Great comparison - I bought both, used at reduced prices, but in great shape. I like the fantastic portability of the Air for everyday use. The Pro is set up as a desktop workstation, usually attached to a 27" 4k monitor that the wife more for her hobby and crafting work. Both are great machines.
You can buy just a separate larger monitor with an HDMI cable and basically have the two screens. I’m looking into doing that myself actually. I need a new computer for video editing. I have an old MacBook with Final Cut Pro but it’s giving me a difficult time with rendering times. I also have an older HP desktop with Adobe Premiere on it but I don’t know how to use that editing software nearly as well as Final Cut.
Just want to share.. Just got my Macbook Pro m1 8gb 512ssd yesterday.. I have no regrets! It’s super comfy with Software Engineering stuff! Also if you’re just browsing, youtube, other social media and with some office work, It’s super smooth! ❤️❤️❤️
This is a great video! For my first Mac I bought the Mac Book Pro it’s overkill for what I use it for but if I’m going to spend $1000+ might as well get what I want.
Main reason i'm not getting the Pro is because the Air is lighter, has a wedge keyboard, and actual function keys. There's literally almost no difference in performance and the only real difference is that the pro doesn't power down after overheating but overheating is so rare it barely matters
Dang I really need a new MacBook, my MacBook early 2015 is so slow and it heats up so much despite it doing minimum work. Like damn why you got an attitude when there’s only two tabs open.
Yeah, I got the same machine, plus the battery needs service. Might upgrade cause, in addition, with the new MacOS coming out, early 2015 is the oldest you can go on the pro, so this might be the last year of updates for it
if it makes you feel better, my 2017 does the same thing lol. I think my MacBook has asthma because I swear I open three tabs on safari and it taps out lol. Fan's way too loud and it gets HOT.
I was using my 2013 pro until beginning of this year when I got the 2020 air. I realized I really needed to upgrade when I couldn’t have a Zoom virtual background and my airpods wouldn’t sync to it

Sounds like it's more efficient to get the Mac Air with the 16 RAM. It seems like Apple may have made a consumer error by making these two systems too similar to each other, while not giving them enough unique features.
its pretty much the same anyway... only better clock speed. I prefer Intel Macs' where there WAS a buying decision to make.. Now, its impossible to choose.
@@timeyinsholaye9169 Apple ALWAYS plays the long term game. 2020 was a transition year, so it made sense for them to put the same chip in both the Air and the Pro. Again, this year was just about making a statement. It was just about getting the M1 chip out there. As the transition to Apple Silicon continues, there will be a much clearer distinction between the Air and the Pro
Well i personally think, looking for an ios developement task where I have to deal with xCode, i think paying a bit more but getting an effeceint results is what any programmer would look for.
Apples to Apples def got me, not just the joke but the pause lol.... The pro speakers do sound better but they would be great. Thumbs up here and you kept me engaged the entire video.
First time MacBook user. I did originally look at the Air because I knew for what I was using it for, the Air would be fine, and it was cheaper. As it turns out, I ended up getting a refurbished Pro 512gb for cheaper and I love it. The Touch Bar comes in handy once in a while but I don't rely on it much, like I knew I wouldn't which is why I originally was going for the Air. I don't know if the two hour battery difference between the two would have been that noticeable though
I love my MacBook Pro M1! I don't regret upgrading to it from my 2015 MacBook Pro. I used it for interior design, and my real state sale business. The colors are incredible! My clients love my presentations! The battery is ridiculous! I needed this upgrade so much!
I got the pro because: * Australia is hot as hell * I use it for high demand apps * Don't want to deal with throttling Both the Air and the Pro can run the same high demand apps, but only one of them maintains performance under load after 5 mins 😉
I bought the MBA and absolutely love it. I went with the 8 core GPU and the 1TB SSD and it's handled everything I could throw at it. Sure it cost more than the base model, but I would have upgraded the MBPro similarly, so still saved money. No regrets at all.
I wanted the pro, but its so hard to justify the price difference happily loving the new m1 MacBook Air. I just wonder if the base version will hold the wire for years to come.
I took a mbp with 16gigs of ram and 512gb of storage. I’m 95% a photographer user and the reason why i chose the mbp with extra ram it is .only because i’m not a kind of person that run to buy always the latest newest product on the market.. 16gig of ram and i’m good to go for at least 3 to 4 years with this machine. Cheers from Roma, Italy
The exact review comparison I needed. As a video editor and designer I was convinced that I needed the pro. Now I ready to purchase, and with this review the differences I wanted to know of are quite negligible. The wrist comfort is important to me and although I am in a tropical 🏝 climate, AC will help. Now I can get the Air in Rose Gold to coincide with my company colours. You have a like and a new subscriber 😉

I’m looking to buy my first MacBook ever and I’m not going to use it ALL the time. The thing I’m worried about most is the fan. Is the MacBook Air in the long term going to fall short? Because I’m gonna keep the MacBook for A LOT of years
I hear where the Air folks are coming from, but if you’re doing a ton of tasks at once (especially gaming, too), the Pro is still a much better option. This is mainly due to the heat/throttling factor after a while. Heat will destroy electronics. Also, if you do a lot of work outside, the Pro’s display is a lot brighter. Which is a significant thing for me, because it’s hard to see. And the speakers are much better on the Pro (for music lovers). So while I understand the Air is just fine for a ton of folks, these are significant things to a lot of people like me.
@@destinationbushcraft1833 It’s not even so much the benchmarks but the heat factor. After a while, both machines heat up a lot. One can efficiently and quickly cool it down, the other cannot. Benchmarks go down quite a lot on the Air, and there’s a very noticeable difference once the machines get hot. Heat also wears electronic components out very quickly. A lot of these Air machines are gonna have a lot of problems after a few years because they can’t efficiently cool down.
i just went for the basic Air for my daughter who is an incoming freshman, design major. Your video was helpful and justified my decision to go for the Air.
I bought the pro because I’m a programmer and I need performance over a big period of time. Also the Touch Bar makes it more user friendly and I need that. I would have loved to be able to connect two monitors and be a 14”... but at least it’s easy to carry.
Thank you for confirming I made the right decision to buy the larger SSD Macbook Air. I dont need the fan, or the touch bar, of edit video. Yes I edit photos, and I have the 8 core GPU, as per the larger SSD Air. So its closer to the pro. I love it, and it will do me for the next five to six years - provided the SSD lasts that long.
Hey, I noticed you do photo editing as well. So, does the macbook air do well with photoshop and lightroom? These are the only two things I need it to work well with for me to be able to make a decision.
@@johanduvernay4533 I use Luminar, and GIMP without issues on my M1 MacBook Air without it even slowing down. The reason I dont use Lightroom, or Photoshop is owing to the subscription model - I dropped out of using Lightroom when my Mac updated and obsoleted it. However I use a Nikon Df and Leica X typ 113 (both 16MP files), Which do not produce big files for digital camera's - so they may not be an issue with my MacBook Air. If you use camera's that produce large files, perhaps just buy the model with the memory upgraded to 16GB - one of my Leica Q2, (47MP files) owning friends did this, and use the Adobe set up - he reports no issues and produces some fine images. I hope this helps, and I am happy to answer other M1 related questions - I love mine, wouldnt be without it - performs well, battery life is stunning, and does what I need without difficulty.
I still have a MBP 2010 and today when I needed it to touch up some images, it started acting up and then it froze. So I’m watching this video at the right time. 🙏🏻
Got a good deal for Pro from Costco. $150 off for the 8gb 512gb which brought it down to just $100 more than the same config as the Air. So I went with the Pro for better charger.. better battery.. better screen brightness
I don’t really comment on RUclips videos I watch but this time, I feel the need to. This video is very informative and it helped me firm my decision to go for air. Much thanks and keep up the great work! =)
Since I can never find this info in reviews, here it is based off my experience: Editing 4K CLog III H.265 120/fps on MBA M2 8GB RAM 512 GB hard drive, no other upgrades. Ran a 5 clip video in FC running off an HDD for a 15 second baby shower video. Clips imported in seconds with zero delay. Playback was ultra smooth with zero dropped frames. Color correcting and basic effects ran with absolutely zero lag or dropped frames. Haven’t pushed the machine further yet with more complex edits, but so far it has completely annihilated my 2019 MBP with high-end specs. It also exported the video in about 5 seconds. Bonus round: from 100% battery life, I surfed the web for half an hour, spent about half an hour throwing the video together and exported after that. Final battery life before going to sleep: 92% Summary: It’s a monster. It doesn’t complain about H.265, which for anyone that knows… is a big deal. You can scrub h.265 from the finder, which is totally badass and makes quick searches for clips a breeze. It doesn’t get hot and it’s so damn light I can edit holding it in one hand. Granted I haven’t put it through serious paces yet, but I am confident with what I’ve seen, as it already completely blows my MBP out of the water, as well as my tower Mac. Editing is fun, again… What a nice feeling that is.
The gold was the selling point for me when buying my Air. Mostly because I wanted it to match my 12 Pro Max. Unfortunately its more of a "rose gold"/"copper" like tone but im not that mad bc it still looks super good
Very slight noticeable difference in microphone output/feedback. The MacBook Air had a slight distant-like feedback where as the MacBook Pro was slightly more clear & present. I currently own an older MacBook Pro model and will be in the market for my next laptop investment. Thank you for your time and sharing valuable information for the traditional consumer.
Only substantial difference that I noticed when I was trying to decide which one to buy, before I eventually decided on getting the MacBook Pro, is that the Air has inferior options for hardware upgrades - and for me, that matters.
@@Bambotb Not in the sense that you can upgrade it after purchasing it, but you do have several options for upgrades over the base model when you decide what to buy.
Got the air, with 16 gigs and 8 x8 cores. Haven’t thermal throttled once doing 4k video in final cut, or anything else. When the next series of chips come, that might change ...but this is perfect for now.

I just got the air and listening to this I feel I made the right choice. Only thing I do notice is the speakers do not get that loud. I would need to use ear buds . It’s very different than my HP laptop, the screen is much smaller, but I’m liking it so far
Literally JUST bought the M1 Pro. As much as I liked the Air, something told me that a fanless laptop is just asking for trouble. 🤔 So I went with the Pro. Now, I'm just waiting for it to update. 😁
I went for the MacBook Air M1 512GB with the full fat 8 core gpu. This is the same quality silicon that the MacBook Pro gets. So it will use less voltage and run cooler being a better bin. People have actually demonstrated a 20+% performance advantage over the 7 core model, just from the 8 core not throttling as hard. The machine runs excellent, I haven't even noticed it getting warm yet. I love the MacBook Air. Plus $1,149 for the 8 core gpu 512GB M1 model was a steal!
you must be stupid. Apple removed the fan knowing it would be sustainable. It isn't necessary for the air. The Air is not meant for heavy load work, so why would a fan be needed? The air is aimed toward average consumers. People have been using the fanless with no "trouble"...
Great information, thank you. I have been torn between the 2. Going with air, I don't edit anything and just use google chrome and outlook for work. One of the best video comparisons I have seen so far.
I chose pro because it has a fan for no throttling in intensive tasks, bigger battery, 8 core gpu, Touch Bar, and bigger trackpad. The air is still a beast, and I’d still be happy with it too. But pro is my choice.
For me the MBA is the much better laptop! No fan, no TouchBar, smaller and lighter! The MBP looks only better because it is silver! Space Grey is already wear out! I ordered the MBA M1 with 16GB and 1TB. Very nice video and many thanks for helping me!
It was a very tough decision for me to make due to those similarities. It came down to pretty much looks and which one I found more appealing. The prices are pretty good on Amazon right now and especially the Pro price has gone down way more than that of the Air. That means that the difference between them was a mere €200 on average with the Pro being 19% off its original price. I ended up getting the Pro for its Touch Bar because I really love that feature. Other than that I would've probably gotten the Air for its wedge shape and gold color option (yes, I'm a fan of this more rose gold like finish). Okay, maybe the slightly bigger track pad and twice as powerful charging brick convinced me of the Pro, too. Also they say the speakers are supposedly a little better on the Pro which I don't know as I didn't have the chance to compare. I'm happy with my decision even though I don't think I would have regretted getting the Air, either.

11:14 Pro sounds deeper and better I honestly love the touchbar mainly because of the adaptive shortcuts, and hence it is one of the reasons I chose Pro
I use my M1 Macbook Air outside fairly often, and I live in Florida. The Pro has a fan, the pro is 100 nits brighter, the pro has a wider trackpad, a better microphone, and I believe theres one additional core unlocked on the m1 usable by the Pro. I don't buy the Pro, and sometimes I wish I had, because when it's hot and bright outside and I'm using my laptop, the brightness and fan become very, very desirable. I know that doesn't apply to everyone, especially if you're bringing your own tech to work, to use in a cubical or something, or you're a student in a classroom setting. But the fact the AIR and PRO both exist DOES feel like Apple was simply giving us more options. The fact we have that choice is kinda' nice. Although, let's face it, if they simply made an "AIR PRO" with a fan and you had the small form factor with the fan and the additional 'pro' amenities, they could have made more computers for cheaper on the same assembly line, and found an in-between for the price difference, I suppose. Either way, I'm happy with the AIR.
I'm absolutely loving my Air (it's also my first Macbook, for context) but Lightroom really does kill the battery quicker than I'd like it to (but still I wouldn't swap it for the pro......)

Great comparison - I bought both, used at reduced prices, but in great shape. I like the fantastic portability of the Air for everyday use. The Pro is set up as a desktop workstation, usually attached to a 27" 4k monitor that the wife more for her hobby and crafting work. Both are great machines.
I just want them to come out with a 15 or 16” MacBook Air!!! I need the bigger screen but don’t need the pro specs
I was planning to get the pro~ Well God sent me this video
So glad it was helpful. Thanks for being part of the channel Isabel!
Haha same!
Honestly i bought the pro only for the extra battery life. I use it to code and im unplugged most of the time.
@Anthony Essaye What did you get 8gb or 16gb of ram?
Just want to share.. Just got my Macbook Pro m1 8gb 512ssd yesterday.. I have no regrets! It’s super comfy with Software Engineering stuff! Also if you’re just browsing, youtube, other social media and with some office work, It’s super smooth! ❤️❤️❤️
This is a great video! For my first Mac I bought the Mac Book Pro it’s overkill for what I use it for but if I’m going to spend $1000+ might as well get what I want.
I went for the pro. Better cooling, longer battery life, Touch Bar is a nice touch and I grabbed it on sale for almost the same price as the air.
in the same situation rn trying to get a macbook for college, how’s the pro holding up?
Yeah I have the pro to!
Finally, an honest tech reviewer, everyone just tries to downplay the results of the MacBook Pro. This guy, however, had the best conclusion.
Glad this video was helpful. Thank you for being part of the channel!
Main reason i'm not getting the Pro is because the Air is lighter, has a wedge keyboard, and actual function keys. There's literally almost no difference in performance and the only real difference is that the pro doesn't power down after overheating but overheating is so rare it barely matters
That’s well thought out. Appreciate you sharing this with the community.
Dang I really need a new MacBook, my MacBook early 2015 is so slow and it heats up so much despite it doing minimum work. Like damn why you got an attitude when there’s only two tabs open.
I feel you. Mine is from 2013 🥺
Yeah, I got the same machine, plus the battery needs service. Might upgrade cause, in addition, with the new MacOS coming out, early 2015 is the oldest you can go on the pro, so this might be the last year of updates for it
2011 😢
if it makes you feel better, my 2017 does the same thing lol. I think my MacBook has asthma because I swear I open three tabs on safari and it taps out lol. Fan's way too loud and it gets HOT.
I was using my 2013 pro until beginning of this year when I got the 2020 air. I realized I really needed to upgrade when I couldn’t have a Zoom virtual background and my airpods wouldn’t sync to it
When I was planning to buy a Samsung Tab before, I used to be here in your channel. You helped me decide to get the Tab S8. And now, I am planning to get a MacBook, I am here again. I just love the idea of you being part of my journey, I work online so having these gadgets are helpful.

True
Everytime I come to these review videos I look for someone test Sims on it lol. One day.

So glad it was helpful. Thank you for being part of the channel!
I got the Pro because when i wanna get the air they had only gold left.
Loving the Pro so far. Especially the touchbar.
CONGRATS!! It’s an excellent device. Thank you for being part of the channel!
I got the Air just because it was Gold...LOL
This wasn't a mistake by Apple. They knew exactly what they were doing. It was about making a statement telling people how obsolete intel is
it is, why buy a pro?

I got the macbook air, what a fantastic machine.
16 gb of ram and i have not got close to utilizing it all
It's a beast right! Thanks for being part of the channel!
I love my MacBook Pro M1! I don't regret upgrading to it from my 2015 MacBook Pro. I used it for interior design, and my real state sale business. The colors are incredible! My clients love my presentations! The battery is ridiculous! I needed this upgrade so much!
I got the pro because:
* Australia is hot as hell
* I use it for high demand apps
* Don't want to deal with throttling
Both the Air and the Pro can run the same high demand apps, but only one of them maintains performance under load after 5 mins 😉
Sounds like a very informed purchase. CONGRATS!!
and battery life
Did you upgrade the ram or ssd ?
@@ellyshaker Yep, 16GB RAM 1TB SSD
I bought the MBA and absolutely love it. I went with the 8 core GPU and the 1TB SSD and it's handled everything I could throw at it. Sure it cost more than the base model, but I would have upgraded the MBPro similarly, so still saved money. No regrets at all.
The "non upgradable" always lives on as a factor.
Living in a tropical country, I think that the fan is definetely something to take into consideration.
So do you think having one with a fan is better If you live in a tropical climate?
I’m not sure, but I guess it’d be. It gets pretty warm here, so I got the pro model
I wanted the pro, but its so hard to justify the price difference happily loving the new m1 MacBook Air. I just wonder if the base version will hold the wire for years to come.
I got the air. As I always do when buying, I decide based on what I use it for 90% of the time.... Easy decision I ever made :)
Hi! I'm a video editor and designer too. Did you buy the Air? Please let me know how it's going so far. I need to change my macbook soon
Great video. Would be great to see the M1 16gb variation against 8gb.
I have the Air (Not the M1 the 2019) and i just upgraded last weekend and bought the MacBook Pro M1 512 GB and i love it. Here you can see really a lot of differents. Also the battery life is amazing!
Agreed. CONGRATS!!!
What else do you enjoy about the MacBook Pro? Just picked one up with 16gb of ram and 1 tb of storage. Would love a update on your end!
@@luismichaels7880 I love the performance and the amazing battery life. Also the touch bar. Till now I am very happy with my purchase and I can highly recommend it.
Great video, I just bought the MacBook Pro but I think I’m returning it for the MacBook Air. Only software I really use is final cut in
Excellent presentation. I'd go for the Air but the brighter display on the Pro is the deal breaker for me.
You make great content. Keep it up! Also, I really like the wallpapers on you laptops. Is there some place where you can download them and/or other wallpapers like them? Thanks!
I already got the pro but i love your reviews, so calm and straight to the point!
I’m looking to buy my first MacBook ever and I’m not going to use it ALL the time. The thing I’m worried about most is the fan. Is the MacBook Air in the long term going to fall short? Because I’m gonna keep the MacBook for A LOT of years
Just get the pro it’s 250 more
I hear where the Air folks are coming from, but if you’re doing a ton of tasks at once (especially gaming, too), the Pro is still a much better option.
Benchmark test show a 1% - 10% performance increase between air and pro... not worth paying more for the pro.
@@truthteller4442 Honestly, I got Pro for the fan. Longevity (I hope)!

My Lenovo laptop is on its way out and I’m looking at getting a Mac, thanks for the video! Had definitely helped clear some points up
Glad I could help!Appreciate you being part of the channel!
I bought the pro because I’m a programmer and I need performance over a big period of time. Also the Touch Bar makes it more user friendly and I need that. I would have loved to be able to connect two monitors and be a 14”... but at least it’s easy to carry.
you are the new JimsReviewRoom. you are the best really.
Oh wow, thanks so much 🙏 - appreciate you!

After buying an M1 MacBook Pro two years ago I went and bought a basic M1 MacBook Air. I prefer the air. Great video! Thank you. 💌💌💌
Let’s hope my MacBook Pro 2020 will still be with me in 2030 :)
Fantastic comparison! I've been a MB Pro user for over 15 years and now I'm edging toward the Air. Thanks so much!
So glad it was helpful Tracey. Thank you for being part of the channel!
Most people who have purchased the Air won't admit they main decision was to SAVE 300.00, The Pro is better in most everyway.
@@pcmactek could you explain further? im on the fence about it, i do wanna save 300 bucks but im getting a student discount anyway, thanks
There were few reasons I bought the M Macbook Pro over the Air was the Touchbar. I love the Touchbar. It's way better than just normal keys.
I can definitely hear a difference in the sound, but it's not enough (for me) to justify a higher price tag.
Yes agreed the Pro's mic did sound better.
Since I can never find this info in reviews, here it is based off my experience:
Editing 4K CLog III H.265 120/fps on MBA M2 8GB RAM 512 GB hard drive, no other upgrades.
Final battery life before going to sleep: 92%
Summary:
It’s a monster.
Mostly because I wanted it to
match my 12 Pro Max. Unfortunately its more of a "rose gold"/"copper" like tone but im not that mad bc it still looks super good
Apple says ''rose gold'. . I say 'gold'
You can't upgrade anything on macbook
@@Bambotb Not in the sense that you can upgrade it after purchasing it, but you do have several options for upgrades over the base model when you decide what to buy.
I suggest for the air to get a cooler pad . Yes there are no holes but it will keep it somewhat cool
The pro speakers have a bit more full sound with a more apparent bass presence. But still not extremely significant

So I went with the Pro.

I got the Air with 16gb and 1TB... But was really torn between the 2. Thanks for the clarity!
I bought the MacBook Pro and honestly no regrets it feels so nice especially the keyboard.

I might go with the pro because of the fan.. I want him to last 7 - 8 years at least. I should upgrade the ram or the memory? 16GB ram and 256 ? or 8GB ram and 512 ? I'm a student so I'll use zoom, teams, chrome, office
Both would work and I normally like 512. But you can use an ssd if needed - and if you want more ram there is nothing you can do. So 16/256

but sir which macbook air year would u prefer cuz I sticked with Macbook Air 2020 M1
Thank you. You're thorough and nice to listen to.
