amount of swings /mishits
framing hammer?on soffit and fascia?omg the nails are stainless and an inch and a quarter long watch out for elephant tracks lmao

I am not nailing the soffit and fascia, I am nailing the 2x4 to the side of the building.
Fuck hammers. I use a drill and torque screws. Way better, way stronger.
It's so flat I think I would forget about installing the slice of pizza board and just put the F channel around the corner.
Using a nail for the tape end to grab is NOT cheating... What a strange conceprt..
Well,, let me explain the intricacies of a keyboard... Really???
We're going to Chaka Khan?
Your paper wrap is upside down lol
That's okay.
My dumbass contractor told me they dont frame fascia returns anymore, so now my soffit is supported by a flimsy one by nothing strap, how is this going to last longer than five years?
Must be this new advanced framing crap, how the hell am I going to fix his mistake?
It probably won't. You should probably find a new contractor.
Erm...you guys ever heard of scaffold?
Keith McKendrick Ever heard about budget and cost?
Yes and there is no price limit for safe working...... balancing off a ladder is in no way safe...you wing it if you want to matey and we'll see you when you hit the deck....jus sayin

It doesn't matter.
Its called a birdbox.
Safety glasses please

don't nail into knots
Why would the drip edge and roofing be BEFORE the facia?!
Buddy, you do soffits and facia BEFORE you deck the roof.
Not if you are wrapping the fascia with metal. I always do my roofing first if I am going to wrap the fascia.
Check Woodprix mates. I love it to my wooden projects.
Why we ever adopted this ugly detail I'll never know
