  • Time to kick back and watch another 90s talk show gem that features alternative fashion. Today we have a fine assortment of goths, with the bonus feature of an older woman in the tattoo scene and a man with a 9 inch mohawk. The Ricki Lake show was popular in certain areas but for the most part wasn't as big as say, a Phil Donahue which would have come from the same area of daytime TV. These outfits are super iconic and VERY reminiscent of the 1996 industrial goth scene.
Hi! I'm The Stitchess! I'm an interdisciplinary artist and seamstress. I started sewing when I was 8 and loved it so much I made it the focus of my study in college. After a lifetime of battling severe mental health issues - I found healing in the radical softness and Japanese kawaii communities. As much as I love fashion and clothing, I also think it's important to consider how and where clothing is made. I went fast fashion free at the start of 2019 to voice my concerns over the rapid consumerism gripping the garment industry. By no means am I perfect, but I think it's important to show that change is a process. I believe it is always important to strive to be better, even if perfection is unattainable. Thank you so much for letting me share my art and process with you. I hope we can all grow together.

Critisizing adults for dying their hair unnatural colors is stupid because most kids aren't allowed to do it, so they can only do it in adulthood.

Plus, what about the double standard, the adults with brown hair dye theirs blond, that's not their natural color, they are not trying to cover gray hairs, they want a different look, but when it's blond it's okay, when it's green it's not

I shaved my hair during the Skrillex fad and the worst thing that happened was my mom being a bitch about me being a human being capable of making decisions. Kids should have more freedom in terms of their appearance so they learn to take care of themselves.

When I was still in school I told my mom I wanted to color my hair bright red with some temporary dye. She didn't just love the idea, she helped me do it! Lol. It actually ended up looking pretty cool! Temporary dyes like Manic Panic usually only last a couple weeks, so it's not hard to go back to "normal" if you know when you need to look that way!

She was like "who is he to say u can't get one." Then yrs later he was like you know what get one. Then my mom was dissappointed that i would tattoo my body. My mother also let my older sister dye her hair a lot cause it was brown but because i had gorgeous bright blonde hair and that "people pay hundreds of dollars to get hair like mine" i wasn't allowed to dye my hair. Did it anyways but like damn haha. But i love dying my hair. And i love my tattoos and plan on more. And my husband is happy with how I look. My mom also used to say that dying my hair would give people the wrong impression. That I'm a wild child who parties and drinks and does drugs and is irresponsible. To be fair, for the time she would have been considered heavily tattooed, even if she was a man. It's wasn't like now, where you see sleeves on a pastor. ;) Women were still only getting small or medium sized pieces until around the mid 90's, because you were considered loose , trashy or wild. These kids were the front runners for the loosening of the social norms and the freedom to be able to have peacock colours in our hair and not have it held against you at your job.

I believe parents do know their kids are people, except I do see (I think just 1 ) parent is getting a wake up call. Tho, parents won’t change their “ impulsive” reactions, mbe out of habit, ya know? (I like to believe parents can’t believe the freedom their kids have in society, while the parents growing up was restricted)
We gotta understand that some parents could care less about “ individuality,” as well. Parents,(I mean the show) understandably have a warped reaction on what’s right, so they negatively strain their kids as the result. They believe only in control.(I dunno if I said this right lol, use your own opinion on what you think)

So the dude thats grades are down, he doesn’t need to change his appearance, he needs help in school. Maybe he needs some homework help from his dad. Or an after school tutor. He doesn’t need to be berated on television and told that the reason he’s doing bad is that he’s dressing a certain way. Because if he did change to dressing “normal” he would still be having trouble in school. I hate that whenever a kid is having trouble in school they blame trivial things instead of trying to get their kids actual help. It hurts every time I see parents doing that.

    •  4 года назад +119

It's like when I was told in school that I had to cut my hair and have a "normal haircut", my hair was just shorter on the right side than the left side, that was it, and I was a straight A student, it's as if, and bear with me, your look does not affect your learning curve

    • @sixrabbits3972
      @sixrabbits3972 4 года назад +99

Exactly! A student getting consistent Ds and Fs in all subjects means that he needs support, not ridicule. He likely felt unmotivated in school, especially if he was being bullied, and struggled to put in the effort to excel.
Learning disorders also tend to go undiagnosed and written off as laziness or bad behavior; I was written off as lazy until a teacher suggested I might be dyslexic, then suddenly everything made sense! I had a student similarly written off as just not trying, until I happened to notice he couldn't match up the colors from an example with the correct crayon- he was actually a very bright student but he was just struggling because he was colorblind!

@@jodiesmith1991 the practice of passing on names has been done for centuries. It's why surnames like Jameson, Jackson, Samson etc exist. They literally mean Son of James etc.
In earlier times it was an easy way to follow family lineage.
Moving forward to the 1900's common names were handed down through family lines to keep the name a tradition in the family. Names like Mary, Margaret, David etc were often switched between middle and first names for alternate generations.
And then you have the most degrading, manipulative and downright self obsessed naming convention that is for some reason quite predominant in America; Senior and Junior.

This woman? Has something for herself. She is expressing herself and keeping a sense of identity. As long as she is doing right by her kids, she is just fine and shouldn't be shamed for not cramming herself into a "Good Mommy" mold.

She even took them all and hid them at my aunt's house in a laundry basket.
Truth was, she was a narcissist, a child abuser, and wanted nothing to do with me. I never got help with homework when I asked. And most of the time I couldn't even count on food being in the house.
And no one ever asked me why I dressed goth. One sentence: "It helped me feel powerful in a life I had no power in."

Granted she did take care of me but that came hand-in-hand with the beatings and control when I was younger because when she had a bad day; I had a bad day. I stood up to her at 23. I went out one time when I was 16 with a friend and she screamed at me for 2 hours. When my grandma asked her why she was so angry, she said “she thinks she’s going to grow wings, I’ll cut them.” Today she waits till family parties to belittle me. All of my family members had a hand in my abuse. I was the little pig that everyone in the family loved kicking to the ground including their friends. Fun! I have always had body image issues and my tattoo and piercings make me feel so much better about my body and appearance, others can only see the piercings and the tattoo but only the person who has them knows the true meaning and how happy it makes them.

If you want some deeper cultural context for her saying she “has to rebel” being from a conservative state watch the movie SLC Punk. Salt Lake City in the 80s and 90s was a stifling place to live for those who didn’t fit into it and it was excruciating to live here. Alternative people faced real dangers like domestic violence and harassment for wearing what they liked. Furthermore Utah culture is not kind to those who are not or decide to leave the dominant religion of LDS, and it was even worse back then. Alternative culture was heavily stigmatized (like seriously we got the shit kicked out of us like real beatings, violence and hate crimes) until this past decade.

Hello, old person here. My cousin dressed alternatively back in the 90's (we are 11 years apart), and her mother pulled out her piercings in her sleep. This was the attitude at the time, goth/punk/grunge kids were layabouts who didn't have a future, but my cousin (the goth one) now works in insurance and supports herself fully, without a degree, she has a nice house, and a nice car. She is FINE. I dressed emo in the 00s, still a lot of the same attitude, blend in, behave etc. It is just the last 10 years or so that I've seen it become accepted that colored hair is mostly normal, so are face piercings and tattoos. Growing up I was told those people are "bad". It was dumb, i'm glad it's a thing of the past.
